PHONSIE’S latest nutty bombshell is to impose a CONFIRMATION TAX on every family in Waterford and Lismore!!!
As if enough young people and parents are not walking away from the Church, now Phonsie is going to make them pay for the last sacrament many will bother asking for.
Catholic teachers regularly tell me that the vast majority of their Confirmation class students never attend Mass again.
You might be lucky if some of them want to use the church for a family wedding or funeral.
COST OF LIVING CRISIS
And in the very middle of one of the worst cost of living crisis, when some people are deciding between eating or heating their houses, Emperor Phonsie imposes a Confirmation Tax on such families.
Talk about sensitivity!
Talk about timing!
A GOOD INSIGHT
The fact that Phonsie is introducing a Family Confirmation Tax is a sign of how cash struck Waterford is.
It’s also a sign of the growing cash crisis in the RCC.
Slap it into them, I say!
Maybe it will stop them spending hundreds of thousands on naughty priests?

Bishop Fintan Monahan has demonstrated utter contempt for the long and proud history of St Flannans College and is openly jeopardising its future by attempting to sell off land that was willed by the late Miss McNamara to the school with her conditions provided in a written instruction to facilitate the future expansion needs of St Flannans School which is stated by staff to be now at maximum capacity and requiring expansion to meet increased local demand.
Several other more suitable sites have been identified in the local Ennis area for a new geriatric hospital and in areas where increased traffic congestion so close to a large school could be avoided.
Current and past school staff members have publicly objected to this as have local residents and parents etc.

Evidence please? Bishop Fintan –
Your assertion on the “broader views of the needs of the diocese” requires transparent clarification in the “broader public interest” given the negative impact of your ill considered and vexatious planning application on multiple categories of key worker teachers & associated staff, residents and students in the public sphere of the education, residential and leisure impact including the environmental impact of losing trees that are hundreds of years old if your planning application is successful in securing your Diocese funds for “unspecified and unitemised diocesan needs”.
Perhaps if you were to publicly specify and itemise these “Diocesan needs” this would be an unusually transparent approach that may be appreciated by those severely impacted by your vexatious decision to recklessly pursue this sale that is also in contravention of the codicil in the will of Miss Charlotte Mary McNamara who left this land you are selling specifically for future expansion needs of our school St Flannans College.

Don’t you know that the RC institution habitually uses double-speak, or euphemism, or mental reservation, or even all three together (and the rest) in its communications? Anything but straightforward, ‘let your “yes” be “yes” and your “no” be “no” ‘ Jesus-y language? Proves useful when it has something to hide (and it often does), like the apparent truth here.
‘Contribute’ in this case doesnt mean ‘contribute’, does it, any more than ‘Mass offering’ means ‘Mass offering’? Confused? Worry not: it’s just a symptom of recovering from the stupor of the RC institution’s ‘Big Brother’ world of double-speak. Don’t ‘contribute’ and ‘Mass offering’ actually mean ‘pay’ and ‘a charge’ respectively? But euphemistically phrased to appear otherwise?
Catholics, like puppies, are trained not to recognise these sly nuances, let alone react to them morally. It’s useful for the RC institution when it, like ‘Big Brother’, has something to hide, such as the shocking truth that God’s little pups are effectively to be charged for even the putative grace of Confirmation. Of course, Mr Cullinan won’t say this in so many words, and he would probably argue himself hoarse (a not unpleasant prospect) in defence of the moral probity of his innovation, not least because it would look like simony, or might even be simony, a form of RC institutional corruption (one of many) which the Almighty (according to Acts) took a violently dim view of. N-e-v-e-r-t-h-e-l-e-s-s, Mr Cullinan manages to say it anyway, and very well indeed.
The Achille’s heel of Mr Cullinan’s innovation is that it is ill-mannered to thank anyone in advance for anything requested of him. It’s also telling, though this appears to have gone over Mr Cullinan’s head: it suggests not a hope of receiving something from him, but, on the contrary, an outright expectation of it. It’s presumptiously arrogant. And it would deny the person the right of refusal. Why, one might even reasonably describe this expectation as an unqualified, unbridled demand! But, then, I guess Mr Cullinan has no manners, not to mention tact.
I hope that the salt-of-the-earth parents of Waterford-Lismore call Mr Cullinan’s bluff, and boycott his little, sacramental ritual. Why pay for pretentious, baroque codology when, as Jesus himself said, the kingdom of God (God himself) is already within every single person; this includes the Holy Spirit. Why pay for what they, including their children, already have, and were FREELY given? Mr Cullinan would have them believe that he (and he alone) can give them something they lack: the Holy Spirit. For a ‘contribution’, of course?
Don’t dance to this Pied Piper’s tune: when all is said and done, he’ll just guffaw at the lot of you.

Pat, you will vulturise poor Bishop Cullinan under any pretext. He merely offered an opportunity to people to contribute towards Youth Work in his Diocese which is not a bad idea. He’s not imposing a tax!! The young candidates are usually asked to give a little of their fortune to a charity, just a little. Some classes come up with an idea to support as a class. However, we try to persuade parents not to overspend. We suggest pragmatism, being sensible and careful. The Church does not want any family to be anxious or worrying re: clothes, outfits etc…Most are sensible. I have never in 40 years witnessed any imposing of a “fee” on children and families. I’d not ever approve of such. In all parishes I’ve been I ensured that the parish be over generous, even to supplying a party to all classes and their families, paying for booklets, flowers, etc…For the past couple of years we’ve purchased a lovely booklet with inspirational, modern moral/Christian messages for their personal usage. The Bishops wording and timing are wrong but he does not deserve to be attacked by Pat. We know there’s history between them, though the war is one-sided! Let all parishes send out welcome, hospitality, kindness and make the Confirmation Day as memorable and relaxed as possible – not forgetting of course the spiritual dimension. I feel very sorry for young people today because they are living in a time when religious faith is not supported, their homes are not filled with religious icons or practices, they are under the spell of horrible influencers on social media, they are often confused about many things, they are very vulnerable. We as adults forget that the Confirmation age is 12…and these young people need much love, care, guidance and support – and the Holy Spirit of God.

They expect payment for baptisms, weddings, funerals, even for Masses. So, is it really surprising that Bishop Cullinan would ask parents for a financial contribution at their children’s Confirmation? These parents will probably feel constrained to donate. I wonder whether Cullinan has suggested how much a contribution should be.
I expect other bishops in Ireland will have a pecuniary eye on this manouvre to see how lucrative it will be, or to see Cullinan fall on his face.

Father Gerry Magee, who has campaigned for justice for abuse victims, said: “If they’d reported every allegation of abuse against priests when they were first made aware of them, the church would not be in the state it is in today.
“Too much time and effort was spent protecting the institution rather than protecting vulnerable children and adults. There is ample evidence that ‘problem’ priests were moved about.”
The common denominator is always bishops. Bishops must lead with integrity. When they do not, they must be held to account. An Offaly woman must receive a public apology. There are no two ways about it.

My sister and her husband gave each week to their parish offertory collection plus others that come up from time to time. About £900 a year and then the parish claimed back tax. Not a big sum but sizable given their income. Forty odd years supporting their parish.
She arranged a wedding cermoney for their granddaughter and was
shocked when she was hit with a charge for the church, sacristan and priest. She was under the illusion she was supporting all three through their weekly collection. She queried this payment and the PP came back to her with the old “it’s diocesan policy” line. Needless to say she cancelled her direct debits and will arrange the one off payment which will probably be demanded as per diocesan policy, when her time comes to depart this earth. She feels bad about it but that’s life.
Bishop Cullinan has just found another way to rip off the faithful. Disgraceful.
I hope other bishops don’t follow. We all have to live within our means why not the church and it is not poor. Incidently, the PP has just taken delivery of a new car worth at least 35k, maybe more, and is not long back from a ten day ‘short’ break to Portugal.

Sorry this is off topic as I do not wish to derail this thread.
There was one deaf man whom I shared the same dorm for few years. Since he left Cabra decades ago as I haven’t heard from him for many years.
You may be wondering why I was bringing this up today. Cos there was one notorious CB abuser who often picked him for his BJ.
We couldn’t do anything until a deaf guy big for his age, he’s well used to fights and a street brawler. He came in to our dorm as he thumped that notorious CB one night as we all laughed. Cos that CB was shocked and staggeringly getting up by saying ‘who hit me’.
It was only this morning that I heard that sad news re him who ended up in ICU. Previous traumas might be too much for him as I’m only guessing here… I’m not an expert.
So i am asking you priests and lay people as well to say one little prayer for him so that God may be merciful and heal him or recover etc.

One CB who got thumped big time as he never went back to that bed ever again. That was the main message to him that night. Friend texted me this morning that deaf man had a hard life in Cabra cos since from age 5 or 6.
I was bit lucky as compared to him. Cos went to different school instead at age 4 then cabra at age 10. Plus I used to tell any CB that I would report no matter what. Then I was marked afterwards. I just wanted to defend myself from them.

Why shouldn’t we ask for a donation (it is a donation and not a charge as the headline ‘mistakenly’ leads us to believe)? If non-attending parents consider it okay for me to contribute week after week towards the education of their child (if regular mass goers don’t then who does), then it’s more than fine by me to ask them for a donation towards the several thousand I’ve already shelled out. Someone has to pay for the daily upkeep of the church they expect to be able to ‘use’ (free of charge) once every ten years. If parents attend and contribute every week, then there’s no obligation to do so at all; they’ve already paid. Not a problem really.

When you post such comment it indicates you have little understanding of social pressures and psychological blackmail.
Probably indicates that you’re a priest too. Most of them live in an environment and from a background which cultivates such blinkered perspectives.

Ah bless your little contrary heart.
A tax is fiscal within the context of todays blog – a confirmation tax. Clergy or candidates for ordination are not invited to pay a tax for thei ordination ceremony whereas lay people are invited to pay a tax for their sacramental privilege, be it marriage or confirmation.
I know it’s difficult but do try and keep up.
What’s next a tax or wedge for the sacraments of Anointing of the Sick and Reconciliation!!

It’s a mystery. Why do modern parents bother with silly, superstitious Catholic rituals these days? Nothing happens at them. It’s all in their heads, and what is in those heads wss put there by an education system dominated by a morally disgraced church and its priests. So again, why do modern parents bother with those rituals, especially since they are organised and administered by priests?

My favourite thing about this blog is the way the clergy start foaming at the mouth.
I hope that gives them a taste of what it’s like not to be believed and not to be in control. This is what they could do with far more than any amount in donations.

I stopped all my payments to the catholic church 8 years ago and give my money to a dog rescue instead. A lot of little canine souls saved and I know how the money’s spent. Couldn’t be happier. Highly recommend it!

A much more useful trajectory than the RCC’s plunging decline.
Well ✔️ done.
Best way to treat the RCC.

The air fares of those American nuns to the diocese who have no interest in being inculturated into Ireland with their American forms of religion have to be paid for.

Anyone who’d think that the Irish form of religion is worth emulating or inculturating into, needs their head examined. It’s a sorry tale of guilt, Jansenism, rushed Masses, a Low Church mentality, no intellectual interest in theology, and is notorious for being the global epicentre of clerical and religious abuse.

It’s doubtful you ever had a sense of balance if that’s your best effort at summarising Irish culture. But if you did it’s well and truly deserted you.

Completely confused by this thread. Who is the ex-seminarians turned lapsed catholic? This thread is all over the place and doesn’t make any sense. None of it has any relevance to the topic.
Incidentally, it has become more laborious in the last few days to get into this blog. The internet now comes up with all sorts of dates instead of the blog.

This is the sort of thing that the Church has got right, shining out from all the awful, criminal and abusive behaviour that we hear about on this blog. If only the Church would concentrate on this kind of thing rather than working to uphold a clerical and hierarchical culture of priest and bishop. The Church’s teaching on Social Justice and also on the seamless teaching of Respect for Life are the only bits of Church teaching that I value these days. As for the rest, well, I’ve given up on that a long time ago….
