People Before Profit TD Paul Murphy has said he and his partner plan to raise their new baby gender neutral.
The new dad announced the arrival of his first child with partner Jess last month, who they have named Juniper.
In an interview with the Irish Times, Mr Murphy (39) explained the couple’s decision behind opting not to use gender-specific language. They had decided on the baby’s name before the birth.
“Regardless of whether it was male or female, it was going to be Juniper. I think it’s a gender neutral name,” he said.
We’re not gendering it. So, we’re not describing Juniper as a boy, we’re describing Juniper as a baby, but it is male.
“We live in a deeply sexist and gendered society which creates certain expectations for boys and certain expectations for girls. And those things are changing in a positive direction, but there’s a very, very long way to go.”
PAT SAYS
I may be very old-fashioned and unwise, but I can not get my head around the whole gender neutral and gender neutral pronouns debate.
I am male. I am a gay male. I have never wanted to be anything but male. I am 100% attracted to males. I have absolutely no sexual attraction to females.
But I have no problems with females. I grew up six sisters. I’ve always had close female friends.
I find some females very attractive in various ways – in appearance, emotionally, etc.
UPBRINGING
I was reared as a boy, a male. I would not have wanted it any other way.
For various reasons, I found childhood and puberty quite painful and challenging. Being sexually abused at 6 complicated it all further.
Growing up gay in “Suicide Bomber Catholic Ireland” with all its guiltriddeness and denunciation was very hard.
Being brainwashed in RC schools and seminaries deepened the fog of confusion.
But I never wanted to be a “Juniper”. That might have very well sent me over the edge.
I was never schizophrenic – but if people kept calling me, “THEY,” I may have become so.
I’m absolutely in favour of total acceptance and practical compassion and care for people with sexual and gender issues and dilemmas.
But this whole transgenderism movement leaves me with so many questions and suspicions.
150 replies on “IS RAISING CHILDREN AS “GENDER NEUTRAL” A PRESCRIPTION FOR DISASTER?”

Pat, you’re not unwise. There’s a politics of teansgenderism developing that’s very alarming. That babies and young children – as in USA – are being facilitated by professionals to choose their own identity, attending seminars with their parents and signing up for all kinds of medical procedures at 6 years of age, even younger, is morally reprehensible. There are very vociferous ideologues who are creating new “beings” and “concepts” which strike at the heart of what it means to be a human being. The blurring of scientific evidence by political and transgender ideologues will leave huge psychological problems for many in the future. I have a certain sympathy for people who feel trapped in a body they feel they don’t belong to, but the creation and promotion of gender choices so aggressively presents many moral, ethical, medical and religious challenges. What will happen when more of us may find ourselves in an Enoch Burke like situation? Where is freedom of religious beliefs and conscience? A very aggressive feminist movement is also adding their voice to the “do whatever we want with our bodies” philosophy, irrespective of consequences. We should read the report on the Tavistock centre in London…What an eye opener. Adults are playing God with children’s and young people’s lives. Look at You Tube documentaries from the USA and view what’s really happening to children. Many questions need asking. Urgently. Many of the advocates of this new freedom are avid supporters of abortion, decriminalization of drugs and euthanasia. I was, with God’s design, born a male and want to honour my maleness as a gift. I would hate to think that my great grand nephews may be forced not to name their babies until they all attend teansgenderism classes first. Our schools are going to face huge challenges. The soccer and sports clubs of all kinds will face similar challenges. I as a parent would not want my daughter to go to any toilet but a ladies toilet both to one frequented by transmen or women.

Hard enough to keep kids safe these days without making things even more complicated.
They can choose their lifestyle when old enough to make such a fundamental decision.
What happened to let kids be kids and no wonder poor mental health and suicide is sadly such a major issue for the youth of today.

Yes, inter-sex children, rather than their parents/guardians or doctors, should be allowed to determine their sex, however long this may take AND, crucially, based on their gender identification.
Sex and gender are not the same.

That’s the problem – there are some who are born with both sets of genitalia, so they are both boy AND girl. How such individuals are brought up by their parents/guardians must be difficult – and for the child as well! Mother Nature can be cruel perhaps, but these genuine individuals need support. Those who are born with the outward appearance of boy or girl may think they are in the “wrong body” and want to change gender – but surely this should be after counselling, medical advice, etc, and when they are old enough to make their own decisions.

Over forty years ago, one of my lecturers at Queen’s University in Belfast told his students that he, and his wife, had performed a sociological experiment on their baby daughter: they had decided to see how she would react growing up without their imposing on her culturally or societally derived gender norms, e.g. they allowed her to choose which toys to play with rather than give her toys culture/society thought appropriate for girls. They discovered that at least some of these norms had not been generated by anything as abstract as culture or society, but had, in fact, been instinctive: their daughter chose to play not with ‘boy’s toys’, but with those culture/society perceived fit for girls.
Paul Murphy, if he isn’t the gender ideologue I believe him to be, will also discover these instinctual truths about his child. If he is such a fanatic, he may do his child serious psychological damage, and cause it bitter resentment.

Yes, you are right. Which is why it is essential to allow a child to develop its naturally derived gender, regardless of its sex. My lecturer at Queen’s understood this, eventually.
Trying to force a child into gender neutrality (which is what Paul Murphy appears to be doing to his child) may be just as psychologically damaging as trying to force a child to conform to a gender role determined by culturally or societally perceived notions of gender based on the sexual binary, that is, on whether a child is biologically male or female (its sex).
There is no such thing as gender neutrality: everyone has a gender, just as (with relatively few exceptions) everyone has a clearly identifiable sex. But gender, unlike sex, is awakended to: if you like, ‘is grown into’, sometimes over considerable periods of time.
Gender should not be predicted for anyone, nor should it ever be rushed.

Anyhow, I feel for a child that is born to people who bang on about all this trans stuff. They will be encouraging the child to ‘explore’ different options for itself, which probably will just confuse and destabilise it. It will have enough difficulties to navigate without all those ones being imposed on it by its woke and right on parents.

No, 12.14, parents won’t be encouraging their child to ‘explore’ any such thing, as though they were having the child whimsically pick a sexual or gender identity. Don’t be so shallow.
Such parents allow their child the freedom to become what they naturally are.

Lord above!! Will they ever get sense, and he is a T.D.!! Ireland is rearing them still!
I wish little Juniper a contented life ahead, and hope they have not done him a disservice already.
The Gaelic names for this Juniper shrub or small tree were Aittin or Aiten, and Samh., which would have been more acceptable and, make life easier for the child growing up.
Were they thinking along these lines, “Junipers have the capacity to self-prune, shedding branches for survival, and its sap is rot resistant”. There’s an awful lot which may be relevant to the little one, or, more precisely to sperm donor and the baby carrier. What is their reason for it’s (his) need to be reared gender neutral?

Judeo-Christian anthropology is clear: God created two biological genders (sex) male v female. Biology affirms the binary analysis notwithstanding genetic mutation ie hermaphroditism or other anomalous conditions.
Culture or religious ritual can impose itself – castration, eunuchs but the pre-existing gender (sex) remains unchanged.
Psychiatry and mental illness throw up a range of conditions: transvestism or cross dressing or transsexualism but again the gender remains unchanged.
A man born a man who transitions into a woman remains a man: he has no womb or ovaries same for a woman to man she has no prostrate gland or testicles that produce testosterone.
The current debate is less a debate and more a war between essentialism and social construction.
Self evidently essentialism will win the war because in the beginning God created male and female – there is no third sex although there are various orientations.

Whatever about adults having challenges about their gender and sensuality, adults should not be focusing any extreme ideology, experimentation or gender realignment procedures on children, who are often as young as 4/5/6. RE: Mr. Paul Murphy deciding with his other half, to refer to their newborn as an “it”, – Juniper – the “ut” that was gifted to them – a boy, a human being, should count its blessings. Mr. Murphy is an extreme abortionist, calling for and supporting abortion up to birth for any reason. If “it” – Juniper – had any “abnormality” inside its mother’s womb, “it” wouldn’t be here! The innocents human baby would have been aborted. THE HYPOCRISY, DISTORTION OF VALUES AND MORAL RELATIVISM IS APPALLING. Adults are not suppise to experiment with their children’s lives. WInder will People Before Profit change to “WE” BEFORE PROFIT…

Your mate and informant – Paddy McCafferty is transphobic and against abortion up until the point of Labour. Yet you claim to be moderate and modern. I doubt that very much now.

Paddy you need to leave corpus with your boyfriend and live your own authentic life – not creating babies

How is it fair that as a gay man, I know there are priests out there, who have vowed celibacy, and yet are getting more sex than me.

Forget about sex, some even get more hugs and kisses and affection thrown at them than your average Joe. I would love a wee compliment from my boyfriend every now and again, but all I get is critique and negativity, yet I tell him how he is gorgeous all the time.

He obviously does not find you attractive and is stringing you along Mrs, you would be best being single than tolerating that

Juniper is a horrible name, it’s as well it’s being raised non binary. I hope when ‘it’ turns 5 it rebels and tells everyone it’s a he/him/his

I was raised a male but I loved barbies and girly stuff. But never did I question my gender. Jeysus wept, what is happening to the earth? If my grandfather could see these children claiming they are all sorts of genders he would be digging his way from the grave.

You’re gay, I take it. Many people don’t understand this, anymore than they do transgenderism.
You’d think you’d have made more of an effort.

Pat you are lucky, if you go into hospital at the minute you will be looked after by males and females. Most likely Indians. When I am your age I will be looked after by drag queens and ‘they’ people. Our elderly get confused at the best of time, god help me and my peers.

Well, the first time we met
You said you’d never settle down, without a doubt
You said your ex still comes around and lives next door
I found his things around your house
What’s that about?
Don’t take a genius, yeah I see it
Even my friends hate that I’m with you
A million reasons, I should be leaving
I need more hands to count all the issues
But I keep on runnin’ through these red flags
I’ll blame myself because I know it’s bad
But I keep on runnin’ through these red flags
I see the signs, but I still want you
But I keep on running through them
You don’t touch my body
I listen to nobody
Nobody can stop me
I keep on running through these red flags

It’s a man’s world and if I had a child I would want it to be a boy, even transitioning is easier for males to females. Everything is just much easier.

Pat, I’m sure you’re aware that a recently ordained priest in an English diocese left the priesthood last year to transition and is now living as a woman in another city?

I feel sorry for anyone trapped in a body they don’t feel they belong to. We have all been there, where we feel trapped in loveless relationships but yet we plough on with them, but to plough on being a man when you feel like a woman must be tough.

A lot of rest rooms in the city are now gender neutral – I find it disgusting seeing filthy urinals in with the cubicles where I would urinate. All these brash men standing shaking their penises as I wash my hands, I’m sorry dear but I would rather be incontinent.

I have heard of one young deaf man who changed into a woman few years ago. He was supported by his mother as he’s now living in Uk. The reason was that uk are more open minded than 🇮🇪.
Never met him but heard stories re operation changing his gender. That reminded me of the ladyboys in Thailand known as 3rd gender ‘.
I recall on my 1st visit to BKK (long ago) in short for Bangkok,i didn’t believe the idea of ladyboys until I entered a money bet with a friend of mine to see if she is a man or woman. I lost that bet cos it was a man with boobs naked from waist down.
Realised it was very difficult to spot a ladyboy even now as I wouldn’t know it until he or she entered our hotel bedroom. Then I kicked her out after finding out its a ladyboy. However the consequences of this was that I have to pay her cos she as ladyboy, entered the hotel room. Hotel receptionist explained to me as rule of a thumb to pay he or her when entering a hotel bedroom etc.
That was my mistake, typical tourist mistake as I’m little bit more wiser now than I was some 8 years ago.

This is an interesting bit re various dioceses h/tip to church militant.
Extract –
recent “reorganization” plans many dioceses are seeking to implement have served as a cover for the bishops to sneak their assets into different holdings that victims can’t access. It also allows them to gain even more control over their priests.
Does it remind you of a particular diocese in uk😉
