“As part of the Palestrina Choir 120 celebrations, what a wonderful mini-tour to Cork City, Cobh and Mount Melleray Abbey.

One very special and key aspect to this trip was that the choir was staying and singing at Mount Melleray, the Cistercian Monastery in County Waterford. The Boys and Gentlemen of the choir were made so welcome and were wonderfully hosted by Fr Richard, Br Seamus and Fr Denis Luke. They had the great honour of joining with the monks in singing at Compline and of being able to sing at Mass on Sunday morning conducted by Pierce. Fr Richard, a musician himself, was able to explain and introduce the boys to the office of Compline.”

I was shocked to see the Palestrina Choir from Dublin’s Pro Cathedral not only visit Mount Melleray but actually stay over!

The former Abbot, Richard Purcell, pictured with the boys, was forced to resign after featuring on this blog as homosexually active.

Catholic Church denies responsibility for priest, saying he was employed as a teacher at time of alleged abuse

Dave Cullen has launched a multimillion-dollar lawsuit against the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Toronto. Cullen claims says he was sexually abused starting at age five by a Roman Catholic priest named Father James Sheridan, who died in 1987.

It was the late 1960s in Toronto and a young boy was standing on the edge of a subway platform considering something terrible. The torment he says he felt was becoming unbearable.

David Cullen, who was around 10 years old at the time, says he managed to find a nearby payphone to call his mother for help. He went on to spend much of the rest of his life in and out of doctors’ offices and hospitals, dealing with chronic pain and severe emotional distress.

11:23 Apologies if you were asking about his motivation (obviously I don’t know that) and already know this. Benedictines and Cistercians have a thing called stability which fixes you in one monastery. When you’re elected abbot of a monastery not your own, your stability automatically transfers.
That said, for resigned abbots there’s a custom of them spending at least some time out of the monastery to allow your successor to get his feet under the table. The fact he’s still in a prominent role suggests the regime hasn’t really changed at Mt Melleray.

There is a dangerous and misleading thought in your post today, Pat. It is that homosexual men should not be near children, especially boys. As you know well, there is no link whatsoever between homosexuality and paedophilia. It sounds as if Richard Purcell did a good job, teaching the choir about aspects of singing they had not encountered. It is extremely unlikely that any of the visitors would have known about Purcell’s past. I am not someone who gives clergy the benefit of the doubt but, on this occasion, I think kindness and thanks should be the major theme of any report about the choir’s visit.

DEFROCKED Irish paedophile priest Oliver O’Grady has been living in the Netherlands where he acted as a church deacon assisting mass and helped out at a shelter for vulnerable women and their children, the Sunday Tribune has discovered.
The photograph published in Sunday Trubune shows Fr O’Grady, a serial abuser who has served seven years in a US prison for his crimes, watching over a christening at a Rotterdam church where he used his middle name, Francis.
The expatriate community attending the Church of the Holy Heart, Christ Our Redeemer, had no knowledge of the past of the man who called himself “Brother Francis”. He also volunteered at a homeless shelter and worked at a fast-food restaurant in Rotterdam where he helped organise children’s parties.
In 2010, Fr/Br O’Grady, whose crimes include the sexual abuse of over 20 boys and girls, including a nine-month-old baby, recently returned to Ireland and is living in a hostel in Dublin city centre.
In an email to one of the Rotterdam parishioners on 30 March 2010, he referred to himself as “Brother Francis”, implying that he is affiliated with a religious order.
He worked at the Rotterdam restaurant, part of a global chain, until the end of 2009 and was a regular host of birthday parties there. Prior to this he worked as a telemarketer.
Fr/Br Oliver O’Grady is regarded as one the world’s most dangerous clerical sex abusers. He has admitted in depositions to the rape, molestation and abuse of over 20 children from 1973 onwards. He was sent to the US after his ordination in 1971 and never served as a priest in Ireland. The 64-year-old was deported to Ireland in 2000 after serving half his 14-year sentence in prison in California for sexually abusing two brothers.
He was defrocked after his conviction and gained notoriety when he agreed to feature in a critically acclaimed documentary discussing his sexual abuse of children. In Deliver Us From Evil, released in 2006, O’Grady tells how he preyed on children and how he was moved from parish to parish by church authorities.
The documentary, which has been broadcast around the world, was aired on national television in Holland two weeks ago. Several parishioners at the Church of the Holy Heart, Christ our Redeemer, recognised him. He had been volunteering at a weekly English language religious service at the church, to facilitate expatriates.
Parishioners told the Sunday Tribune he was acting as a church deacon, helping the priest with the sacraments and organising the choir singing. On one occasion, when the priest was late, the defrocked cleric celebrated the mass until he arrived.
Fr Avin Kunnekkadan, one of the rotating priests at the church, said he was unaware of O’Grady’s criminal past.
“I did not know about his background. I did not know about his past at all,” he said this weekend. An announcement was made at the church last week informing the congregation about O’Grady’s criminal past.
O’Grady also volunteered at the Missionaries of Charity in Rotterdam.
The religious order runs a homeless shelter and there is a refuge for vulnerable mothers and their children at the premises. No one at the charity was available for comment this weekend.
Last week, O’Grady was served with a civil action at his Dublin hostel by Californian attorneys Manly, McGuire & Stewart.
The firm specialises in clerical sex abuse cases and represents several of O’Grady’s victims who are taking civil actions against him.
Fr Tom Doyle, a Dominican priest from Virginia in the US who has met some of O’Grady’s victims, said O’Grady should never have been permitted to volunteer at the church in Rotterdam and that background checks should have been carried out.
The priest said he believed O’Grady should be institutionalised.
“It’s a concern that he was able to help out at the church. The problem with O’Grady is that he’s a highly compulsive sex offender and no matter where he is, he’s a danger to children. There is no effective way to monitor him other than to make sure he is not in the presence of children.”

He later served at Church of the Presentation in Stockton, California, Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Turlock, California, St. Andrew’s Parish in San Andreas, California, and St Anthony’s Catholic Church in Hughson, California.[3] He claimed to have been himself molested by a priest at the age of 10, and that he was involved in sexual abuse in his own family, both as perpetrator and victim.[4]

Better known as Willie Doyle, was an Irish Roman Catholic priest who was killed in action while serving as a military chaplain to the Royal Dublin Fusiliers during the First World War.
Doyle is a candidate for sainthood in the Roman Catholic Church.

I’m a Religious who had the real honour to ‘pray a blessing’ when my brother and his partner got married. I place it in inverted commas because I wasn’t allowed to mention God. But, with the blessing of my Pastor General (I worked for him at the time in Rome) I had free reign to push the boundary as far as possible. The humanist celebrant was very obliging and really left space for what everyone in the congregation knew was a sermon and kind of nuptial blessing (although I’m not a priest so it wasn’t a formal one).
I had been my brother’s youth worker growing up. I saw his pain as he on the one hand experienced the all embracing love of God, and in the other the judgement of what you very accurately describe as Cathbot criticism. To be able to reaffirm God’s unconditional love, witnessed to in their marriage, has been one of the most privileged acts of faith the Lord has graced me with the opportunity to share.

Will Irish parents ever learn? There is still a huge denial regarding paedophilia in the Roman Catholic church clergy, it’s still there.
If it takes 20 -40 years before a sexually abused victim finds the strength to be able to acknowledge their sexual abuse, God alone knows how many Roman Catholic children are still being sexually abuse presently.
Although it has to be pointed out, homosexual does not equate with paedophile some go so far as to say, paedophiles and homosexuals – is apples and oranges.
More likely ephebophilia which is a preferential sexual interest in adolescent individuals (usually mid-late teens).

I am so angry looking at that photo of Richard Purcell. The arrogant, brass-necked cheek of him. I am so glad that these Irish Cistercian monasteries are kaput, and are just nursing homes now and will close within a decade. They deserve to close if buckaroos like Dick Purcell are what they produce, promote and shelter.

Yes, it is the arrogance and brass neck of the likes of Purcell, as if butter would not melt in his mouth, that gets me too ! Has the man no shame. After all we know about him he needs to keep a low profile and live a life of quiet prayer and penance. If he has, as he seems to be saying by his reappearance in the monastery, repented and renewed himself. I suspect that is not the case and he is just arrogantly brazening it out and giving us all the two fingers. I guess with protectors like + Phonsie he thinks that he is teflon coated. I wonder…. ?!

@4:31 above re Father David Marsden, ex Oscott (and ex a few other places that he was “let go” from !): This man is dangerous to the psychological and emotional well being and formation of seminarians. He comes out of a school of psychology and formation where there is an obsession with the psycho-sexual thoughts and actions of men, including masturbation and sexual fantasies. He is not at all reluctant to intrude in to the innermost and most private thoughts of individuals, all in the name of having a concern about their suitability for vocation and ordination. It speaks volumes that this man has been let go not just by Oscott, but by various other seminaries and institutes. He may wish to hit back by a tell all account of tittle tattle, but the reality is that he was judged by the people who were employing him more than once to be a danger to and unsuitable for the well-being of the men he was supposed to be forming. Bear that in mind whenever you read any of his ‘exposes’.

Anyone who was “let go” by sordid seminaries such as Maynooth and Oscott is in the right, in my book. It’s a badge of honour to be dismissed from those parodies of a seminary.

In addition to their ignoring the vital needs of school children and local residents, Clare County Council is also being publicly denounced as continuing its dictatorship regime into other detrimental future disasters for us in Ennis town. Ennis traders have also had enough, see public protest signs on our streets. We have all collectively had our fill of both the church and it’s external fat cat consultants who don’t live in the real world. No cost of living crisis for them.

10.34: Out since today. All carried out very professionally. Most guys are happy. It’s a difficult time to be changed as we are now appointed into a PARTNERSHIP OF PARISHES which throws up lots of intrigue but also a huge amount of extrr a work for Adm’s, Moderators and P.P.’s…think the appointments have been accepted well overall. Now, we’ll be in our new appointments mid July which is a preferable time than Mid Sept. At least Archbishop Farrell listened in this instance. Let us get on with our ministry and mission. God be with all who are being changed.
