Glasgow priest who sexually abused girls walks free from court.

Mc GARRITY

https://www.glasgowtimes.co.uk/news/scottish-news/23360646.glasgow-priest-sexually-abused-girls-walks-court/

A SHAMED priest who sexually abused four girls walked free from court today.

Father Neil McGarrity, 68, preyed on his victims at two churches in Glasgow as well as his parish home in the city.

McGarrity played “footsie” under the table with one of the girls and was caught in a “prolonged embrace” with another.

The priest of 33 years, from the city’s Maryhill, also touched and rubbed the girls with one victim, claiming he hugged her while sitting on a couch.

McGarrity was found guilty at Glasgow Sheriff Court of four sexual assaults and one charge of engaging in sexual activity.

The charges span from December 2017 and February 2020 with the girls’ ages ranging between 10 to 16.

Sheriff Vincent Lunny ordered McGarrity to do 250 hours of unpaid work and put him under supervision for three years.

He also tagged McGarrity for nine months keeping him indoors between 7pm and 7am.

McGarrity was placed on the sex offenders register for five years.

SCOTTISH PRIEST WRITES

Today at Glasgow Sheriff Court, Neil McGarritty, a Glasgow priest ordained in 1989 with 8 others including the current Vicar General was sentenced for 5 offences against 4 girls.

He avoided a jail sentence and Sheriff Vincent Lunny gave him an alternative to custody by ordering him to carry out 250 hours unpaid work, tagged for 9months from 7pm to 7am and placed on the sex offenders list for 5 years!

I’ve spoken today to the Grandmother of 3 of the girls and they are absolutely devastated that in their opinion he got off lightly. The Fathers of these girls are angry that their children have been let down by the church and now the state.

For most of his priesthood there have been rumours, allegations and cover ups by three 3 different archbishops and many of Neils victims from previous years are also devastated.

There is no justice!

PAT SAYS

Neil Mc Garrity has been found guilty of sexually assaulting a number of young girls.

His actual actions with the girls were regarded as being at the lower end of such actions, and he has avoided being sent to prison.

He has been put under 3 years supervision and told to do 250 hours of community work and is being placed on the sex offender’s register for 5 years.

He will now face a canonical trial and will undoubtedly never work as a priest again.

However, he is 68 years old and, in most other jobs, would have been retired.

I think justice has been done. He was investigated, prosecuted, tried, convicted, and sentenced.

I hope his victims have not been too badly damaged and that they will fully recover.

Do readers feel the sentence fitted the crime?

Another one who won’t face reality, because the 1950s delusion that Father wouldn’t behave in such ways is much more reassuring, of Faith, and of the belief that Jesus’ priests are all fundamentally good guys.

12:35pm the TRUTH about your comment is that this is sadly TRUE. It’s not WHAT you know, it’s WHO you know with the RCC & it’s TYPES. Freemason Mafioso.

Like

Sentencing isn’t done arbitrarily but is prescribed by law according to the crime. This sentence wouldn’t be unusual for a first conviction.
My personal opinion is that in the UK neither criminal sentences nor damages given in civil courts are proportionate to the life long damage of abuse.

Like

Free, yes, but not so free as he was. Hours of unpaid community work, his reputation in tatters, despised, reviled, monitored, on the Sex Offender’s Register for five years.
McGarrity free? He only thinks he is.

Like

Was this a new behavior between the ages of 61 & 65? After 27 years of celibacy and chastity?
Has this man been evaluated for a dementia or other degenerative brain disease?
Even the era of this occurring is mind blowing.

Like

Some media sources describe McGarrity as 58 years old; others as 68. Proof that everything read is not necessarily credible.
Speaking of the read word, how do you know, even interrogatively, that McGarrity was chaste for 27 years? If he was, he would have been a truly gifted and remarkable human being for exercising such colossal self-control; he would, in fact, be divine. Of course he wasn’t chaste! He’s human.
The question is: has he a history of kiddie-fiddling? Abusers characteristically do.
Hopefully, McGarrity’s conviction will encourage other young people who may have been abused by him to come forward, but not all victims of abuse are willing to do so, for their own reasons. So, if no more allegations against McGarrity are made, don’t read too much into it, like maybe his abusive behaviour was pathological rather than criminal.

Like

It takes an average of 24 years for abuse victims to be able to come forward. Those 27 years of alleged celibacy will just be getting ready to give up their secrets.

Like

My comment about him being chaste had a question mark… it wasnt a statement. I just query how a man’s character might change so suddenly so late in life.
Either
A) something historic has passed under the radar
B) he’s got a degenerative brain issue or midlife crisis
C) a miscarriage of Justice has occurred

Like

11:53 I see what you mean but you’ve got this one wrong. This conviction is for unusually recent abuse cases, and hopefully reflect the victims feeling confident they would be believed.
You are supposing that his behaviour has changed after many years of celibacy. This is certainly not impossible: for example a stroke can change people’s behaviour or illness can sometimes bring out things which have been under the surface of a person for years, and under control.
However the more likely explanation is that this behaviour has actually been going on throughout that time and there will be more complaints to come out. It is likely that any previous victims will come forward as a result of the publicity.

Yes, I know your comment has a question mark.
You aren’t, actually, asking two questions, you are asking just one: ‘Is this a new behavior (sic) between the ages of 61 and 65, AFTER 27 YEARS OF CELIBACY AND CHASTITY’?
The question is about McGarrity’s criminal behaviour, not about whether he had been celibate and chaste for 27 years; this you simply presume true.

Like

11.53
You contend that 12.53 is not asking two questions.
The commennter knows how many questions he is asking.
The semantic and syntactical evidence may be summarised thus:
1. Was this a new behaviour…?
2. Has this man been evaluated…?
For my money, he is asking two questions.

You got the time wrong: you should have said ‘12.58’, not ‘11.53’.

If you believe that HG asked two questions rather than one (incidentally, it was at 12.29, not at 12.53), then the so-called ‘second question’ lacks an interrogative subject and predicate.

The only thing you’ve demonstrated is your inability to ascertain facts, and your woeful ignorance of syntax.

Like

4.12
You claim the second question at 12.29 lacks an interrogative (sic) subject and a predicate.
On the other hand, here is the evidence:-
The subject: this man;
The predicate: Has been evaluated for a dementia or other degenerative brain disease?
Note it’s the predicate which is interrogative.
I rest my case.

HG, paedophiles have a certain sociopathy, or even psychopathy. A psychiatrist described Fr Brendan Smyth as ‘a psychopath’.
What’s my point? Paedophiles, like sociopaths or psychopaths, tend not to think ahead to the possible legal consequences of their behaviour. They can be very impulsive, caring only for the moment, and out to satisfy, as swiftly as possible, whatever urge they are experiencing. So, don’t let your mind be blown by what McGarrity did in this ‘era’.

Like

@12.33 – I’m glad we are in agreement but wish you had understood the point I tried to make.
@12.14 – you are supposing he is a sociopath. That wouldn’t have suddenly appeared. Are you inferring he was for his whole life and therefore historical victims will now appear?

Like

HG, I said that paedophiles have a ‘CERTAIN sociopathy’, not full-blown sociopathy. By this, I meant that they share some of its characteristics; I mentioned one of them: very impulsive behaviour without any regard to its possible legal consequences. In a nutshell, they can behave with extraordinary recklessness. They aren’t always the clever manipulators, planners, and plotters some credit them for.
There is no evidence whatever that McGarrity has any form of dementia, but there IS evidence that priests convicted of abusing children and/or adults will use the claim of dementia to avoid either trial, or sentencing. Think of ex-cardinal Theodore McCarrick, and Fr John Murray.
It is a characteristic of those convicted of raping/molesting children that the offences for which they were sentenced are unlikely to be their first and only ones. Given McGarrity’s (admittedly disputed) age, it is statistically probable that he has a longer history of such offending.

Like

“Do readers feel the sentence fitted the crime?”
No Pat. If they molest, the gardaí/police must arrest. Just as ++Eamon must rebuke Fr. Tom Deenihan to set an example, the courts should have sentenced McGarrity to 3 years prison instead of 3 years supervision.
“Andersen noted that Bishop Deenihan reported Andersen’s allegations of harassment to the police — but only, he said, after Andersen had written to the apostolic nuncio to report Kirby’s harassment. Still, the bishop’s police report would seem to indicate that Deenihan understood the seriousness of the issue, he thought. How could the bishop report allegations of misconduct to police while confirming the accused in a leadership position?”
Can safeguarding in the diocese of Meath explain this? If not, why not? Why do Fr. Declan Hurley, Fr. Joe Gallagher and Fr. Paul Connell tolerate this? Parents in the diocese must be suffering from safeguarding anxiety? And if you tolerate this then your… will be next? Very concerning.

Like

Seamus your point about safeguarding is perfectly reasonable however I think by now parents who take their children to a RC church aren’t noticeably concerned about their children’s safety. They probably take them to play in a quarry after mass.

It is astonishing that, with all the scandals of sexual abuse still unfolding with the horrendous hurts caused, for life for many and with the spotlight so firmly on church personnel, that any priest would be so careless, reckless and irresponsible – morally blind – to think or believe that touching a child or young person or playing footsies was acceptable and just “fun”. It’s outrageous that this priest crossed all boundaries and that his behaviour was a distortion of moral norms and child safeguarding policies. He has now been found guilty of unacceptable behaviour and been given a sentence which will ensure that he will eventually be removed from priesthood. I hope the young people he targeted are receiving necessary counselling and support which should be paid for by the Church.

This seems a very flimsy case to me. At least on the facts that I can read. There may be more to it ? However, a little bit of enthusiastic affection, and inadvisable familiarity with young girls it may be, but that doesn’t sound like sexual abuse to me. Although, I guess in this day and age you only have to look at someone in a way that they don’t like and you can pretty much be accused of anything ! I think this man is being hung out to dry for very little reason. I suggest the howling angry mob on here have a little think back over the decades and remember all the inappropriate things they have done that could land them in the same courtroom. That might make them think twice about baying for the blood of this priest.

Like

‘remember all the inappropriate things they have done’
Interesting admission. I personally don’t go around touching up young girls and have only ever had consensual sex with adults, and would not look on your attitude as a normal adult attitude.
Thank you for coming back for a second day of showing the readers of this blog how paedos think.

Don’t cha love it when the reverend fathers come up with their own Jesuitical glossary for child-sexual abuse? Feeling up kids becomes nothing less cuddly and Jesus-y as ‘enthusiastic affection’. Sure, wasn’t Father just imitating Christ when he told his anti-social disciples to bring all the little children to him that he might touch them and hug them. And sure, wasn’t McGarrity behaving in no less ways?
Shame on all of you for daring to impugn this good man!
And this, folks, is why you must never leave your precious, innocent child alone with a Roman Catholic priest, for he may cross boundaries no one should ever cross, his rationale that he was doing no more than Jesus himself would do.

I knew Fr McGarrity some years ago and although I didn’t much like him, I had absolutely no reason to suspect him of any kind of sexual misdeeds. Nor did I ever hear any kind of rumour or insinuation about him.
The worst I could say about him is that I thought he was a bit full of himself. For that reason I could imagine him thinking his behaviour was a bit of fun and that the girls would be flattered at his attention. Of course we will never know whether his actions were actually manipulative grooming. It’s possible, and if so, well done to the girls for stopping him in his tracks.

Like

‘A bit full of himself’? Describes a paedophile almost to a tee.
This perverse human quality, habitual hubris, is a power gambit, and it leads those taken with it to see others as inferior, to be exploited. If it combines with certain sexual urges, this exploitation can manifest as sexual abuse, of adults as well as children.

Nothing wrong with hatred of child abuse.

There is, however, anger against McGarrity for what he did, and for his betrayal of the children he abused, and for all the people he let down.

There is, arguably, as much (if not more) anger against the clergy and cathbots here who are eagerly defending McGarrity, with some even declaring, effectively, that what McGarrity did was just harmless fun.

It would be interesting to hear from some Glasgow priests about what they think about this case. I suspect a good number of them are uneasy about the fact that this guy was put through the mangle on the basis of rather thin evidence and fact. I think it will make many clergy nervous about having the remotest involvement and contact with young people. Who knows what will be interpreted from one’s actions ? I think that many priests will want out if they could. The whole clergy field has become a minefield and things can blow up in your face unexpectedly. Those who can and are able do get out increasingly. The poor sods who are stuck just have to retire in to themselves and keep their heads down until they can get out. Remember also, that clergy know these days that they will not get the support they need from a bishop, who will sell them down the river as soon as there is any sign of trouble. In order to save their own big arses.

Like

Good. Future generations will be relieved.

Well, 11.00, priests do promise or vow to obey these men, bishops. So, if his lordship does decide to jettison unwanted baggage, the baggage should be obedient and grateful, and see it all as a manifeststion of God’s loving will. That’s how it usually goes, isn’t it?

Cuddling young girls is not thin evidence. Have a good look at yourself and your notions of acceptable behaviour. And think of children and vulnerable young people who are subjected to these actions.

This comment was left on yesterday’s blog post:
‘McGarrity always had his girls around him. Usually ones who had issues with ‘daddy issues’ or ones that were fragile.’
What this means, if true, is a huge red flag was ignored. Well done, cathbots, you could have recognized the classic sign of a child abuser and didn’t.
Parents, your children are not safe in their churches because they can have priests essentially holding up a big sign saying that they’re a kiddy fiddler and still let him carry on.

Funny how when Pell comes up here y’all start ranting that he was found innocent and you’re all ranting that about this guy as well.

Like

The clergy hate it when one of their own get caught – he was tried by a jury of his peers, found guilty and sentenced.
If he was a Cardinal he have access to cash to appeal – this is a self evident fact: the clerical profession attracts, nurtures and provides access to children and then will fight tooth and nail to cover it up – his biggest sin was getting caught.
Pedastry and the Catholic priesthood are deeply intertwined and has been for centuries and in my view will never change.
Just another nail in the coffin of an institution which does the seeds of its own destruction most efficiently and effectively.

PAPAL ADVISOR SAYS ‘VOS ESTIS,’ FRANCIS’ KEY CLERGY ABUSE REFORM, ‘NOT WORKING’
VATICAN CITY (Vatican City)

“One of Pope Francis’ key advisors on clergy sexual abuse admitted that the pontiff’s signature effort to confront abuse and cover-up is “very often” not working, as part of a virtual conversation with Catholic abuse survivors on March 2.” ” The lack of transparency is often “connected to something that I would describe as complicity in just trying to preserve the good name of one particular person,” said Zollner. “However, he said this reasoning was irrational.” “By doing so, you harm much more the reputation of the person and much more the reputation of the institution,” Zollner said.”Zollner also urged the church to make supporting survivors a primary priority.”
