IS EX BISHOP PADDY WALSH BULLYING VULNERABLE NUN PATIENT IN BELFAST RETIREMENT HOME!

WALSH

LETTER TO GENERAL MANAGER – NARETH CARE VILLAGE BELFAST

CARMEL BLANEY

COPIED TO NAZARETH SUPERIOR BELFAST

25th March 2023

Dear Ms Blaney,

On his public Facebook page, Father Paddy McCafferty – PP Corpus Christi Belfast has claimed that one of your male residents – a Patrick Walsh (93) is “intimidating, frightening and upsetting” one of your elderly female residents – a retired Carmelite nun!

According to Fr Mc Cafferty, this bullying behaviour is taking place in the nun’s private room.

Fr Mc Cafferty repeats this claim in a letter to Patrick Walsh quoted below and again published on Facebook.

“October 18th, 2022 – Feast of St Luke, Evangelist.

Letter to Paddy Walsh last October, 2022, to which, yes, guess what? That’s right! Not a peep out of him in response!

Bishop Paddy

……..

By the way, Paddy, see wee Sr  X? You leave her alone. She doesn’t want you in her room. You are bullying, intimidating, frightening, and upsetting her. Leave her alone and stop harassing her.

You haven’t changed. Terrorising a very frail and saintly little Carmelite sister, just like you did teenage boys years ago, in St Malachy’s College.

Ends

Ms. Blaney, I hereby formally make you aware of this allegation and ask you to investigate it thoroughly.

Sinerely yours,

(Bishop) Pat Buckley

Well done, Bishop Pat, you have done the right thing in bringing this matter to the attention of the nursing home authorities. The elderly or infirm are at their most vulnerable in these places and it’s shameful to learn how they can be abused.

That’s what these clerical trash and there friends in the lowest and highest of places do, exploit the vulnerable.
They only visit hospital patients for the sole purpose of abusing them and ripping them off.
Disgusting parasites.

The Nazareth Care Village complex is vast, and I expect it will have state of the art facilities. I guess it is for the comfortable professional middle classes of Belfast of the RC variety. I don’t think the people of the Falls Road and Divis Flats will be spending their final days in comfort and care there. Paddy Walsh will be costing a lot of money to live there. Not that he will ever have given much thought about what would happen to him during his last years; he just knew that he would be looked after by the diocese. As do most priests. And nuns. Unlike the rest of us who have to think about it, worry about it, save up money for it, end up in some dump rather than the plush surroundings of a Nazareth Care Village. To those who already have, more will be given….

Concerned for elderly nursing home patient allegedly being harassed by Fr Paddy Walsh.says:

As the family of a nursing home resident, we find this abhorrent – might we respectfully suggest that Fr McCaffrey and your good self also contact the various organisations that advocate for the elderly and for patients rights.
Hoping that this elderly lady will be ok and that this Fr Paddy Walsh is directed by the nursing home sister and management to be more respectful of to move to another nursing home. He sounds very territorial indeed and should not be allowed to enter the bedrooms of other patients.
It is likely that Fr Walsh may also be bothering other elderly patients and some may be unable to speak or be too frightened or traumatised at the idea of casting doubt on a holy priest as some older persons still invest a lot of unearned respect in the priests.
What Fr McCafferty has said is very concerning and deserving of a thorough investigation on safety grounds.

Before becoming Bishop of Down and Connor, Fr Paddy Walsh was president of St Malachys College Belfast where he had a reputation for sarcasm and corporal punishment.
As bishop, 1991 – 2008 he further consolidated his reputation for unkindness.
One of his favourites among the clergy was Fr James Donaghy who went to prison for the sexual abuse and assault of young men.

How low can this Bishop go, shocking but not surprising to find him allegedly abusing an elderly nursing home patient. His colleagues won’t have an issue with this, they rarely do. The reputation of the church comes first all of the time and every time.
So the moral of this sorry tale of yet more alleged abuse by a cleric, this time on another cleric Is for everyone to keep their children and vulnerable relatives and friends away from the dangerously dysfunctional Clergy & their corrupt cohorts who are openly deranged in their daily demonstrations of evil anger and quite capable of inflicting grave harm.

I remember meeting Bishop Walsh when he was in power. It had nothing to do with clergy or parishes, but with some secular funding. It was very strange. He was creepy. I had a feeling that he was playing a game and trying to catch me and my colleagues out, and trying to be very clever. Strange experience. I have to say that I know he didn’t get the funding he was looking for.
Yes “creepy” is one word that well describes Walsh in her prime – there are many others of course – vicious, cruel, sadistic, conceited, arrogant, conniving. Oh a very nasty piece of work indeed. A sad and pathetic figure now as death draws near and the accounting to the Creator; but in his heyday…… ???

Just wondering, many irish bishops are like that re bullying behaviours 🤷‍♀️.
Bec they so used getting their own way in terms of power and arrogance.
Never see bishops out in streets now as they are pampered and cosseted in luxury cars and large mansion houses.
Bullying behaviours without check has huge consequences. I was bullied at work long time ago cos deaf and hard worker etc. Nothing was done to address this so I gave them a day notice and left cos was concerned with my mental health which exploded into full blown ptsd. Have no regrets cos bullying continued after I left as ex colleagues were complaining re her. Then no replacement as union was quite useless. I used to see my ex boss in town as he fumed to see my face cos his promotion prospects gone after I named him. No sympathy for him cos it had caused a lot of mental health issues to various ex work colleagues including myself.
I’m inclined to believe that some bishops out there are bullies. But not many irish Catholics are listening to them anymore.
Bishops are now regarded as property management people.

@7.39 “The management will be aware of “any” unacceptable behaviour by “any” resident. ” “Staff are “generally” aware of such potential incidents. ” “the level of vigilance has to be 100%”. These statements contradict each other.

In fact, a number of people have commented on their experience and knowledge of a longstanding pattern of bullying by this bishop, not just the priest in question . This includes information about his ill treatment of vulnerable young boys. Bullies just need a target, they don’t discriminate. I trust this “alleged” but seemingly widely known history was fully investigated prior to admission to a “home” entirely comprising the frail elderly.

I’ve been very blessed to know religious sisters who are loving, kind, mature and highly competent. I think the world of them, but I never cease to be astonished at how they almost swoon and diminish themselves and theiir competency the instant a priest appears. How readily do you think sisters or laity would be to question inappropriate behaviour by a senior member of the clergy?

You cite extensive experience in these settings, but frankly many of your statements show exactly why the catholic church has so many safeguarding issues and why it should not be policing itself.

1.07: Everything being said about Bishop Walsh is from one source only – Fr. McCafferty. Knowing his detestation and anger for this Bishop – justifiable for Paddy – I think we should wait till all information is proven to be accurate. The management will be aware of any unacceptable behaviour by any resident. The impression given on the evidence of Fr. McCafferty alone is that the Bishop is a ghastly abuser! This implicit judgment itself is an abuse. Fr. McCafferty has many unresolved issues with the Bishop which should not have any reference to his alleged intimidating of a nun. Paddy McCafferty ought to have reported any suspicion or evidence of abuse by Bishop Walsh to the authorities if he witnessed such. There’ll be lots of CCTV to back up his claims. Aside from Fr. McCafferty’s personal issues, any abuse of an elderly person is reprehensible. But we must remember that many nursing homes have very elderly residents who have varying illnesses in old age, one of which may entail the annoying 8f orher residents because of neurological illnesses. I have witnessed this in nursing homes and the staff are generally aware of such potential incidents. God forbid that any of us should suffer in old age of any debilitating illness where we lose control of our behaviour. To me, many commenters have used Fr. Paddy’s accusation to demolish the old and frail Bishop. I’d be interested if Pat receives any corroborated evidence from McCafferty to substantiate the very serious allegations he makes. Having worked in nursing care centres as a student and as a chaplain over the years, the level of vigilance required by staff to protect residents has to be 100%.

Well done Pat. After I read about this on your blog a few days ago, I thought about the scenario of that nun being tormented by Bishop Walsh’s intrusion into her life. I took the liberty of e-mailing Nazerene Village expressing my concerns for the nun, I don’t know her, however I can imagine how awful I would feel if placed in a similar position, of course…….with no reply from them.

1.38: Queenie, you are going only by the outbursts of Fr. McCafferty. Is he totally reliable? How do we know? Comments are being made suggesting that this nursing home is a dangerous place. All the Nazareth Nursing homes in the country have received the highest praise for their quality, standards and care. They are managed very professionally. I think we need more corroborative evidence re: the behaviour of Bishop Walsh. Of course if the “tormentor” of the good Carmelite Sister was a non cleric, there wouldn’t be a boo from Fr.McCafferty or the rest of us…

Any abuse to an elderly person is unforgiveable, especially if done intentionally and deliberately. I witnessed the pain of elderly parents and relatives being bullied and abused by family members in ministry, which I found very disturbing. I once brought two cases to the attentiin of the local health care centre. I also worked as chaplain to a nursing home in a parish for nine years and often witnessed residents bullying others, due to their illnesses. Staff generally sort matters out in nursing homes..I would be surprised if management at the Nazareth Home would ignore or tolerate any bullying of residents by others. If Paddy McCafferty saw evidence some time ago, did he bring the matter to the attention of the management? His understandable fury against Bishop Walshe has brought him to a volcanic explosion of abuse and accusations against the Bishop. A few days ago the blog was all about Fr. McCafferty and many commenters were very scathing of his attitude to many issues and very unkind to Paddy himself. There was even a suggestion that his present state of unhappiness is because he hasn’t accepted his sexual identity!! Imagine!! Yet, today Paddy is a hero because of his accusation against a Bishop, yet to be validated or proven. I believe the nasty commentary today has nothing to do with the actual abuse of a saintly nun but more as an opportunity to smash Bishop Walshe, in old age, into the ground. This in itself is a horrible abuse. It’s equivalent to what you are condemning in the Bishop, perhaps even crueller and more damaging.

Some Roman Catholic priest worldwide have put many nails in the coffin of Catholicism and priest.

Until such time as the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith releases its findings, the 1991 determination of the Yugoslav Bishops Conference of non constat de supernaturalitate (“It is undetermined at this time if it is of supernatural origin”) still stands, and the Holy See considers this judgment still operative. Traditionally, there have been one of three determinations with regard to apparitions:

Constat de supernaturalitate (Determined to be supernatural) (approved)
Non constat de supernaturalitate (Not determined to be supernatural) (Neither approved or condemned – not determined – neutral)
Constat de non supernaturalitate (Determined not to be supernatural) (condemned)
Until such time as the Holy See commission’s findings are revealed and approved by the pope, the “not determined” ruling remains in effect.
