THE ABUSING PRIEST – FR MC CAFFERTY – THE BISHOP AND THE JUDGE.

FROM PADDY’S FACEBOOK

“In 2006, the diocese of Down and Connor made a very supportive statement in favour of Donaghy when the Public Prosecution Service of Northern Ireland decided not to prosecute him about James’ allegations.

“Fr John McManus, a spokesman for the Down and Connor Diocese, said Fr Donaghy had been through a very difficult time.

FROM LEFT – PADDY MC CAFFERTY. WALSH, DONAGHY, AND KOUGHRAN

Fr Donaghy has been through a very difficult two years, years of emotional and spiritual upset,” he said.

“They have indeed been trying years for him. A heavy burden has been lifted off his shoulders.

“This has been a very difficult and demanding time for his family, his friends, his parishioners and his fellow priests. They will be more than relieved to know that no prosecution will take place.”

This must have broke James’ heart because it certainly broke mine. It would work out though because, eventually, Donaghy would be convicted of his crimes against me, James and Victim B.

I always wondered, after this very caring statement about Donaghy by Walsh through his stooge, Fr John McManus, why Donaghy wasn’t immediately reinstated as PP of Bangor.

WALSH

Despite Walsh, Donaghy and their hangers on being “more than relieved to know that no prosecution will take place”, he was kept out of ministry.

I found out a few days ago that, also in 2006, the diocese received a complaint that Donaghy had repeatedly sexually abused a seven year old boy.

Read all about that here:
https://www.irishnews.com/news/2013/07/03/news/priest-preyed-on-victim-7-during-practice-confessions-63970/

This would seem to explain Walsh not returning him to public ministry, despite his desperate attempts to keep him in his positions in 2003 and 2004.

Walsh had complaints against Fr Filth since the late 90s and yet, when I complained I was told in 2003 that it “is your word against Fr Donaghy’s word”.

In 2006, Walsh was made aware of a seven year old boy’s abuse by his friend Donaghy. In 2011, when I and Victim B came before the courts seeking justice, Walsh’s big pal, Gemma Loughran, was the sitting judge.

LOUGHRAN

She failed to declare her friend Walsh as a conflict of interest. She severed our cases against police and PPS advice and gave no explanation. She imposed a blackout on the media reporting.

Loughran was rumbled by the Chief Prosecutor and forced to step aside from Donaghy’s trial when he discovered her close ties with Walsh. This was a wilful attempt, by Loughran, to pervert the course of justice.

There needs to be a public inquiry into Loughran. What she attempted was an act of pure evil. Walsh also needs to be scrutinised. He knew about Donaghy since the late 90s and did nothing.

All of this is a monstrous outrage, a mockery of justice and of the Catholic Faith. Loughran is a reader and Eucharistic minister in a well known Belfast church. She shouldn’t be.

I have written to both Loughran and Walsh, in recent months, facing them with their malfeasance. Their response? No solicitor has contacted me warning me to “shut up or else”.

Their response? Not so much as a peep out of them. Total silence. Their refusal to respond speaks volumes. “The wicked are caught up in the snares they laid for innocent” (Psalm 10:2)”

PAT SAYS

Paddy McCafferty’s abuse by Donaghy has taken a huge toll on Paddy’s life and health.

The attempted cover up by Walsh. Mc Manus and Loughran was horrific and took a further toll on Paddy’s and the other victims.

I was drawn into the whole saga w en VICTIM B’s family approached me.

The family and the police had their first meeting at The Oratory.

It took us 10 years to get action.

But we got there in the end.

Another horrific example of what the RCC can do to victims, families, and even its own priests.

Pat, it is indisputable that Paddy McCafferty has suffered greatly and has had his youth marred by perverts. I do wonder however about his repeated posting of photos on facebook of his younger self, and speaking about that self in the third person. Surely this will be reopening of the wounds over and over again.
Like Paddy I too was abused by a priest, a trusted friend of our family, a member of a religious community. It messed up my whole childhood and my school years up beyond belief. I went into tailspin from which I though I would never recover. It caused behavioral issues, bunking off school, feeling dirty 24/7 etc Thank the good Lord I did recover, and like Paddy I too carry some issues from that awful period. I went from being a good student to a struggling one and an under achiever. I can empathise with Paddy and I see the pain in his face to this day. I visited the Provincial of that order to which my abuser belonged after 27 years of my priesthood, I found a kind receptive man who listened well and believed my sorry tale, he unreservedly apologized for the harm I had been subjected to. He also offered payment for any therapy or counselling I had undertaken, which I declined. My abuser is now deceased and I have long since forgiven him for the pain and trauma I suffered, I offer Mass for him from time to time.
I was the innocent party – I did nothing wrong – I was a 11/12 year old boy who was violated. I hope God has forgiven him.
These awful things happen in life – they shouldn’t, and I believe they couldn’t happen in the present climate. Being sneaked into the priory while the others were at dinner and taken to his tiny room for a body wash and masturbation, it was all so sick and sordid. ‘Our little secret’; but for a lonely little boy it made him feel so special.
The bliss of teen orgasms soon yielded to feeling of filth and shame and distorted my emerging sexuality. It was a heinous crime.

Like

Why did you experience feelings of filth and shame? You didn’t initially. Was it the moral teaching of the Catholic Church that instilled in you these feelings? Where did they come from? And why?

Like

@9.05, you ask very relevant questions. There are other societies which regard sexual practices devoid of Catholicism’s moralistic overtones. They have developed recognised requirements and practices, but without all the guilt ridden moralistic associations now so deeply ingrained into Catholicism. The weird notion of priestly celibacy seems to have induced a warped understanding of sexuality and the consequent moral morass.

It is actually very powerful and an effective therapeutic exercise to go back and speak to one’s younger self, especially in the case of an abused child and young person. This is what Fr Paddy is doing. It is beautiful and is helping many. It’s a sign of healing.

It’s all about power and money, money and power in no particular order. Judge Loughran the church reader fits the well used mould of what the Roman Catholic mafioso get up to aiding and abetting and perverting the course of justice. Evil abusive cover up merchants.

There is a very interesting connection to the case of convicted priest, Terence Rafferty who received a community service order for sexually abusing a minor in 2013. Many were disgusted at the sentence handed down to this vile individual.

4.51. I was abused when I was 13 until I was 17/18 – it took a long time for me to realise that it had been abuse, and even longer to realise that I wasn’t to blame. I’m in my late 40s now but there are times when I feel like a victim (rather than the survivor that I know I am).
It isn’t a simple “I’m over it”. Things can bring up feelings that I’d thought had all been laid to rest. So we can’t say how someone should act, we might have similar experiences, but we all react differently.

The greatest disproof of God’s existence (or, at the very least, of his love, particularly his love of justice) is the presence of Catholic priests, especially bishops.

Who could honestly look, in the round, at these men and then declare that God lives, and that he lives for love?

@8:40: You pose a question I’ve asked previously on this blog: with never any sensible response from followers of religion, and the RCC especially.
It is my belief that many RC clerics, possibly the majority, come to realise that their priesthood and religion is a massive confidence trick, that they are in fact living a lie, and the God they profess simply does NOT exist.
For most, this realisation creeps up slowly. It is resolutely resisted: to accept it, and particularly to state it publicly has major implications. It would threaten their whole livelihood with all its privileges.
Against this background, as is now evident thanks to +Pat’s blog, the sublimated sexual drive of the RC clergy has become twisted furtive continuing chapters of abuse of all expressions.
I find no other way to explain the high level of abuse over many years by many RC clerics.
Take, for example, Finnegan at St Colmans Newry. His abuse of boarding pupils and others in the community, was over many years. Is it reasonable to think he believed in God and the tenets of Catholicism, yet continued the abuse over many years?
And I do not think he was just ONE bad apple of an exceptional nature.
I fully accept that there ARE some good priests who truly believe and live honourable lives accordingly. And I also think there are many priests who acknowledge internally the sham of their religion yet continue to minister with propriety from an imbued pastoral concern.
Yes @ 8:40, your comment raises many issues. Thank you.

MMM, I’d go further. I don’t think the majority of the people in the pew really believe their religion either: they may give it lip service or half believe it.
The other reasons people go to church – custom, community, habit – are more likely the reason people go.
This explains the precipitous drop in attendance after covid. The Sunday Assembly in the UK offers a secular alternative to church which is very popular because people want other things than the religious bit.
The whole thing is a bit of a sham.

‘Fear’. You omitted this word from your reasons for church attendance.

Christians are taught, from a highly impressionable age, that the alternative to belief in God is eternal punishment. Not much of a coin toss, is it? Which would you choose at five years of age?

Free will? Aye, right.

Like

12:14 I actually put fear among the list and removed it, thinking it obviously wasn’t making many people go to church nowadays! In fact the commenter here who regularly tells people they’ll go to hell just strikes me as the perfect illustration of how horrific the whole thing was.
Actually, when I was a child my mother used to sing Moody and Sankey hymns around the house. On one occasion when I was about five she made me laugh by singing ‘Sweeping through the gates of the new Jerusalem, washed in the blood of the lamb ‘ while I was in the bath.
She was another one with no sense of occasion.

I acknowledge why, but Fr McCafferty sounds not just bitter and angry, but also full of hatred.

We, most of the time quite glibly, speak of forgiving one another. We even do so in the Our Father. But is it all pointless? Is it truly possible to go beyond speaking of and about forgiveness, and actually, truly, forgive another, especially of very serious moral and/or criminal offences?

Some people would say ‘yes’ without the slightest hesitation, even if a perpetrator not only does not ask to be forgiven, but doesn’t care about the other party. Frankly, I think this is nonsense: what unlocks our capacity to forgive our tresspassers is their genuine contrition and REQUEST for forgiveness. Isn’t this the unspoken, but implied part of the Our Father? ‘Forgive us our tresspasses as we forgive those who tresspass against us (and who have asked for our forgiveness as we ask for yours).

I wonder whether Bishop Walsh and Gemma Loughran asked Fr McCafferty for forgiveness. James Donaghy, too. I doubt it.

Another litany of filthy and corrupt attitudes and practices right up the food chain of society and church, involving clergy, bishops, judges, and probably a whole range of other people who are in the business of keeping quiet, keeping secrets, frustrating the truth, frustrating justice, and generally covering up all they can in order to……..not let the truth out and protect their and the church’s reputation. It’s a narrative that we see day in and day out. Part of the issue yesterday about Byrne and H&N will be about Byrne’s managerial and oversight behaviour in dealing with matters (sex party in the cathedral’s clergy quarters), partly out of incompetence and partly out of a knee jerk clerical / episcopal reaction to frustrate truth and justice, in addition to aspects that involve his own allegedly personal inappropriate and possibly criminal behaviour. I can guarantee you that the wider issues and the more personal issues I’ve mentioned will be alive and kicking in so many dioceses and parishes. Think Egan / JPL / Portsmouth. Think so many of the Scottish dioceses which figure so often on this blog. Think why Francis is so unwilling to return to his native Argentina when he seems to be willing to go everywhere else in the world. What is truly happening there and what is there to come out about his time in Argentina before moving to Rome ? the only small consolation I can find at the moment in this depressing picture is that fact that these attitudes and behaviours are also active in society in general – look what is happening in the UK with dodgy Zahawi and his taxes (who, by the way, is the son of an Iraqi kleptocrat who fell out with Saddam and fled to UK with a chunk of his country’s money where he was able to educate privately his young son, hence the posh accent !), and the grimy business of the clown Johnson securing £800,000 loan, no doubt at very preferential mates’ rates. It’s a pretty depressing picture all round, but I would have expected far better of the church. Not to be, however….

Hey, as if we didn’t already know: https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2023/01/23/gay-clubs-run-seminaries-says-pope-benedict-posthumous-attack/ You only have to go to Gaycott (Oscott) or Alice Hall (Allen Hall) and you can smell it in the air. It has been like that for decades, usually faintly covered up by a faux traditionalism and conservatism as transference. Oh, and a rigidity when dealing with other people, just to flex your orthodox muscles if there was any doubt ! Now, I actually couldn’t care if our priests are screaming Marys camping around the place, even poking and poppering each other. I just want them be honest about it. That probably means in the present circumstances that they couldn’t remain in the seminary, but at least that would be honest and transparent. Living a life of Dorothy, especially when sexually active, is dishonest if you are also promising celibacy, and that is more damaging to everybody than any gay lifestyle or behaviour. If the Church wants to have these characters as priests, then it has to change it requirements for candidates and for priests. That would be an honest change reflecting the reality. As an afterthought, I have no doubt that Benedict himself was of gay orientation, and sublimated it throughout his life, based on the moral / theological stand of the Church that homosexuality is ‘intrinsically disordered’. One does wonder how happy and settled a life he must have had denying such an integral part of himself ? I guess he went as far as he could in recognising it and his needs, with his private household and domestic partner, Georg. Sad really, that they both had to sublimate such a significant aspect of themselves. All in the name of long discredited understanding of sexuality and human relationships.

I think the idea of celibacy would have attracted people who didn’t necessarily have the desire or will to get married, or feel able to maintain a sexual relationship, as an alternative. They wouldn’t necessarily have considered themselves homosexual in orientation because ideas of sexuality would have been different in the times of many of those you list. In modern terms they may well have fitted in in the LGBTQ+ spectrum somewhere but wouldn’t have had the language to phrase it.
Asexuality is another one – some people just aren’t interested. Yet do they have a religious vocation? Not necessarily!

How can a man who insisted on being referred to by his full ecclesiastical titles and who was known to thousands of students as being a sadistic Cleric, full of entitlement, be a shepherd of the Nazarene. Paddy Walsh wasn’t the only cover up merchant in relation to the sadistic Donaghy. Sadly nothing has changed. The most recent bishop of D&C, bishop airmiles bling, was another great cover up merchant. A diocesan lunch was prepared and served in the old seminary wing of St Malachys college. Walsh tried to slip away but was accosted by Paddy McCafferty outside where he told him what he thought of him. Walsh hurriedly left in his car for his residence in the leafy belfast castle area. Bling, I am told was less than impressed when Walsh complained to him. As for McManus, he is a very strange one. Whilst I am aware that there was some scandal regarding him, he has remained loyal to the fold and holds that bastard Walsh in great esteem as someone who has given faithful service to the institution that is the RCC. Mind you I fail to see that he has given great service to Christ. Walsh is very unwell at the minute. Yet he is still full of his own importance and has made several trips to the crypt at St Peter’s to see where he will be buried.
