My brother bishop, Phonsie,
As you are aware, I have long-standing connections with the Diocese of Waterford and Lismore: I was a seminarian at St John’s College: I was ordained to the priesthood in the Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity, by one of your predecessors, Bishop Michael Russell; and I maintained a long-standing friendship with the late Monsignor John Shine.
Recently, I have received information from a priest of the Diocese of Waterford and Lismore, who was categorical that he had seen the former Abbot and Ordinary of Mount Melleray Abbey, Fr Richard Purcell, OCSO walking around the monastery, during a visit to the abbey for a period of prayer and reflection.
As the Ordinary of the canonical territory in which Mount Melleray Abbey is located: are you in a position to deny or confirm the presence of Fr Purcell at the abbey? Of course, I appreciate you have no jurisdiction over Mount Melleray Abbey, a monastery of Pontifical Right. However, your jurisdiction extends to whether a priest of that abbey can exercise priestly ministry within your canonical territory — that is not in dispute; it is a well-established principle of canon law.
In any event, I direct your attention to the photographs that evidence the presence of Fr Purcell at Mount Melleray Abbey. These photographs appeared in the Dungarvan Leader on February 24, 2023. I trust you will not be obtuse to suggest they have been “photoshopped”. Instead, I hope you will deal with the substantive questions that arise from the presence of Fr Richard Purcell in one of the most venerable of the Irish Cistercian houses.
His notorious and infamous activities in Dublin-based gay saunas and the fact that his sexual activity within the confines of Roscrea-based Mount Saint Joseph Abbey was known to and acknowledged by the former Abbot General, Dom Eamon Fitzgerald OCSO is scandalous. Fr Purcell’s despicable and deplorable behaviour has brought shame and scandal to his monastery and order in Ireland and internationally.
Moreover, that Dom Eamon Fitzgerald, OCSO, was aware of Fr. Purcell’s proclivities in sexual activity evidences what is negatively systemic in the Order and a culture of sustained cover-up. This is the harsh and ugly reality of the Irish Cistercians.
Yesterday, a commentator on my blog highlighted that Fr Purcell does have the right to return to the monastery by virtue of the transfer of his monastic stability from Mount Saint Joseph Abbey to Mount Melleray Abbey following his election as the abbot. I have no knowledge of canon law or the law proper of the Order of the Cistercians of the Strict Observance, however, it does seem that it is permissible for Fr Purcell to return to his abbey. But the fact that Fr Purcell resigned in sexual scandal means his return to Mount Melleray Abbey is an act of extraordinary imprudence. It is also a deeply ill-judged act that will beget fresh scandal for the Irish Cistercians.
For reasons that are self-evident it is now appropriate and salutary for the greater good of the Irish Cistercians and the local church that is the Diocese of Waterford and Lismore to ask the following legitimate questions.
When did Fr Richard Purcell return to Mount Melleray Abbey? Is it possible that you were not alerted to the proposed return of Fr Purcell to abbey? Is it possible that Fr Purcell was only making a brief visit to the abbey? However, if Fr Purcell has returned to Mount Melleray Abbey on a permanent basis — the further following questions spontaneously arise.
When did you receive notification of Fr Purcell’s proposed return to Mount Melleray Abbey? If so; from which individual did you learn of Fr. Purcell’s proposed return? Was it from Fr Rufus Pound, OCSO, the Monastic Commissary appointed by the General Chapter or from the Abbot General, Dom Bernardus Peeters, OCSO who conducted the so-called Apostolic Visitation of Mount Melleray Abbey to ascertain whether it was true that Fr Richard Purcell was whoring around gay saunas in Dublin?
Did you welcome the return of the scandal-ridden Fr Purcell to your canonical territory or did you roll your eyes in disbelief at this act of unprecedented asininity?
Could it be possible that you decided to exercise the pastoral prerogative of mercy by indicating that you would welcome his return and in an act of misguided charity — spontaneously offered Fr Purcell priestly faculties with immediate effect to minister publicly within the Diocese of Waterford and Lismore?
At the time of this writing, does Fr Purcell have faculties from his superior to celebrate the Eucharist publicly at Mount Melleray Abbey and to celebrate Mass in any church within the canonical territory of your diocese?
Does Fr Purcell have your written permission to hear confessions at Mount Melleray Abbey? Does Fr Purcell have faculties to hear confessions in the Diocese of Waterford and Lismore? If so; have you granted him a faculty to absolve from the delict of abortion?

Out of respect for Mount Melleray Abbey, I have not published my extremely detailed affidavit outlining the past allegations that I made against Fr Purcell on my blog: however, I may do so in the not-so-distant future.
I would be grateful for a prompt acknowledgement of the present with the answers to the legitimate questions contained, herein.
Because I believe transparency is good for Mount Melleray Abbey and for the Irish Church, I will publish this correspondence on my blog.
+ Pat Buckley

If Purcell wants to re-insert himself in to monastic life, he should be doing so quietly, prayerfully and out of sight. Knowing what we know about him, the optics of him glad handling and greeting good people just does not sit well. He may well think that he has done his purgatory and is a reformed character, but there is an important element of rehabilitation that regards the feelings and opinions of those around you. Even though people are generally compassionate and forgiving, they do not like their noses rubbed in it. So, my recommendation is that Purcell moves to somewhere he is not known, and lives a very quiet and secluded life out of the public eye. Oh, and avoid the local sauna. That would be a good start ! The same criteria should apply to Rory and JPL and any others who think that they can just waltz back in and expect us to see their reintroduction as genuine. Forgiveness and embrace takes time.

Egotistical bastardo clerics and their bitchette types shouldn’t be “re-inserting” themselves anywhere let alone back into churches and monasteries but they find the wealthy lifestyle and privileges simply irresistible.

+Pat,
Respectfully his return is a matter for his community and order to decide. You are right to ask about public faculties though asvthese are a matter for the Bishop outside the walls. Priests have had them removed for less.
But I challenge you thus – do the people in the photos know his history of accusations? And have they chosen to forgive him and recognise his monastic ministry for what it is, “warts and all”? What I mean is has this happened transparently and with genuine forgiveness that none of is should interject into?
I am no fan of his behaviour but the Trappists have been my comforters and supporters for many years.
LikeLike
Holy Goat, you have felt comforted and supported by Trappists.
I have commented here that everything that has happened over the past few decades makes much more sense if you assume the church is a criminal organization and the religious bit is a front staffed by marks.
In that case while the comfort you have felt has been real to you, both you and possibly the monks comforting you are part of the front.
You are especially part of the front as a priest, apparently a well intentioned one.
But in reality you are providing a front for a scam, where the abuse, sex and money are the point.

I understand your point. At times I believe I have been scammed by the Church too but never by the message. The message is real. Christ loves us and we all need forgiveness. We cannot go down the route of who needs forgiveness more.
But while some folk just shouldn’t be priests – if those who are good priests just ignore the message that won’t solve much really.

CATHOLIC WATCHDOG NAMES BISHOPS TIED TO SEX ABUSE AND URGES POPE TO ACT
By Marisa Iati
Updated March 15, 2023.
“Prominent researchers of accountability for clergy sexual abuse called on Pope Francis on Wednesday to release the names of bishops investigated by the Vatican since the implementation of 2019 rules that overhauled how the church responds to abuse accusations. The watchdog group, BishopAccountability.org, criticized the pope at a news conference for failing to give a “full accounting” of the impact of the revised rules, which they called a landmark effort to combat abuse. The organization also released a list, based on news reports from around the world, of 40 bishops who have been investigated under the four-year-old law.“The pope has repeatedly said he wants transparency, yet he is leaving the faithful in the dark,” Anne Barrett Doyle, the group’s co-director, told reporters Wednesday. “Survivors and Catholics in the pews not only need this information; they have a right to it.”https://www.washingtonpost.com/religion/2023/03/15/catholic-sex-abuse-bishops-pope-francis/

Not necessarily fair to blame the old folks, 2 faced clerics like Purcell and his types home in on them.
Don’t forget clerics and their cohorts are experts in character assassination, these days they use internet and other sources to circulate photos and vehicle descriptions as well as confidential data sourced anywhere their connections work/volunteer etc., in order to slander and discredit victims and survivors of church related abuse, corruption and criminality.
Today’s clergy and their cohorts have zero respect or integrity, that’s all part of them deciding to a committee to the internationally recognised bastion of human rights abuses operating worldwide from its Vatican headquarters with Fraudulent Frankie at the helm and Saint John Paul II now outed as a confirmed paedophile protector.

I don’t think many old folk would be one bit surprised, and are more compassionate and tolerant than given credit, they likely think along the lines, many religious men and women have a a special person in their lives whether it be sexual, or, platonic. Maybe that’s why so many in monastic communities all seem so contented, the opposite to what one might expect.
There is more to us all than our sexuality.

+Pat, you have done the Cistercians in Ireland a great service by highlighting their institutional hypocrisy. We must not forget that Richard Purcell has never publicly denied the allegations that were repeatedly made on this blog.
Did Dom Peeters and M. Pascale Fourmentin visit The Boilerhouse to ascertain was Purcell a visitor? Did they interview Bishop Pat Buckley the source of the allegation and examine any evidence in his possession? Instead, we were treated to a sham visitation with a predetermined outcome. And then the rest of us are led to believe the sophistry that the allegations were “unfounded”.

Now, of course, within the law that is but I’m unaware of any comments on this blog that are outside the law.
A culture of ‘offence’ erodes the right to freedom of expression and no one can go through life without being offended tge trick is not to take offence when no offence is meant.

Those protecting Richard Purcell need to watch their backs. Richard is ruthless and ambitious and will see this as a temporary little set back. Richard depends on the institution and structure of the RCC to protect him, and he may be right. But be warned, Richard has the ability to turn on those loyal to him overnight and throw everyone under the bus. There can be little doubt Richard has the dirt on so many in the RCC, he has been very active on the gay scene (insert jokes here) and has made friends with many on the gay scene. He will have been told little stories and anecdotes late at night, guaranteed that these have been noted and filed. If Purcell falls the implications for the Irish RCC will be seismic. Names will follow, leaks will be slow and strategic and many clerics will be sleeping uneasy. This is not a scandal that will produce one Big Bang but a slow and toxic release of very private details – dates and times. My betting is that Purcell will be protected at all costs. The price is too high.

Pat, did you know that Maynooth University is applying for planning permission for new student accommodation just outside the gates of St Patrick’s College? So what, you might ask, until you hear that it will be called Buckley House. Imagine the lols when the bishops pass that during their visits.

Francis talks in riddles. He constantly contradicts himself. What he says so often doesn’t seem to be considered. He just seems to talk off the cuff. That is confusing and not a bit dangerous for someone in his position. People listen to what he says and come away confused and uncertain. His minders need to stop him giving these ad lib impromptu interviews. I wonder how much advice he takes before spouting off ? He should be more careful, more considered and more responsible, given the position he holds.

Jesus spoke in riddles, too, causing exasperation, even, at times, some of his disciples to walk away in disgust (eat my body, drink my blood).

The Met police are investigating drug use amongst members of Parliament and it is said to be rife, I think the PSNI need to open up and investigate drug misuse amongst clergy in NI and not just in the RCC but across the board, a very well respected Elder at church close to me has a really bad drug and sex habit

For legal reasons I can not name him, but I have reported a priest and a man to the authorities for performing a sexual act in toilets in Fivemiletown. I’m sure it will be a matter of time before his name will be released.

It’s not about a priests sexuality which deems him fit for the job, it is his vow of celibacy. To say a gay man is not a particular fit for any job based on sexuality is the epitome of homophobia.

Someone mentioned above that Richard Purcell had a Prince Albert on his penis.
It was made to match his pectoral cross when he became an Abbot.

I don’t believe that even Richard Purcell would stoop that low.

Isn’t it obvious that there is one or more commenter, presumably an aggrieved ‘victim’ of this blog, posting rubbish to see what Pat will wear.
Pat if you know full well a comment is obviously untrue, like the Prince Albert one, why publish it and make people wade through the amount of shite you publish knowing to be false?
We all know you worked for the NotW but you don’t have to aspire to Fox News levels you know.

I appreciate your message is intended for Bishop Pat so forgive me for responding (not on his behalf of course) but on my own.
I feel for you I really do – the local scandal of your me PP caught sleeping with a local lady’s adult son is shocking enough but pretty standard and passé for Catholic clerics.
Frederick Martel has written a book called In the Closet in the Vatican power, homosexuality and hypocrisy – it’s a depressing but necessary read: in it he highlights the fizzing hypocrisy of US Cardinals and Bishops and only recently the secretary of the US Catholic bishops resigned because every city he was in on behalf of the USBC he was on a Grindr hookup!
Staggering and brazen hypocrisy.

Everyone is on the sexuality scale and nobody stays at one level all the time but fluctuates over time. A priest from the early 90s would be regularly rumoured to be in bed with someone’s wife as equally as someone’s husband, think the man was just happy to get a bit every now and again.

This lifestyle is rife in clergy around the world. I have partied with a Lisburn area priest for years and we have attended many orgies, with which there were other clergy men. I myself do not take drugs but the clergy I have participated with have loved the pure MDMA and Cocaine. One priest from Antrim area use to even celebrate mass while high from the night before.

Gay Orgies are not uncommon in the South Belfast and clergy do attend. Perhaps the earlier poster mentioning clergy from the Lisburn and Antrim area may be thinking of the regular orgy I refer to. Drugs are very much part and parcel of such group activity. Are people really that niaive to think these things don’t happen in the villages, towns and cities we all live in. Men of the cloth have been having sex for centuries, it’s hardly a secret. It may not be right for a host of reasons but I don’t think we should feign faux outrage and disgust. It happens, get over it. Married men who took serious vows are just as worse if not more worse having sex with others particularly gay men. The majority of guys attending the south Belfast group are married men, some only newly married. They go back to wives carrying God knows what including Covid.

I once heard from a student in the NUI Maynooth that one evening she saw a young lad scale a wall near the seminary and a bit later he returned with another lad, and both scaled the wall. She certainly thought they seemed affectionate with each other, although hurried.
‘Strange Goings On’ would make a grand title for a movie short.

What went on and continues to go on in Maynooth Seminary has sealed the demise of the Roman Catholic clergy in Ireland.
