A Roman Catholic bishop in Southern California was found dead Saturday of a gunshot wound, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
Bishop David O’Connell was found in Hacienda Heights around 1 p.m. Saturday, Deputy Lizette Falcon of the sheriff’s department confirmed Sunday.
Homicide detectives responded to “a shooting death investigation” with a male adult victim, authorities said. The sheriff’s department did not identify the victim as O’Connell until Sunday morning.
O’Connell was pronounced dead at the scene, a neoghbourhood lined with ranch-style homes. It was not immediately clear how or where his body was discovered.
DAVID O”CONNELL was from Glanmire in Cork. He studied at All Hallows College, Dublin, for the priesthood and was ordained for Los Angeles in 1979.
He had a BA degree from UCD and a BD degree from Maynooth.
He also had a Masters in spirituality.
Currently, the LA archdiocese and the LA police department are not releasing details of the death, apart from saying it was “suspicious.”
We know the bishop was found with one gunshot would to his upper torso, and when the police found him, he was bleeding and not breathing.
He was a tireless campaigner on behalf of immigrants, the poor and gunshot victims.
I have a priest contact within LA who says he will keep us informed.
The police are now calling the bishop’s death a MURDER
That means they are seeing a SUSPECT and a MOTIVE
