Dear Bishop Pat,
Last week in his Ad Clerum, Bishop Philip included:
“CLERGY DAY ON WEDNESDAY 28TH JUNE 2023
I would like to invite all priests and deacons in parish ministry to an important gathering in the diocese on the 28th June this year. It will be an opportunity to gather and find out what tools we need to help us as we embark on our Ten-year plan of renewal and restructuring. Please make every effort to come to this gathering. The venue will be the Hampshire Court Hotel, Basingstoke, RG24 8FY. Further details to follow”.
PORTSMOUTH PRIEST:

Whilst this appears an innocent day of sharing his ten-year plan, it is in fact something quite sinister.
In his usual duplicitous way, Bishop Philip is preparing to strengthen his “will to power”.
The “tools” we are going to explore and hear more about is the therapy psychological assessment and supervision that Bishop Philip intends to force on clergy.
The intention is to use this”supervision” to assess, diagnose, label, and control a rebellious priest and to “treat” him if he struggles to see things the way the bishop does.
This supervision has been “bought in,” and Heather Hauschild is the one behind it and is the promoter of such attempts to control “subordinates,” which she employed during her stint of damaging the NHS.

Any priest who attempts to refuse to rebuild the Catholic Church in Portsmouth, according to the divine intuition of the Bishop and Hauschild, will be diagnosed with a disorder and labelled for ever.
Just read again what Philip says above: “It will be an opportunity to gather and find out what tools we need to help us as we embark together on our Ten-year plan of renewal and restructuring.”
God help us in Portsmouth!”
PAT SAYS
Thank you, Father, for your communication.
Has there been any talk, or have you seen any evidence of psychologists or psychological programmes being brought into the diocese?
I’d like to see any evidence or indications.
I don’t think it is the bishop or COO’s job to psychoanalysis priests.
Especially if the priest or his agent does not report unwellness or problems.
It would be very Orwellian or Third Reich like for such things to happen.
I believe that it is the so-called “managers” that have ruined the NHS.
Are they now going to be used to kill off what is left of the RCC?
At source, the RCC, is supposed to be a spiritual family.
Are they now going to employ accountants and psychologists to finish off what the corrupt clerics and hierarchs have started?

See how the nurses brought the government to heel – do the same with Egan – like the nurses grow some balls.

You are right. The priests need to grow a pair and stand up to Egan and his sidekick. Just keeping quiet and just complying is the easy way out, or rather in to a dystopian future. If Egan gets away with this, lots of other bishops will follow. Priesthood is already an emasculated role. If you want to be lackeys then don’t do anything. Hey, just had a thought ! Will PB JPL be first in the list for assessment ? That would be interesting ! Or maybe he’ll be given an opt out as Phyllis’ pet ?!

10:57 You are absolutely right. However ‘lads’ is not an adequate word to describe them and they’re selected on the basis of being personally compromised. There is just no hope of renewal for the Roman Catholic Church when one reads here on this blog and elsewhere the vile outpouring of daily & relentless stalking & abuse & vitriol spewing from the Roman Catholic clergy and their outwardly devout pillars of the community who choose for their own personal & business reasons and motivations to punch their keyboards with repetitive hate and malice toward long suffering and traumatised victims, survivors, families & supporters of those seeking truth and justice against church related abuse, corruption & criminality.
Many of these clergy & their colleagues are also so presumptively paranoid that they imagine that they know or have any right to know the identity of traumatised victims of church related criminality being assisted by Bishop Pat Buckley and other relevant organisations.
Such clergy and their colleagues are beneath contempt.

I’ve no problem with workplace assessment, annual appraisal etc such as you find in many organisations. In my experience it has always, when done properly and respectfully, been a useful tool for awareness, for improvement, for achieving goals, and if necessary in addressing shortcomings. Nothing wrong with that. However, I have never felt in those situations that I was being ‘diagnosed’ or ‘psychoanalysed’ or put under any psychological assessment. There are degrees to being ‘on side’ with the management, and I have often felt myself not onside, and always been able to express that without prejudice and to talk it through. However, if Egan is intent on singling out and isolating people who are not completely on side with him, and might take a different view to him, then that is prejudicial and sinister. It is coercive, authoritarian and fascist. He could well find himself the subject of all sorts of workplace claims and discrimination suits etc. Remember, the days of the Church and bishops being outside the law of the land are long since gone, and Egan could find himself before an employment tribunal or worse if he behaves in ways which are deemed to be against the laws of this land. He needs to be very careful.

Priests’ pensions are paid by the Sheep. Even in genteel retirement, priests continue to sponge off the laity. What do you think the collections for sick and retired priests are all about?
Priests could pay their own national insurance contributions while in ministry to allow them a State pension on retirement, but the vast majority choose to spend the money on themselves, because they know that they can rely on the sentimentalism of the Sheep to care for them in later life. It’s one of the greatest con-jobs in history.😕

I don’t see evidence of anything sinister in the Bishop’s communication. If, as is being suggested, his new way involves psychological assessment of clergy, I’d rail against it with all my might. Spiritual renewal is more important. Seeking more imaginative and relevant ways to live priesthood and celibacy and to be a more inclusive, repentant and humbler church would be far more important than playing mind games with priests. It’s speculation as to the Bishop’s intentions but psychologically analysing priests is a dangerous game. If a priest is not psychologically unwell, he should not be subjected to this abuse of power. Pat, can you ascertain asap what the priest informant knows re: his concerns or if he knows about such a programme to be foisted on clergy. God help us. When I required some important support in the not too distant past my doctor found a super therapist for me. I would not ever give my bishop such information. I believe and I’ve advocated for this, that every Diocese should have a team of lay professional therapists available for priests who are psychologically ill. I paid for all sessions my self and was money well spent. Bishops are to be shepherds for people and clergy, not little gods playing mental, emotional, or spiritual gymnastics with anyone.

Psychological assessment of prospective seminarians has been going on for years as part of the selection process. Check out the St Luke Institute in Manchester. Leon Podles noted the psychological vetting in US seminaries. You might have assumed that it was designed to weed out the gays and obvious crackpots. Leon declared that it failed on both counts.

Whilst not defending the role of Chief Operating Officer, the COO role covers all things physical/temporal (church properties, such as places of worship, presbyteries, schools, and other properties), complex finances and investments, purchasing and expenditure, staffing, property issues, secular policies to comply with the numerous regulations and laws of the land, etc, etc, leaving all matters pastoral and spiritual and the care of clergy to the Bishop. It’s a larger version of a parish set up, where everyone is supposed to help their PP run the parish and its school. With many Dioceses having many hundreds of diverse properties, it’s a bit like running a PLC….and, frankly, operating these “temporal” matters (unless I have missed something) does not come under the vocation of a clergyman or Bishop, who should be evangelising, preaching the Word, and saving souls!

Good morning William
At least the British Roman Catholic Church is being more transparent about the fact and reality that their religion is a FOR PROFIT BUSINESS despite the multiple contradictions in their applications for State and various forms of Public Funding in the form of national & EC Grants & Charity Status registrations etc. etc.
In the Republic of Ireland, white collar “professionals” comparable to Heather Hausland in the UK render their “services” under the “guise” of “volunteering & charity” work in return for local kudos that enables leniency in other areas of their activities and clerical hierarchy proactively enable these white collar “volunteers” in return for financial benefits to the Irish Roman Catholic Church.
The British system is at least making moves in the right direction toward transparency compared to the deeply parochial Irish modus operandi.

The role of a COO is to be the bishops stooge. The COO both takes his/her lead and direction from the bishop and his chancellor. Normally they dont stay too long in the job as they become disgusted at all the shenanigans which goes on. A COO will normally tell a new recruit to forget any notions they have about joining a religious organisation. Diocesan laity in general very quickly lose whatever respect they ever had for the RCC unless they themselves are power freaks and closet Nazis

Bishop Pay – I am a former cleric who left in the mid-2000s and commutes daily to work in London. I earn £100k a year, and people might think I am wealthy – but that’s far from the truth. I receive £5000 net after tax and N.I. My partner is unwell and not able to work. As my income is high, he is only entitled to the higher rate of DLA (mobility element), around £260 a month. I have a modest private pension of around £60k, and the church did not pay all my stamps, so I have had to make up the shortfall. This is my monthly expenditure. I have around £200 left over, and we have not been on holiday for 5 years. We live pretty simply. My plan is that as we have no children to take equity release on the house when I retire at 67 to supplement the state pension and my private pension. Seriously, I led a more comfortable life as a parish priest and never had to worry about the cost of living or retirement provisions.

The anonymous malcontent who communicated with Pat is frightened about what his Bishop might ask of clerics at their gathering in June. The traitor hasn’t given any indication to validate his suspicions, hasn’t so far shown why anyone should be worried. Surely any work assessment in any profession is essential to maintain proper standards, check policy and mission statements, give a time for the sharing of ideas, accept reality and seek a way forward out of our crises. I know for some clerics this assessment is a taking of their freedom to do what they like or to do nothing at all. Father, whoever you are, you need to check yourself with the help of a professional as I fear that if you carry this attitude and unnecessary angst and idle speculation to the June meeting, you’ll wreak havoc and will be marked. For God’s sake, come into the real world and stop imagining the worst…Your comments haven’t exactly been met with much empathy or kindness. The mission statement is the gospel. When did the Church become an NGO? So a priest communicating to Bishop Buckley is considered to be
a traitor requiring professional intervention! Obviously the priest has genuine concerns; what does externally facilitated framework for support, ongoing development, formation and accompanied reflection to equip our clergy for the challenge of leading and serving contemporary missionary communities mean in practice and who is to provide external framework?
What qualifies a lay coo to makes assessments on priestly ministry? Gaslighting is not exactly a good omen of whats ahead in Portsmouth.

Fr Josef Loranc, a priest abused a number of girls in the village of Mutne in 1969 and 1970 while teaching Catholic catechism classes.
Investigators found that he had molested at least 9 girls. He was sentenced to 2 years in prison but only served 1 year.
Following his release the future Pope John Paul wrote to him and invited him back into ministry and eventually moved him to a position as a hospital chaplain.
Neither the Vatican or the Polish church in Rome has responded to the publication of the extracts for this book due out on March 2023

Portsmouth is hardly a bedrock of Catholicism so we may as well amalgamate with the Anglicans.
As for the FSSP Reading, the priests sit in choir at the Chrism Mass which is surely a sign of impaired communion. If they believe in the validity of the NO Mass why don’t they concelebrate?

CHURCH SEX SCANDALS WIDENS: HUNDREDS MORE CATHOLIC CLERGY ACCUSED ACROSS CA
Oakland(CA)
KNTV – NBC Bay Area [San Jose CA]
February 22, 2023
By Candice Nguyen, Michael Bott, Mark Villarreal, and Michael Horn
“Plaintiffs’ attorneys say 1500 new lawsuits have been filed against the Roman Catholic Church in Northern CA alone. The Investigative Unit has independently reviewed nearly 700 of them.”
“An NBC Bay Area analysis of nearly 700 lawsuits filed against Catholic institutions across Northern California over the past three years suggests the church’s child sexual abuse scandal in the region is significantly worse than the public previously knew. More than 200 of the clergy and lay employees of the Catholic Church named in the wave of lawsuits have never been publicly accused of being sexually abusive towards children and teenagers until now, NBC Bay Area’s investigation found. Some of the newly accused continue to work as priests.”

Pat, your blog today is interesting but no matter what you put up for each day, some commenters will always go nasty, vicious and vitriolic against clergy. That said, when you printed the stiry about Bishop O Connell’s tragic death, some of us asked you to be curcumspect and cautionary about speculative reasons for his death. Some of the unkindest and most sinister 8f reasons wete attributed to his death. Some personalised the tragedy by placing a sexual abuse narrative into the reasons for his death. I’ve read much on American journals since and the context of his death is becoming clearer for the authorities. I belueve you shoukd have waited until more accurate information was attained befire allowing a vulture type assassination to pieces of this Bishop. Your LA priest contacts seem very suspect to me and a convenient story was immediately construed for the purpose of scandal. I inly know what authorities are saying and their investigation to date does not have thecsorfid details you attributed to his death. Read the most recent commentary by local journalists in LA. My question is: will you accept that perhaps you preempted the truth with harsh, personalised, mocking judgment leading to a frenzy of very sexualused imaginings about the Bishop? Surely, if you and others are/were wrong, can this be remedied by an apology?

True. And another possible concoction here is a work in progress. According to ex-Deputy Sheriff of LA County, Jose Romero, the Masons did it. Yup! The Freemasons. O’Connell, according to a ‘reliable’ source of Romero, was shot not once, but a number of times in the back of the head, an execution-style killing, and this, apparently, is the modus operandi of said Masons for bumping off, erm, ‘patriarchs’.
Did I mention that Romero is also a Catholic apologist? Like big Bill Donohue?
It’s getting murkier by the day.
Oh! I did say too, didn’t I, that Lt Michael Modica, of the LA County Sheriff’s Dept, has ‘knocked back’ the owing of money by Bishop O’Connell to Carlos Modina (the man charged with O’Connell’s murder), as a possible motive for the crime? At a Press conference, Modica said that Carlos Modina, who had made a full confession, had given ‘several different reasons’ for the shooting, but that ‘none of them made any sense to the investigators’. At this stage, it is beginning to look as though Carlos Modina is ever so flaky. Or… Or might it be that law enforcement here is trying to gaslight Modina to conceal the real motive for the shooting?
Who knows? God does. In which case, can he be subpoenaed? Again, God knows. (God knows a lot, doesn’t he, but doesn’t give much away?😕)
