Spiritans told abuse survivor (74) they would deny everything and ‘get him’ for costs

https://www.irishtimes.com/ireland/social-affairs/2023/01/24/spiritans-told-abuse-survivor-74-they-would-deny-everything-and-get-him-for-costs/

A survivor of abuse at a school run by the Spiritan congregation in south Dublin was told they would deny all allegations against them, force the case to a higher court and “get him” for costs.

Dr John Connolly (74) says he went to the Spiritan congregation in recent years with allegations of his abuse as a child in 1958 by the late principal Fr Robert Stanley (“Stanno”) at their Willow Park school in Blackrock.

STANLEY

However, Dr Connolly ended up in the Round Hall of the Four Courts in Dublin where he was told “they would not only deny everything but force it to a higher court and get me for costs [range €40,000-€80,000].”

SPIRITANS PUT ON SHOW

PAT SAYS

The RCC and its dioceses and religious are great at PR and pay expensive PR companies large sums of money to make them look good.

You can see this contrast today in how DR JOHN CONNOLLY was treated and the great SPIN in the video of the Irish Spiritan leader, Kelly.

When they get victims on their own, they threaten and bully them.

But when the TV cameras are rolling, they come across as sweet as grandma’s apple pie.

These people speak with forked tongue – and we know where the forked tongue originates.

Bishops and religious superiors re-abuse victims by their cover-up and by their bullying and threatening.

If they were men of God, they would reach for their prayer book and Bible when faced with suffering victims.

Instead, they google the most expensive lawyers to protect the millions in their coffers.

Does Jesus not say to them what he once said to Peter? “Get behind me Satan”.

I wonder how many little boys and girls the Spiritans and other Irish missionaries have raped and ravaged in Africa, Asia, and South America?

That Irish Missionary Paedophile Legacy is coming down the track!

Wonder why the notoriously anti-Catholic IT keeps on bringing up these ancient stories about Blackrock?

In that context, it was most disappointing to read Salvador Ryan’s article today in that awful paper, in which he lays into fellow Catholics.

Why blame the messenger? Did bad stuff really happen at Blackrock? If so, then the church needs to face up to and deal with it. You give the impression that you would be happier if it was covered up and not reported.

I have to disagree with you. I think Professor Ryan’s interpretation of Catholics and Christians is spot on, their Christian beliefs are often left behind as they leave their Church, until the following Sunday, never to be allowed out or, practiced outside.
The same can be said for some Roman Catholic priests and pastors, who should be leading the rest of us by their example.
It is not unusual for Roman Catholics and other Christians to cherry pick from their religious tenets, (on contraception, sex outside marriage, divorce, etc. nothing new there)
Ryan is absolutely right Christianity has a variegated movement, that I see as positive.
Sadly, it very often is those with the most faith who have the quietist voice. I have to agree with him, many Roman Catholic are neither admirable or lovable.
Where I disagree with Ryan is, none of this is a new phenomenon, only new to him, if he is lucky enough to live long enough, he will observe the same scenario played out in some form over and, over and, over again throughout his life.
One has to wonder what insight and, observations he has seen from that institution he mentions where he teaches theology.

It’s not ancient history. Dr Connolly came forward in very recent years and this is how he was treated. Salvador Ryan’s article was an excellent one, as one would expect in such a top quality newspaper, very fairly written.

I read the article yesterday. It is a horrendous abuse account, one of hundreds. When I was about 9/10 the older “men” in their 20’s picked on me and sexually abused my by messing around. At 13-15 yrs of age an older man from a neighbouring village abused me. I felt utterly useless as the experience was a “secret” and it was ours alone. He gave me a sense of being special (grooming…now I know). One day I thought this is morally sinful and I need to stop. How I found the strength to break free from him I’ll never know. Think it was the Catholic teachings I heard about sins against God and that subconsciously told me “this is wrong”. I kept telling myself, I won’t be loved by God because of what was happening but that “ingrained belief” of some kind prompted me to say NO and smack the face off him one day. But the after effects of “I’m dirty” continued for many years until one day I went to a Dominican priest and explained what had happened. He saved me from a life of deep shame and guilt. He was so kind and understanding. That was in the 60′. To be abused in any way at any time sexually or otherwise is an egregious crime to endure. Abuse can halt your life emotionally and spiritually. To this day, after almost 5 decades, the visual memory returns too often. The Spiritan Fathers need to urgently establish a TRUTH Forum for all survivors. They need to rearrange their ownership/trusteeship of all their schools, though all are now run by lay principals and by a trust established by them. There are too many men suffering today because of their time as boarders in religious run schools. I spent 3 years in boarding school and was never ever abused in any way nor did I hear of such, though some brothers and lay staff were very strict and exacted discipline. But, my memories are happy ones and my boarding days came almost immediately when I stood up to my local abuser. I hope and pray that all survivors can find sufficient healing and peace to get through their days. It disturbs me that all too often the Church and religious orders have to be dragged to tell the truth and to accept and own their responsibilities and that they use all legal advice to unnecessarily deepen the pain of survivors. Their adversarial approach is utterly reprehensible.

The Irish Government allows the RCC to run riot financially. Charitable status and all the grants they receive should be withheld at least until church has satisfactorily met their redress obligations. Many victims have already died awaiting redress. This is totally unacceptable.

Conflicts of interest all over the place. Most Clerics come from families with strong political affiliations and the obligatory “back scratching” continues to this day. Disgraceful that the ultra wealthy Roman Catholic Church is claiming building renovation and energy grants allegedly created to help people on low incomes including pensioners and disabled etc. Some Bishops even has their priests apply for Covid payments when churches were closed due to Covid. This was reported in the Irish media and is publicly available information.

Stated that “the payment of JobKeeper moneys to the Roman Catholic Church and to priests is an example of hypocrisy by the Roman Catholic Church”.
The payments were disclosed when the ABC reported that the Diocese of Parramatta was asking priests to donate nearly half their payments back to the Church to improve its financial position.
In 2007 Cardinal Pell and the Archdiocese of Sydney successfully argued in the NSW Court of Appeal that they were not liable for the sexual abuse of a child by a priest because they did not employ the priest. They also successfully argued in the Eilis case that the Roman Catholic Church was not a legal entity capable of being sued.
The Bishop of Ballarat has pleaded he is not liable in more than 30 cases of child abuse by priests using the Eilis defence.
“By calling on the Australian government to amend the JobKeeper scheme to allow priests to receive this government support they are claiming a defacto employee relationship said Dr Morrison RFD SC.
“The JobKeeper scheme is designed to maintain the employee and employer relationship during the COVID 19 health crisis. It is completely hypocritical of the Church to claim JobKeeper payments for priests while, on the other hand, avoiding liability for serious and terrible crimes against children because priests are not technically employees”.
“It is improper and inappropriate for the Catholic Church to receive these payments from the Commonwealth”.

The Spirit and and Jesuits against whom many accusations are made about teaching clerics must now pay out all compensation as a principle of justice. The provincial teams in both Orders now must act with speed, justice, honesty and accountability towards victims/survivors. They need utimately to do this for survivors, then for the school in which many good priests and teachers served and they need to do it for all sufferers of any abuse. The Orders seem committed to doing that and I hope they will continue to do so. When at boarding school for four years, not one bit of this kind of behaviour was witnessed. I feel lucky but my heart is with the grown men who were horribly used, abused, hurt and shamed in emotional pain as chuldren and young people. I hope they can find the space to get through these days. The Spiritans must pay all compensation and more. Wait till the African flood gates open with their experience of ABUSE by these coordinating predators.

It’s all about the refusal of secular and religious clerics to take financial responsibility and pay compensation because of tge existential threat these pay out pose and they resist it tooth and nail.
Personally if I had anything to do with it I would ensure that every religious order who sexually abused and covered up would be bled dry with multi million pound and dollar compensation packages.
I mean what value on a child’s innocence and dignity?
Look out Birmingham after IICSA I’d say tge writing is on the wall and a tsunami of compensation claims are on their way.

Yes, it’s strange that most diocese and religious orders have only had to make minimal compensation. Maybe it has something to do with the law which makes it very difficult to claim compensation and very easy to avoid paying it ? Usually you hear that some sessions counselling have been offered, but very rarely sum large enough to make a bishop’s eyes water. Perhaps somebody needs to organise a massive group case with money and backers behind it to take them on, all the way to the Supreme Court if necessary ? The Church has not been humbled by the revelation and publicity of the abuse scandal. Maybe it is time to really hit them where it hurts, and that is in the pocket ?

Surrounded by ill at ease people all squirming in their seats. I note he limits himself to Spiritan schools, which begs the question about the many Spiritans who will have served on the missions and in parishes and other places over the decades. Is there another tranche of abuse allegations yet to come from those places? This statement and its presentation does not inspire confidence. Or trust.

No they don’t.
Sometimes religious orders used particular location as their place to put kiddy fiddlers, so it’s conceivable that the superior knows the Holy Ghost fathers used the schools like that, if they did. Many orders sent abusive priests to the US or missions, with the results we’ve seen.
If this seems a bizarre way of dealing with it, that’s because it is. And remember that the church’s current inadequate response is actually a very slight improvement on what they used to do to pander to father’s little ways

“Are we sufficiently caring for the life and dignity of every person here, recognising their needs, their rights and freedoms? Are we open to establishing the full truth of our past, so as to enable justice and true remorse, and in that way facilitate forgiveness and healing?”
(From Homily to celebrate World Day of Peace)
“Peace, reconciliation and forgiveness on this island can only be progressed if we bring to light the truths about our troubled past that remain hidden and festering”.
“It may seem ambitious but might we in the Churches offer to help develop an agreed truth recovery process to address the legacy of pain and mistrust that continues to hang over us,” he said.
“Looking to the future, he said that peace, reconciliation, and forgiveness across Ireland could only progress by shedding light on the truths of a troubled past that remain “hidden and festering”.
(suggestions during a service at St Anne’s Cathedral in Belfast 23/1/223)
So put the rhetoric into practice in the RCC in relation to dealing with abuse victims/survivors. After all Amy acknowledged there is a crying need for atonement, inner healing, and hope in the aftermath of the abuse scandals. The hierarchy stated a ‘reckoning’ has still to take place in the church on the still unresolved issue of clerical sex abuse – according to a statement following the winter meeting of the Irish bishops conference at Maynooth in early December 2022. Is Amy going to initiate this reckoning or process of atonement? Would turkeys vote for Christmas! I suspect the financial costs associated with reckonings atonement and inner healing are so great it will never happen because the hierarchy fear the institution will be financially fleeced due to numbers of abuse victims/survivors. So Amy will continue to waffle in the interests of diplomacy and public relations while appearing to be ever so concerned.

Maybe + Dick will give us one of his reassuring fireside chats ?! I must say, however, that the reporting of this particular case does indicate that it is at the lower end of the scale of offending – touching and massaging. Maybe the report isn’t telling all the gory detail. There isn’t any report of rape or intrusive sexual assault. Of course, before the baying wolves set off, let me say that this guy should not even be doing that. However, I do suspect that these days the prosecuting authorities prosecute stuff that would not have been even considered prosecutable a few years ago, but such is the mood these days that the slightest inappropriateness is seen as something that has to be pursued. I’ll be interested to see how this case turns out, and whether what this guy has done is so terrible that he goes to prison. I suspect he will either get off or get some non-custodial sentence.

Poor Nursie ! He really does seem a bit clueless and simple, and too nice. But, I suspect beneath there is something a lot sterner and more focussed. He doesn’t like confrontation and leaves the dirty work to others, but he gives the direction of travel. I think he is at the stage of life where he would prefer a simple and quiet life, hence the domestic stability offered by Dominic and Sister Luke. You can’t blame him really. He’s got real problems in Brum, especially with clergy numbers, and with the number of clergy who historically and presently are in trouble, in prison, MIA, c/o or just simply disappeared. It is not sustainable. Something will have to give. In the meantime, he is able to top up the numbers with lots of South Asian imports, which kind of does the job, but isn’t a long term solution to the problems. He’s also got Oscott which has its own problems, but he does seem a bit blind to what is bleedingly obvious when you visit the place or see the characters who are there. All the gay antics and antiquarian styles aside, you do have to ask yourself if a seminary like that is best equipped to train men for a modern priesthood, rather than taking refuge in the certainties of the past like specialness, set apartness, ontological and sacramental change, clericalism etc ? It does not work by and large, and has a huge fall out rate, especially in the early years after ordination. Any company / business / institution would be asking serious questions as to whether it is fit for purpose. I suppose Longley is just hoping that he can get to retirement before having the place hit the buffers, and I guess by now he is hoping that he isn’t going to be moved on to anything bigger and more burdensome. By the way, what does he do in his spare time in order to relax ? I suspect very little.

Global Outcry over Volunteering at Orphanages organised by Clerics for their lay and ordained colleaguessays:

The Dutch parliament held a debate on the practice and its connection to human trafficking.
Author JK Rowling spoke at a conference for global leaders saying “despite the best of intentions, the sad truth is that visiting and volunteering in orphanages drives an industry that separates children from the opportunity for a family life and puts children at risk of neglect and abuse”.
Critics call it “orphanage tourism” arranged by church or other agency and where vacationers may just set aside time to visit an orphanage and play with the children.
The unregulated nature of orphanage tourism means there are no reliable numbers on how many volunteers participate each year and this practice is so widespread that the UK and Australia as well as the US have taken public stands.
These trips can bring in a lot of money to orphanages in the form of fees and onsite donations.
In addition visitors often convince family & friends back home to make significant donations as well.
OSSO – Orphanage Support Services Organisation, for example, has volunteer opportunities in Ecuador and Thailand with a $190 application fee, a requested $100 donation and a $695 fee for one week to cover living expenses, transportation to the orphanage and other expenses.
Critics have stated that all this money has led to unscrupulous institutions promising food, education or a better life to recruit children from poor local families into the orphanages.
The US Department of States 2018 Trafficking in Persons report states that
“Child finders” as its report calls recruiters capitalise on parental concerns about poverty, conflicts, natural disasters and lack of resources for a child with disabilities in order to convince parents to turn over their children who are then used to attract lucrative international donations and volunteers.
A Save the Children report published in 2009 estimated that globally at least 4 in 5 children in institutional care have at least one living parent.
The Trafficking in persons report says that some institutions force children to perform traditional dances or interact with visitors to encourage more donations.
In addition the Report notes they are sometimes malnourished or not given sufficient medical attention to garner more sympathy from visitors and donors. Critics are calling these practices modern slavery.
In 2018, Australia became the first country to criminalise recruiting children into orphanages as a form of slavery.
The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child declares that every child has the right to grow up in a family environment and it’s Guidelines for the Alternative Care of Children states that institutional care should be a temporary “last resort” for “the shortest possible duration”.

Yes he definitely doesn’t want to do any dirty work or confrontation and enjoys the frisson of others taking his bullets but he is responsible for letting the the gay culture drag on at Oscott .
But as a gay man himself now with his boyfriend Dominic it tow he’s even more compromised and ineffective.
They can’t sustain their ongoing losses year by year (£5 million and rising) and Birmingham is just one giant old boys nursing home.
Not sure how old he is and no way will be promoted further he’s a liability and damaged goods on the Sageguarding front. He must have known what went on. He must have been told about what went on. True justice would be where everyone in positions of power and who did not act should face the consequences.

3.21: An interesting comment. Same observation can and is now being made about the Spiritan’s Templeogue College under lay principalship but with Spiritan Patronage. ..Huge management, patronage, staff and gender issues have required mediation and other professional services. Once Catholic schools become staffed by more and more teachers of little faith or none and the more secular our society, the greater will be the many issues around Catholic Ethos, particularly under sexuality and relationships programmes. Being a principal in primary or secondary schools is very challenging..I’m so glad to be out of management and just act as chaplain.

The only thing left to make this complete is for him to have been abandoned on the steps of the college by his mother who was knocked up by a Holy Ghost father.

3:21 that’s why he’s the Principal, look closely at the connections of many teachers and principals and members of school management board, populated by generations of tried and trusted cover up merchants and character assassination specialists.

The principal of Blackrock College is a homophobe and a bully who has no place governing the lives of children. His name is Alan McGinty and he made my life hell as a child. He once humiliated me for ‘having a period’ in front of my entire year. He should be removed or resign.

Brum and 5 million losses a year, so no wonder he’s casting his gaze towards the Johnson Fund ! Bring back Wilcox to the defence ! Nursie wouldn’t be able to overcome him. Not sure who the trustees of the Johnson Fund are these days. But they need to stand firm, because their future retirement livelihood will be in jeopardy if Nursie gets his hands on it and uses it to fill the gaps and losses in leaky Birmingham. There’s definitely trouble ahead for him on safeguarding, clergy numbers, church attendance, general interest in religion, moving demographics of the diocese toward Birmingstan, increasing Muslim predominance in that area, as well as huge financial losses, not to mention the mission to the imprisoned and MIA clergy.

Benny, functionally, was not even a Christian, since Jesus wouldn’t have betrayed abused children (as Benny did).

6:27 Exactly. Funny how once again being Catholic coincides, for absolutely no reason at all, with promoting kiddy fiddlers. 🤔

I spent 31 years in the New York Police Dept. 26 of those years as a detective in various precincts. On my first few weeks as a detective I was mentored by an old streetwise cop (2nd generation irish).
His advice to me was “Always treat anything a priest tells you with suspicion’
His advice was very wise.

You keep repeating that like a bad pint of ale. If you had proof you would have cited it. How many bent and crocked cops have you come across.I suspect most cops like yourself and the MET here in London are totally untrustworthy. Never trust a cop

5:45, welcome to how the world sees you. 4:54’s point was echoed by the Boston Globe reporters who said that talking to bishops reminded them of nothing so much as talking to mafia bosses.
Thing is, when you promote crime, people see you as criminals.

Great advice – I’ve been involved with clergy and associate personnel for over 30 years in a professional capacity and would concur that anything a priest says treat with some suspicion as they lie and speak double talk and with a forked tongue.

Name and pic of the O’Toole young beau secretary, and I’ll apply my Gaydar. Actually, no need, because it’s going to be pretty obvious that he’ll be Friend of Dorothy, isn’t it ?! Anyhow, it will be interesting to know who it is and where he has come from. Oh, I do love a treasure hunt !

Conspiracy to pervert the course of justice is an extremely serious matter but the RC Mafia conveniently opt to overlook this fact much like they opt to overlook their heinous transference of abusive clergy from one parish to another.

Pope Benedict Issues Warning From The Grave
Benedict Penned 16 Essays To Be Released Only After His Death Warns Of Radical Manipulation, Gender Ideology, Sexual Perversion At Catholic Seminaries, Western Authoritarianism And Other Grave Concerns
January 24, 2023
from by Staff
“A book of essays penned by the Pope was published in the wake of his death but largely suppressed in the West, likely because it issues a grave warning regarding propaganda and woke ideology infiltrating the West. Benedict’s essays were written to warn people, and Catholics in particular, about a “radical manipulation of human beings” and “the distortion of the sexes by gender ideology.”

You would think there would be some urgency about releasing these warnings.
He may of course have held off because they would only prompt people to remind him that he was himself censured for modernism.
