Dear Bishop Deenihan,
I refer to my recent correspondence to Archbishop Rozanski posing this most reasonable and legitimate of questions: who has canonical responsibility for Fr. Hildebrand Houser, a monk of Silverstream Priory, which is located within the Diocese of Meath?
It is beyond comprehension that my legitimate query was not acknowledged and/or answered by any individual from the Archdiocese of St. Louis and/or the Diocese of Meath and/or Ms. Teresa Devlin, Chief Executive Officer, National Board for Safeguarding Children in the Catholic Church in Ireland. The inaction of Ms. Devlin is deeply egregious by virtue of her position.
The paucity of a response means it is legitimate to take the reasonable inference that safeguarding in the Archdiocese of St. Louis and the Diocese of Meath is tokenistic.
So, for the second time I pose a very simple question: who has responsibility for safeguarding when it comes to Fr. Hildebrand Houser? Is that the Archdiocese of St. Louis or the Diocese of Meath?
Do you Bishop Deenihan, as the Ordinary of the Diocese of Meath accept that Fr. Hildebrand Houser, OSB who was ordained as a priest of the Archdiocese of St. Louis is currently residing and functioning as a priest at Silverstream Priory?
Do you accept that Silverstream Priory was canonically erected by your predecessor Bishop Michael Smith that it is located in the Diocese of Meath and that you are the Ordinary for the priests of the Priory and the ultimate superior for the monks?
Do you further accept the legal reality that Silverstream Priory, Stamullen, Co. Meath, K32 T189 is owned by St. Finian’s Trust, which has as its “primary object is to act as permanent trustee for the property and investments of every kind, owned by, held in trust for, or used in connection with the Roman Catholic Church in the Diocese of Meath”?
If so, why is the aforementioned Trust and its trustees permitting, Fr. Houser to function as a cleric in a property without proper canonical oversight and accountability?
I appreciate that with your PhD from the University of Hull, that you are not canonically or legally qualified, however, I do know that you have access to expensive lawyers. And they can advise you the merits and demerits of vicarious liability that could arise from any tortious act(s) on property owned by the Diocese of Meath. Of course, you will accept I hope that good legal advice in Ireland is very expensive.
Bishop Deenihan, again I wish to be unequivocally clear that I am not accusing Fr. Houser of any misconduct whatsoever but, I am very keen to ascertain who is canonically responsible for this cleric and his priestly ministry within your canonical territory.
Moreover, as I have been able to evidence in the past boy scouts were present at Silverstream Priory, hence my on-going queries in this regard are legitimate, reasonable and timely.
On the homepage of Silverstream Priory, the “SAFEGUARDING” url links to the webpage: http://www.meathsafeguarding.ie, would you accept Bishop Deenihan that Silverstream sees the buck stopping with you?
For reasons that are self-evident, I would be grateful for an immediate acknowledgement of the present and clarification in which diocese is Fr. Houser incardinated as a cleric.

Given that it’s of diocesan right and the letter you previously quoted saying all the priests were incardinated into Meath, then obviously Meath is responsible for safeguarding.

Pat, what are YOUR REAL concerns re: CHILD SAFEGUARDING and GOVERNANCE in the monastery, apart from what we already know? Is not your real motivation simply an attempt to embarrass, mock, jeer at and get a dig at Bishop Deenihan, since you have created an animus between you and him. I’m serious when I ask these questions. Since you are an independent entity with no jurisdiction over any civil or canonical structures or responsibilities and since you do not belong to any church grouping or conference or to a civil adjudication board of any seriousness, your concerns are superfluous. Also, no school exists on the premises and only supervised outside groups, once younger people, must be supervised. I think you really just want Bishop Deenihan, PhD, with your cynical reference to him strewn to pieces. I was at the monastery recently and was impressed with their prayer discipline. Fr.Houser has become a great spiritual inspirer. I received blessings from him. I truly believe that if these men receive good guidance and support and are left alone by the nastier bitches on this blog, they could very well make a great community. I’ll be back for the holiness of the place and for prayer. God bless them. All new groups or communities struggle..Look at the early Christian communities. As “brave” as Pat like us to believe him to be, the Silverstream monks are far more commendable In their effort at m8nastic life. I hope to spend more time getting to know these monks.

There is no harm in poking (in a non sexual way !) Deenihan and others, keeping them on the back foot. + Pat, even if imperfectly, is about the only person who keeps bishops and clergy looking over their shoulders, which is no bad thing. For too long clergy have been able to do what they want without any repercussions, with the only people they are answerable to prepared to look the other way or to coverup. + Pat puts it out there, and they have now to take notice. Otherwise, + Pat will keep putting it out there. So, I for one think that + Pat does an invaluable service. I guarantee you that every bishop in Ireland or a delegated flunkey will check this blog every day to see what is being said, what has been uncovered, and what bishops and clergy are up to. That keeps their feet to the fire and makes sure that they think twice before getting up to the egregiously wicked and lying things that they have done in the past. So, keep it up, + Pat ! This is part of a wider problem. If a priest who is a consecrated religious is publicly administering the sacraments in a diocese, his canonical superior has to apply for faculties from the bishop. If the priest is a guest in an institution independent of his own, and the superior of that institution applies for faculties instead, the faculties are invalid and the chain of safeguarding is broken. Also, any marriages that the priest takes are invalid. Beware. This especially applies to Benedictines running parishes.

Canonically invalid. See canons 1108-1111. To be valid, an RC marriage must have the diocesan bishop or the parish priest physically present at the ceremony. This is part of the required form. The PP can delegate to another priest, as long as the latter has diocesan faculties. If a religious priest is appointed to a parish by someone who is not his canonical superior, then he has no faculties as a parish priest -even if the bishop is misled into thinking that he has granted them. I was directly involved in a case of this, when a couple got married in a Benedictine school chapel without the PP being involved. The latter demanded a repeat of the ceremony, after he had granted delegation to the priest who, fortunately, could prove that he had valid diocesan faculties. Very embarrassing, and the couple were not happy.

The HSE is more interested in facilitating cozy deal arrangements for their associates with public money than in treating patients in a competent and respectful manner. They keep hiring office Chiefs but not enough Indians on the ground to care for patients. Their draconian treatment of elderly patients and their relatives was self serving at a minimum and a breach of human rights at a maximum. What was it all for, months later, thousands of unvaccinated people arrived on our shores and literally no one wears masks anymore yet thousands of elderly people died alone and their families were denied the opportunity to be with them. It will be very interesting to hear what HSE whistleblowers have to say about what went on behind closed doors in the HSE.

I suspect lots of people know what went on behind closed doors in the HSE but are afraid to speak out. The death rate in Ireland as well as many other countries is going through the roof. Anyone that isn’t in denial can see for themselves and sadly many have experienced or know others that have experienced the discrimination and passive aggressive abuse meted out on a daily basis particularly toward children, women and vulnerable groups by the RC church. The only safeguarding that works is not to engage with them or allow them any access to child or family records as they are a criminal organisation with internationally recognised extremely concerning levels of human rights abuses and subsequent participation in aggressive cover up and censorship of complainants.

I would suggest that Meath and Silverstream have probably not even thought of the safeguarding lines of authority and accountability. At least until you, + Pat, asked the direct question. And now they will be running around like headless chickens trying to work it out. Because it’s not something they’ve thought about before. Which all points to the Mickey Mouse way in which Siverstream has been set and run from the beginning. Which would be laughable, except that we know there are real issues there in all sorts of areas, not least safeguarding and the predilections, past and present behaviour of some of the characters who are there. In any other walk of life, the place would have been shut down. But, it’s the Church, so what can we expect – only thinking of themselves as above the law, exceptional, special, untouchable, unaccountable etc. etc. And, we know where that leads, don’t we ?

The non compliance of these people confirms that they are all a very serious matter of public concern in light of ongoing endangerment and non resolution of outstanding issues including vulnerable persons and treatment of Dom Benedict Andersen. As more Irish schools are opting to move away from the once dominant Roman Catholic ethos, Irish church property trusts will be charging rent for use of their properties. Has any arrangements been made for this new income stream to be harnessed by the Irish government to fund a compensation and redress scheme for victims of church related abuse?

Financial Conflicts of interests motivated by church greed remain highly relevant whilst they are denied and unresolved by church who instigated these shocking levels of ongoing criminality against vulnerable groups.

The significance of that is it’s some instrument of a past piety that Kirby liked the look of and pinched from perpetual adoration nuns. Of course nowadays we would see it the way you do but it would have been used by the adoring nun and would have been inside the enclosure so wouldn’t have been seen.
A previous comment here indicated its full significance, something about being martyred.
Basically if you don’t look at that and think wtf you should be assumed to be a freak of some sort, and definitely either kinky or so sexually immature or in denial that you should be given a wide berth.
The other thing is that perpetual adoration was only ever done by nuns as far as I know. Have the trads been told these monks are gender bending?

The Romanists once widely practised this physically violent form of self-mortification, but, comically, it all stemed from nothing more sublime than a mistranslation of Scripture, from Greek to Latin, by someone Romanists even today honour: Jerome.

I think a lot of those things predate the sexual revolution and even Freud so people wouldn’t have been aware of sexual implications of them.
Another example would be a lot of the tools of bodily mortification used in the past: nowadays if you want a whip you find them in sex shops. A Passionist told me that in the past on a Friday they would turn off the lights in choir, all remove the habit to the waist and whip themselves.
The fact that you find these bizarre kinky devotions in ‘trad’ communities precisely because of their denial of modern insights into sex and psychology, does not remove the sexy overtones of them.
I suspect in the future the emerging scandal of these ‘trad’places will be more kinky whipping and whoopsie moments, because when you deny the existence of a sexual motivation, it spills out anyway.

However it isn’t really an answer to the letter, merely indicating that the church is reluctantly doing what states force it to so bishops don’t end up in prison, telling everyone else of their duty and ignoring the actual questions.
Pat, in Ireland is there a law which allows the public to force information out of organizations? In the UK it only applies to public bodies so the church wouldn’t count but the equivalent law is frequently used to great effect by journalists in the US. It also doesn’t mean breaking confidentiality – for example if the church is forced to reveal how many priests were suspended over safeguarding concerns in a certain timeframe, that isn’t confidential information.

Pat, as a Religious, the priest would not neccesarily be a priest of the diocese. A priest can be ordained by a bishop who is not his Ordinary (especially if his Ordinary is not a bishop, but a Religious Superior). I was ordained by a bishop from another diocese, but that didn’t mean I was incardinated into that diocese.

It’s an institution not of a pontifical right order or congregation (like Glenstal); it’s an institution erected by the diocese and entirely under the diocese. A diocesan institute cannot incardinate in and of itself, so the incardinations of Kirby, Houser, and Anderson must be in the diocese of Meath.

Where on earth is Dom Kirby? If he’s quietly saying his prayers, perhaps singing the Office as part of the common life in some other Benedictine house, that’s fine I suppose, but it would be nice if he doesn’t have access to vulnerable males. Shuffling around of dodgy priests and monks has resulted in many victims and compensation claims which saw monies and property donated by generations of Catholics go up in a puff of smoke. It’s a bit ‘where’s Waldo’ except far more serious. The incardination of the religious can be far from straightforward in a geographical sense. There’s nothing sinister, just how it is.

If the Church in Ireland is to even make a modest recovery in the next decade, safeguarding in every Diocese has to be beyond reproach. When will the Church learn to this lesson? It is quite shocking that a priest feels unable to call out his concerns in Meath. But Andersen is a case in point and it also shows why Deenihan cannot be trusted.

The church is really driven by money and power. The mere fact it doesn’t publish Vatican accounts says that – that’s if they can even begin to locate all the funds stashed away across Europe. It’s another body which could end world hunger tomorrow (for only the $6bn the UN told Elon Musk it would cost) but doesn’t.

The idea that world hunger would end by paying out €6bn is ludicrous. The UK alone pays £17bn a year in international aid, on top of massive payments by the US, Japan and other European countries, quite apart from the likes of Cafod and Christian Aid, and, of course, the world’s biggest charity – the Catholic Church. My late wife and I always seen clergy using a parish credit card to pay for group meals in various eating houses. How do I know that you ask? My wife was quite pushy and went up to see the card when it was presented for payment at the till. She then went outside to see the drunken clergy get in their cars and drive off whilst making a note of the car registrations.

I never seen a parish like Dungannon; it accommodates the come-back priests. There are more changes than the leadership of the DUP. Curates coming and going like it’s going out of fashion. But I think priest ought to be able to have a normal married life. It is shocking that Dungannon, the Deanery of Armagh has two priests and 4 churches.

Dublin Diocese still seems to be employing 19 lay Pastoral Workers, mainly in parishes/pastoral areas. There had been a plan to make them all redundant. They are hard-working, committed professionals, who take the burden off the PP and other clergy. They generally have to find their own accommodation and transport, commuting between churches and working evenings and weekends. I hope the new archbishop will keep them on and ensure their pay and conditions are adequate.

Fr Paul Murphy is indeed a chaplain to the forces. He is posted to the barracks that needs him. Such a chaplain is not always in a barracks within his diocese but is dependent on the authorisation to minister that is supplied by his home diocese. He is an honourable priest in public ministry.

Pat I think you have hit the nail on the head. There appears to be a thread of gay priests, mostly under 40, across Ireland using Grindr. Their bishops are aware and oftentimes deflect the responsibility.
In my diocese in Northern Ireland it is scandal after scandal to the point where it becomes laughable. The order of our young priests’ day is: 1. Christening at 10am, 2. Mass at 12noon, 3. Last Rites for the Sick, 4. Hit the bar after 8pm and get completely pissed, and round the priestly day off with a good old Grindr hookup.
Our Lord and Blessed Mother look on in pity.

Why on earth did Noel Treanor appoint three priests to Chapel Lane to assist Timothy Bartlett??? What is that all about?? Is Bartlett so lazy and/or useless that he needs three assistants to run a parish that consists of a few wee streets??? If, as someone suggested earlier, this could be a ploy to give Bartlett the semblance of having “worked in a parish” before he is “mitred”, then it is crass in the extreme! A man so desperate to be a bishop as Bartlett surely needs to be examined thoroughly as to his motives. That couldn’t be the sign of a normal and integrated man. What is Bartlett really all about? was in Maynooth the same time as Tim Bartlett. He was always ambitious. His room was like that of a lawyer, shelves, suitably appropriated tomes, clean as a whistle. The problem was students like him were conditioned to be ambitious. He ticked all the boxes for future ecclesiastical promotion. In his defence, however, he was a very polite and well behaved lad. Compared to the other slime balls and randy feckers I met there, he wasn’t the worst. At least he didn’t want to share a shower, a bed or a back door with you. Eugene O’Neill and his side kick, Conor Stainton- Polland, an Elvis impersonator who abandoned D&C for Liverpool Diocese were like two old women giggling and gossiping. Of those two though, Eugene was the better half. Conor S-P, I wouldn’t trust as far as I’d throw.

If I remember, Stainton Poland was the name of a seminarian who debated to a packed theatre in Maynooth, around 1994/1995 against the University’s setting up an LGBT society. At the time despite the efforts of some few staff members, and one or two deacons, Maynooth was finding itself unable to resist the setting up of the society. S.Poland’s side didn’t shine. There was a certain irony about the whole matter and the audience were overwhelming in favour of setting one up.

Based on my experiences,
Dangerous areas for kids that abuser or ‘a groomer’ would enter these areas where they have rights of access to:
1. Boarding schools.
2. Schools with swimming pools.
3. Boy scouts set up for one reason alone. My ex supervisor was a well known boy scout organiser. He joined cabra at the age of 19.
4. Access to the dorms.
5. Altar boys.
6. Access to day schools where any priests or monk or nun would have exclusive access to. Example of this is Renmore day school.
7. Inviting priests or religious people to their house is a big ‘no, no’. Example of this was Fr B Smyth and others that I don’t know.
8. Do not allow your child into a sacristy alone.
9. Be with your child at all times even in swimming pools (outside looking in), sacristy, ensure that your child is with someone else.

I wanted to warn any parents re their child or teenagers or a single mums with kids.
I have no travel plans for this year except for invited to southern France for 5 days next March. I booked the cheapest option which is obviously ‘Ryanair’.
For your information, it cost me €93 for return ticket including priority plus two bags (small bag or handbag for ladies plus under 10kg cabin bag).
My previous trips were
1.Denmark – Christmas 2022.
2. Thailand 2013
3. France and Portugal 2016.
Didnt travel from 2018-2022 due to covid pandemic situation.
Feel free to ask me re same as I will do my best to answer yours.

I know of a gentleman in his eighties who lives in Dublin who claims and I have no reason to doubt him as he is a gentleman of the highest integrity that he was propositioned whilst a student at Queens in the fifties by one Cahal Daly

I visited Armagh cathedral not long after Cardinal Tom Fee was buried. Saw a woman with her arms wrapped round a tree over the fat prelate’s grave.
Word had it that the Sky Fairy had worked a miracle over Fee’s grave on the day of his burial. It had been raining and raindrops were dripping off the leaves of a tree next to Fee’s grave. One mourner noticed this in particular, and made the glib remark: sure ,wouldnt you swear the tree was crying?
Of course, word of this got around, and the assumption was that the gluttonous cardinal had been a saint.😅

What’s with all these churchy crowd that have Brazilian cleaners & also motorhomes parked in church yards at odd times. Are they lending their motor homes to the priests? I’m beginning to think that although we know a lot, we still haven’t heard the half of it.

We have lovely Brazilian neighbours here in Gort, Co Galway, the lady of the house and her friends are cleaners and their men are absolutely marvellous at building stone walls. They all disappear like little bees every morning heading for the motorway. I don’t think they could afford a motorhome though. Nice people and they appear to be religious as they also go to mass. Bless them!

There are too many clergy who think of themselves as talented singers / actors / characters. I find The Priests vomit making with their camp, twee, saccharine act, all wrapped up in homely spirituality. At the same time, they are as conspicuous by their absence as by their presence, and I think other clergy get fed up having to backfill to enable them to flaunt themselves around the country and world. Idiots like SugarRay should just be told to zip it. The liturgical actors with their adopted idiosyncrasies are just sad – be they trendy ones who go off piste, or the lacy frilly traditionalists who prance around playing at living in the 19th century. Increasingly we see both types in our parishes. Odd antics from odd clergy. Spare us !

As I commented on the day of the now deleted blog. I slept with Martin McAlinden quite a few times and all unprotected, and I am HIV negative. This should be clarification for the rumour that Martin had HIV. Even if he did, there should be no shame attributed with the illness anyhow.

On Sunday 29th at 4pm there was evening Prayer in The Cathederal
of Christ the King Mullingar, to celebrate he feast of the presentation of the Lord . Many religious of the diocese processed up the Isle caring A lighted candle, .it was Presided By Bishop Tom Dennihan. The interesting thing was The monks of Silverstrean chanted A psalm from the sanctuary standing in A semi circle. Bishop Tom, Wecomed them and their “New Novices” . Did you know thet are still recruiting, BTW they are still younger than 35 years of age.
