WHEN GOOD PEOPLE ARE OVELOOKED AND SUFFER INJUSTICE.

OH WAIT, LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT CECILIA PAYNE.

CECILIA PAYNE

“Since her death in 1979, the woman who discovered what the universe is made of has not so much as received a memorial plaque. Her newspaper obituaries do not mention her greatest discovery. […] Every high school student knows that Isaac Newton discovered gravity, that Charles Darwin discovered evolution, and that Albert Einstein discovered the relativity of time. But when it comes to the composition of our universe, the textbooks simply say that the most abundant atom in the universe is hydrogen. And no one ever wonders how we know.”

Cecilia Payne’s mother refused to spend money on her college education, so she won a scholarship to Cambridge.
Cecilia Payne completed her studies, but Cambridge wouldn’t give her a degree because at that time there’s not much exposure for woman, so she said to heck with that and moved to the United States to work at Harvard.
Cecilia Payne was the first person ever to earn a Ph.D. in astronomy from Radcliffe College, with what Otto Strauve called “the most brilliant Ph.D. thesis ever written in astronomy.”
Not only did Cecilia Payne discover what the universe is made of, she also discovered what the sun is made of (Henry Norris Russell, a fellow astronomer, is usually given credit for discovering that the sun’s composition is different from the Earth’s, but he came to his conclusions four years later than Payne—after telling her not to publish).
Cecilia Payne is the reason we know basically anything about variable stars (stars whose brightness as seen from earth fluctuates). Literally, every other study on variable stars is based on her work.
Cecilia Payne was the first woman to be promoted to full professor from within Harvard, and is often credited with breaking the glass ceiling for women in the Harvard science department and in astronomy, as well as inspiring entire generations of women to take up science.

PAT SAYS

When I accidentally came across this piece in the last few days, I was both SAD and ANGRY.

I hate people being done an injustice of any kind, but especially by the establishment.

In Celilia’s case, she suffered and continues to suffer, an injustice by the scientific and academic establishments.

This blog concentrates mainly on the myriad of injustices perpetrated on people by the RCC establishment and its functionaries.

The victims of the RCC include children, women, youths, seminarians, orphans, nuns, native people, the elderly ………..

You are missing the point! This piece is not abut her religion, although many might give her discoveries a religious connotation.
The article is simply pointing out, even though her brilliant mind and, her groundbreaking revelation, as a woman she has not being given the accolade which a man in her position would undoubtedly would have received.
She was also the first woman Professor to teach in Harvard, surely a grass ceiling achievement.
Yes! There is a connection with the Roman Catholic church, which is, women are almost completely disregarded by the hierarchy of the Roman Catholic church, irrespective of, their knowledge, skills, or academic achievements, some highly educated women working as domestics for Roman Catholic bishops, it is misogyny which would not be tolerated in the secular world.

Which begs the question, would women who desire to become priest(ess) be more of the same, or would they bring a completely new dimension to the priesthood? My gut feeling is, that status quo would continue to be the order of the day, especially if the hierarchy at the Vatican continue to be all men.
What are the qualities that draws male or female towards becoming a priest? I am sure it isn’t always a religious one or, even a desire to serve.
So what is the attraction, elevated position, free housing, mixing with the homosexual men, and women, sex on tap, a salary (be it meagre still could make a pile though indulgences, which is till alive and thriving,) not to much work/easy life, provision for old age, dictator, (no one every stands up during the homily, to contradict or,put their rational point forward, what a stupid situation!)

Sabbatical means one thing in the dictionary and the rest of the world and another thing in the RCC.
In the real world a sabbatical means a paid period of time off usually after serving in a place like a university for a set number of years.
In the Roman Catholic Church it can mean anything:
1. In hiding after making a woman pregnant.
2. Lying low after the church discovered you fathered a child.
3. A break in between parishes after some money has gone missing.
4. And more regularly these days, time off after being outed for being actively gay; waving your willie at young men on the Internet; discovered attending a gay sauna; found having sex on an altar with a seminarian, etc; etc.
Its very hard to know what sabbatical means in the RCC.
Fr John Paul Lyttle went on sabbatical after:
1. Inviting a young police man for dinner and 3 bottles of wine at his parish in Reading.
2. Asking the police man to stay over telling him the PP was away.
3. Telling the police man that he himself is ” always horny, wanks and watches gay porn”.
4. The young policeman, who was contemplating a vocation, was shocked and reported the incident to the diocese.
The diocese and its bishop, Egan, then sent him to live in another parish and said he was doing “research”.
The people copped on to where he was and then he left there.

Sabbatical generally means they are being hidden away by their hierarchy and colleagues because the caca has already hit the fan, is about to hit the fan or they are enlisted to work on damage limitation exercises elsewhere in relation to caca generated by clerical or other high ranking lay colleagues in the Roman Catholic Church.

I went on ‘sabbatical’ of my own accord for no sinister reason other than I was tired and unwell, and after 3 months extended it to 6 months and then to 12 months. All paid for by me and family. From the fringes I looked back at the last 35 years, and thought what a load of old tosh I had been upholding, and how untrue to myself I had been. I simply did not believe a huge amount of what I was being expected / required to uphold, even by simply being a priest. So, I just didn’t go back. The bishop and VG have given up calling now. I continue to see more clearly through the fog and mist of Catholicism, clericalism, and lots of other things, and things are beginning to look clearer for me. I’m going to carry on searching for new things, and leave all that Catholic stuff behind for the most part, perhaps except those things that simply come from being human and trying to love and do good – essentially the Beatitudes. What liberation !
