More Restrictions Coming on the Old Mass
The Catholic internet is buzzing with rumors. Pope Francis is said to be unhappy with the less-than-strenuous implementation of his desired restrictions on the Traditional Latin Mass. And so he is rumored to be working on a new set that will prohibit Catholics from celebrating the Mass at any parish except those that belong to religious orders, such as the Society of St. Peter or the Institute of Christ the King, that are dedicated to its celebration. Further, it’s said that he intends to forbid all Catholics, including priests of those orders, from celebrating any of the sacraments in their traditional form.
Theologically, this is a bit of a mess. All bishops are successors to the apostles, and all of them have the competence and duty to provide for and regulate the liturgy in their diocese. They can be compelled to obey only by the pope tossing them on their ear and replacing them if he so chooses.
I suppose my fear is that such restrictions will be hard to undo precisely because of their brazenness. Imagine a more conservative successor to Pope Francis coming into the See of Peter years hence. He is tasked by the College of Cardinals with restoring the respect of the office and unity of the church. Such a pope would be tasked with restoring the church’s reputation for solidity and trustworthy authority — a church with few “surprises.” This desire for restored continuity cuts against the prospect of a third consecutive papal about-face on the Traditional Latin Mass.
PAT SAYS
I am inclined to agree with Pope Francis on this one.
The Latin Mass has been used by the RCC looney right to reject both Vatican II and the Papacy of Francis himself.
General councils have been regarded for 1700 years as having the most supreme authority in the Catholic Church.
If a group of Catholics reject a general council, they are, in fact, giving way to serious heresies.
Francis is left with no other option but to remove the thing they are all gathering around – the Latin Mass

It’s not the Latin Mass, it’s the Vetus Ordo, the Old Mass, the Tridentine or Extraordinary form, not the Latin Mass. The Novus Ordo in Latin or with the Latin ordinary Sung can be rather beautiful to even the normal catholic.

In the wake of it, Catholicism has basically vanished in Low Countries except among the very old and some hardy immigrants. It’s heading steadily that way in Ireland. The collapse in Europe since the New Mass & LOTH (as typically implemented) is frankly stunning. In many places most Massgoers remember the old Mass. Basically the New Pentecost is not even lasting a generation. The poorly implemented product of some deceased north European academics from countries where Catholicism is now stone dead is looking set to be dead itself within a few decade or two. Cutting up the ordinary, propers and the calendar, removing the imprecatory psalms, was a bad idea. Claims it thrives in Africa are dubious. George Neumayr RIP in Cote D’Ivoire toured about and found that Pentecostals and African Churches thrive, Moslems too, while Catholic Masses are ill attended. Even there it’s cultural.
The only place where young people or families are reading seen is at the Mass of Ages. The contrast with the New Mass, a product of childish late 60s optimism, is instructive. The brutal invasion of Ukraine is just one example of the sinfulness of man and that the numbers of the elect will likely be few indeed, as St Leonard of Port Maurice said.
Brazil is now majority Prot, tho in part that from most bishops there the lead of fascist turn communist Hélder Câmara who wickedly opposed the brave military government in handling communists. Instead of preaching the practical morality of family life, it was social justice and revolution. People took the Catholic bread, but took their spiritual and moral sustenance from this often US funded preachers.
Realistically whatever Pope Francis does or says won’t matter. His physical state means it won’t be long. Prayers for him. The measures born of a desperation among certain of his lewd advisors that the daemonic ‘spirit of v2’ is being exorcised from the Church. Francis even post TC has amiable relations with the SSPX dating from Argentina. His or his advisors dislike seems more about the Summorum Pontificum / Quattuor Abhinc Annos crowd as exemplified by Cardinal Burke, who is far harsher towards the SSPX than Francis. V2 as found in its documents, something the late, great Pope Benedict emphasised will live again.

I agree with you.
Of course the detractors will insultingly say, Oh! They don’t understand Latin, there was/is always the English translation in the Missal.
However the glorious music does not just rely on one sense, we know of the magnificent sense of sound, there is scientific research which also includes, taste, touch, sight, and of course emotion, with a dose of memories thrown in. Why begrudge us?
When someone says the like an opera aria, for instance sung in Italian, one does not have to speak Italian to thoroughly enjoy it, and want to hear it over and, over, again. No one says you can’t enjoy it, because you are not fluent in that language, it’s accepted, it is appreciated in other ways.
Some of the senses used for language, are also in operation seeing ecclesiastical clothing, some vestment are indeed extremely beautiful and, a sight for sore eyes, a joy to behold, which add beauty to the whole performance not forgetting each piece has a religious significance (apart for that ridiculously gross Cappa Magna)
Those who attend the Mass in the vernacular hear a gaggle of voices, the priest rushing through Mass, short sermons, those awful handshake (spreading disease throughout the parish, my Mother -in-law used to always say, How do you do? which brought many a smile) then having to receive the Host in those dirty hands and, put it into your mouth it’s tantamount to abuse.
Horror of horrors, those bloody strumming guitars, and the Banshees, the worst singers (not a choir) imaginable, it use to be a relief to get out, and away from it.
It should be each to their own and, don’t speak of obedience, if this blog is representative of Roman Catholic priests, obedience doesn’t come into their life, just like all Roman Catholic, they cherry pick, and, of course I mean, more than the fruit. Although on reflection, why does ripe for picking keep popping into my mind?

Theologically it isn’t a mess at all. And the fact that the so-called ‘trads’ have no idea of history is indicated by the way they forget the number of rites that were just banned by the universal church in favour of the 1570 Roman missal.
The local bishop hasn’t been in a position to decide the liturgy in his diocese for centuries, and if they were Catholic their aim would be to do what the church does rather than what they themselves want… like other Protestants.

Why should one (yes, just one) self-pampered parasite get to choose the liturgical form in his diocese? Oh, wait! I forgot. It’s HIS church, isn’t it?

Bad history. Trent permitted all Rites with 200 years of history, so everything from Sarum to Rouen, Braga and Ambrosian. Even then it was heeded only partly in France, where it took the French Revolution and the long 19th century to end most Gallican Uses. The Mass Trent codified was identical with the first printing of the Roman Missal in the late 15th century. Mostly what vanished were lengthy tracts composed by prominent bishops, often farced with local languages if recited before the sermon. The multiplicity of Uses of the Roman Rite only tailed off through a mixture of the Protestant Rebellion, French Revolution, Vatican I, the Franciscan adoption of the Roman Rite from the start, war and economics, made the universally circulated Roman Mass and Office more convenient.

Dear Bishop Buckley
This is probably one of the most stupid, cruel and ignorant – of many posts – that you have ever made, and which confirms your own seeming online view that the church should be in your image rather than Christ’s. You mention 1700 years – of what? You don’t know church history. A stupid off-the-cuff remark. Further, where are your stats proving that adherents of the traditional liturgy are giving way to heresy? You don’t know them. They’re mostly faithful Catholics expounding more than 1700 and more (!) years of God’s revelation and who don’t want to hear of smut, and the gossip of Irish and English clergy’s mortal sins which you allow in your comments without question. Or does revelation change according to your proclivities? Those faithful Catholics are likely to be the last catholics standing, the only group, although now small, which is growing at present – the only group growing in a church which is dying and will be soon dead if your supporters have and who want their way – and who adhere to God’s perennial teaching rather than the opportunism of the Zeitgeist. Apparently, so we’re told, Vatican II was a pastoral, not dogmatic, council, according to its fathers, so please be careful when numbering it in your figures. COVID’s recent decimation in practice, additionally, means there’ll be only a handful of faithful left in a few years, as Benedict XVI seemed to prophesy. Catholics can only preach the faith if they’re to bring new faithful in. Could you please explain the apparent growth of millions of numbers in the Buckley church who are going to save Christianity (and not only those nasty followers of yours, gossiping online who seem guilty of unkindness and worse – and remember that Religion is of God, promised and therefore true) who are evangelising us? Not merely in some Larne oratory or online gossip column. Your generation, who want your cake and to eat it, who take pictures of your Christmas lunch while allowing posts naming people who haven’t yet been judged and who haven’t yet had the right of proper judgment and recourse, those who on reading seem to be rejoicing in gossip, should either shut up or practise Christian charity

3.51am: This is a brilliantly thought out essay. You make serious points. You highlight the degenerate, a la carte Catholicism of the many infidels who now follow Larne’ s vision. Pat, while doing much good pastorally, has not ever presented a programme for the renewal he asks of Catholics, choosing instead to crucify targeted clerics, often for very selfish reasons. Criticisms of wrongdoing and of poor moral and spiritual leadership are imperative but is it necessary to continue months and years of nasty, harsh, personalised invective against so many, even in death? As for the form of mass we celebrate. I’m with Pope Francis but I’m not averse to those who desire TLM. These adherents may, in the end, be the remnant which Pope Benedict spoke of. I believe Pat could have brought fruitful and constructive renewal to the Church if he chose to do so. It’s regrettable that he feels the daily desire to crush all perceived opponents. I wish he would acknowledge the good pastoral initiatives being undertaken in parishes. And try too to m8derate his hostility to all things and personnel Catholic. Criticism- yes: deliberate mockery, ridicule and harsh judgments – no.

I with Frankie on this. Allowing the continuation of the Tridentine Rite is a festering sore and a rallying point for the disaffected. I’d even close off the options of the groups you mention such as the Society of St Peter or the Institute of Christ the King. If they are so interested in the liturgy, then let them put their energies in to celebrating Vatican II liturgical reforms with dignity. In particular, seminaries should be doing all they can to dissuade young seminarians from adopting a quaint interest in these traditional liturgical practices, and the wardrobe nonsense that accompanies such an interest, so that priests that are coming out of our seminaries are balanced, sane, sensible and mainstream. If it means ditching some religious societies, bishops, priests and seminarians, so be it. They will eventually wither on the vine if they are ignored. I never understood Benedict’s desire to reincorporate these people. They are simply a minority interest group with weird tendencies and should just be ignored. Go, Frankie…..!

A life founded on obedience…and there’s the rub. Obedience is fine, provided it’s obedience to Christ principally and fundamentally through personal conscience. But this isn’t how the Church works: it demands obedience to men.
Crikey! And look how that turned out.😕
LikeLiked by 1 person
Quite, and I’m sure you’ll agree that with its replacement of obedience to Christ with obedience to the church or ones superior it can’t be reformed.
However I was thinking that the trads don’t even do that obedience. Cf
‘Because of the holy service they have professed, or because of dread of hell and for the glory of everlasting life, 4 they carry out the superior’s order as promptly as if the command came from God himself. 5 The Lord says of men like this: No sooner did he hear than he obeyed me (Ps 17[18]:45); 6 again, he tells teachers: Whoever listens to you, listens to me (Luke 10:16).’ Rule of St Benedict chapter 5.
So even if you have deluded yourself that there is a crisis (there isn’t, it’s in their own heads) in Roman Catholicism the right thing to do is continue to obey, even if they’re wrong. This is found in other classics such as the Imitation.
In Alcuins case the Catholic and Benedictine thing to do was to bear patiently with the bishop’s decision. I’m sure he doesn’t allow the monks under him to disobey him on the grounds that there’s an alleged crisis going on.

Abolishing the English mass facing the people, and which some of the council proponents claimed to affirm, was apparently dishonest.
The worthwhile parts of “mass” are scripture readings, Nicene Creed and Our Father (and less often homily). The stagey camps of copycats with their mirror-image “scare” stories don’t value any of those anyway.
Pretend rival gangs of fake auditors putting each other on show trial by turns, parallel channels to the parallel channels, garden itineraries of deformation – don’t avail for the faith or morals of the public.
Where I do think new laws need bringing in, is to enforce “long vehicle” signage, flashing blue lights and a man (not woman) with a red flag, walking at 4 mph in front of any cappa magnas.

TLM attracts homosexuals like bees to honey – it’s not hard to figure out why – lace, gloves. dressing up, go figure.
Bobby Byrne loved it – repressed young twinks etc – so passé and blatant.
It’s also Retro and when life lacks meaning people hanker for nostalgia- it fills a hole (so to speak).
Problem is the next Conclave will be a war over this single issue – it’s a war between Queens and Mother Burke is its poster boy and a host of others.
Bored by its beautiful and mystical argument clearly a homosexual subterfuge and I guess Francis is trying to bust it up before he pops his clogs.
Glad it’s being outlawed but like a cockroach it wi will be hard to exterminate.

There might be some scope for argument if, those who now say the Novus Ordo Missae, were not also practicing homosexual too, what actually is you point?
“A homosexual subterfuge” for God’s sake! Cop yourself on, you are all in the same bubbling effluent, right up to your necks.

Same old, same old!
It’s at the point now where it’s hardly newsworthy: it’s what we expect.
Yet these clerical paragons of Christian virtues expect the ‘faithful ‘ to believe in the religion they preach ,……..and continue to pay for their privileged lifestyle.
Just stop contributing, encourage others likewise, and tell your priests the reasons.

SNAP REACTS TO REPORT PUBLISHED BY A PORTUGUESE PANEL FUNDED BY THE COUNTRY’S CATHOLIC BISHOPS
Lisbon(Portugal)
SNAP – Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests [Chicago IL]
February 13, 2023.
(For Immediate Release February 13, 2023)
“Yet another report has been released that shows yet another country saw thousands of their children harmed and abused by priests, nuns, and other Roman Catholic staffers. Our hearts break for the families and survivors devastated by this abuse and hope that this report leads to secular reform that will better protect children. According to a report published by a Portuguese panel funded by the country’s Catholic bishops, approximately 5000 children were abused by Catholic clergy. According to the report, many of the molestation cases involved boys, and some of the victims were as young as two years old. One victim claimed he had been living in a “black hole” throughout his testimony. Our hearts break for him and for all the children who have endured years of abuse at the hands of adults who are supposed to be God’s…”

Yes, I agree. I did not know as much about the illness and how people can live perfectly healthy lives until reading bishop Pat’s blog. It’s possible to access NHS services without even your GP being aware. If you live outside of a major city, it’s worth making the trip there. One of my friends has a partner who is undetectable, and he is allowed to continue working as a surgeon, which he could not do a few years ago.

I believe that Latin Mass should be allowed to continue beside the new mass. Thus giving the laity an option to attend.
But Latin Mass isn’t perfect as I’m cognizant of the fact that might attract nutters, crackpots, overzealous ones, dressing up and into laces et al. I agree it’s problematic.
However, it helped me to overcome the effects of new age therapies which consists of some demonic elements. Although I have to admit that I was quite naïve to the dangers of new age therapies as I have put up my hand re mistakes.
To me, it has a spiritual value and also oomph factor to speed it up when I was battling with the effects than Norvo ordo mass. But TLM isn’t everything, just a mass of the ages which many saints attended.

Is Pope Francis taking us back to the situation that existed when St John Paul II was Pope? Please correct me (in a kind way if possible) if I am wrong, but as far as I remember during the years from 1978 to 2005 there were strict restrictions on the Tridentine Mass.

The move may backfire. It will mean that, for TLM partisans, the line will be clearer between being a “normal” (Novus Ordo) Catholic and a traditionalist Catholic. It may well generate more vocations for the FSSP and the ICKSP (which are far from ideal).
Many problems would be prevented if it were easier to find a reverent “High” Novus Ordo with some parts (eg the Ordinary or sung parts) in Latin.

The rot set in over the Latin Mass because of the useless overweight peasant John. Why do they appoint peasants as popes? The new translation of the Mass by cockroche and other lefties is yet another step on the slippery slope.

It would be more the Pope’s line to root out abuse, for example the many abuser priests still working in parishes in Portugal. But then again, that isn’t a priority for a Pope who sheltered McCarrick, Daneels, Zanchetta, Barros, Inzoli and all the rest of them.

Not as odd a you might imagine.
I did state SOME of the senses used seeing the beauty of vestment, not the sense of smell.
Although, I am partial to the smell of wafting smoking burning incense and, the clatter of the Thurible against it’s chain, a beautiful sound, sight, and smell! Sadly its probably something many younger priest will never be able to take part in.

MORE THAN 100 PRIESTS SUSPECTED OF ABUSE REMAIN ACTIVE IN PORTUGAL’S CATHOLIC CHURCH
LISBON (PORTUGAL)
Reuters [London, England]
February 14, 2023
By Catarina Demony
“More than 100 priests suspected of child sexual abuse remain active in church roles in Portugal, according to the head of a commission investigating the issue. The commission, which started its work in January 2022, said in its final report published on Monday that at least 4,815 children were sexually abused by members of the Portuguese Catholic Church – mostly priests – over 70 years. It added that the findings were the “tip of the iceberg”, describing the 4,815 cases as the “absolute minimum” number of victims.“There is an approximate (number of accused priests) and it will clearly be more than 100,” child psychiatrist Pedro Strecht, who headed the commission, told SIC television. The commission said it was preparing a list of accused priests still working to send to the Church and to the public prosecutors’ office. Strecht said those on the list should be removed from their roles or at least should be banned from interacting with children and teenagers during the investigation. Jose Ornelas, head of the Bishops’ Conference, said the institution was yet to receive the list.” “What Pope (Francis) says (is)… abusers of minors cannot hold positions within the ministry as long as it is proven that the person is an abuser,” Ornelas said, adding the Church would not conduct a “witch hunt” against its members.
“Strecht said the Church had the “moral and ethical duty to collaborate with judicial authorities” on the matter.”
