CARDINAL MARX ON SAME SEX MARRIAGE.

In new interview, Cardinal Marx speaks on same-sex blessings

Catholic News Agency 24 December, 2019

Cardinal Reinhard Marx at the German Bishops’ Press Conference at the Pontifical Teutonic College on October 5, 2015 (Bohumil Petrik/CNA)

‘I can bless them both in the sense of pastoral accompaniment, we can pray together. But theirs cannot be a marriage-like relationship.’

Cardinal Reinhard Marx has expressed the view that homosexual couples can receive a Church blessing “in the sense of a pastoral accompaniment” in the Catholic Church, but not in a manner that resembles marriage.

In an interview with the German magazine Stern, the Archbishop of Munich and Freising was asked, “What do you do when a homosexual couple asks you for an episcopal blessing?”

Marx responded: “I can bless them both in the sense of pastoral accompaniment, we can pray together. But theirs cannot be a marriage-like relationship.”

While there is room for differing interpretations of Marx’s comments, the website “katholisch.de,” funded by the German bishops, has reported on the matter using the headline “Marx: Homosexual couples can receive a blessing.”

After that report was published, Matthias Kopp, press director for the German bishops’ conference, told CNA that the conference has nothing to add to the published interview.

CNA asked the Archdiocese of Munich to clarify the cardinal’s remarks, and whether the blessing of homosexual couples is practiced in the diocese. The archdiocese has not yet responded.
In the magazine interview, Marx also said that he told the [Vatican] Synod on the Family in 2015 that homosexual couples, who are faithful to each other and support each other, should not be “negatively bracketed” by the Church or told by the Church that stable homosexual relationships are considered worthless.

At the same, Marx affirmed in the interview with Stern that a homosexual union “is not a marriage” in the Catholic sense of the word, and that the sacrament of marriage is between a man and a woman.

Marx also commented on the question of women’s ordination.

Asked about the sacramental ordination of women, Marx, who is referred to as “the most powerful Catholic in Germany” by the magazine, said that Pope Francis has told him that “the door is closed,” given Pope St. John Paul II’s statement of 1994. Nonetheless, the German prelate claimed that debate on the issue is “not over.”

The interview is not the first time Cardinal Marx has spoken on Catholic blessings of homosexual couples.
In a February 2018 interview with the Bavarian State Broadcasting Company, Marx agreed that a blessing is possible, however qualifying there could be “no set of rules” on the question – rather, the decision would be that of “a priest or pastoral worker.”

After CNA reported that, the German bishops’ conference requested a “correction” of CNA’s translation.
More recently, Archbishop Heiner Koch of Berlin, following consultations in early December, stated that both hetero- and homosexuality are “normal forms of sexual predisposition, which cannot or should be be changed with the help of a specific socialization.”

Koch, who attended the Vatican Synod on the Family together with Marx and is Chairman of the Marriage and Family Commission of the German bishops’ conference, spoke after the German bishops asserted they were committed to “newly assessing” the universal Church’s teaching on homosexuality – and sexual morality in general – ahead of a two-year “synodal process.”

WHEN MARRIAGE BETWEEN GAYS WAS RITE

The Irish Times.

A KIEV art museum contains a curious icon from St Catherine’s monastery on Mount Sinai. It shows two robed Christian saints. Between them is a traditional Roman pronubus (best man) overseeing what in a standard Roman icon would be the wedding of a husband and wife. In the icon, Christ is the pronubus. Only one thing is unusual. The “husband and wife” are in fact two men.

Is the icon suggesting that a homosexual “marriage” is one sanctified by Christ?

The very idea initially seems shocking. The full answer comes from other sources about the two men featured, St Serge and St Bacchus, two Roman soldiers who became Christian martyrs.

While the pairing of saints, particularly in the early Church, was not unusual, the association of these two men was regarded as particularly close. Severus of Antioch in the sixth century explained that “we should not separate in speech [Serge and Bacchus] who were joined in life”. More bluntly, in the definitive 10th century Greek account of their lives, St Serge is openly described as the “sweet companion and lover” of St Bacchus.

In other words, it confirms what the earlier icon implies, that they were a homosexual couple. Unusually their orientation and relationship was openly accepted by early Christian writers. Furthermore, in an image that to some modern Christian eyes might border on blasphemy, the icon has Christ himself as their pronubus, their best man overseeing their “marriage”.

The very idea of a Christian homosexual marriage seems incredible. Yet after a 12-year search of Catholic and Orthodox church archives Yale history professor John Boswell has discovered that a type of Christian homosexual “marriage” did exist as late as the 18th century.

Contrary to myth, Christianity’s concept of marriage has not been set in stone since the days of Christ, but has evolved both as a concept and as a ritual. Prof Boswell discovered that in addition to heterosexual marriage ceremonies in ancient church liturgical documents (and clearly separate from other types of non-marital blessings such as blessings of adopted children or land) were ceremonies called, among other titles, the “Office of Same Sex Union” (10th and 11th century Greek) or the “Order for Uniting Two Men” (11th and 12th century).

These ceremonies had all the contemporary symbols of a marriage: a community gathered in church, a blessing of the couple before the altar, their right hands joined as at heterosexual marriages, the participation of a priest, the taking of the Eucharist, a wedding banquet afterwards. All of which are shown in contemporary drawings of the same sex union of Byzantine Emperor Basil I (867-886) and his companion John. Such homosexual unions also took place in Ireland in the late 12th/early 13th century, as the chronicler Gerald of Wales (Geraldus Cambrensis) has recorded.

Boswell’s book, The Marriage of Likeness: Same Sex Unions in Pre- Modern Europe, lists in detail some same sex union ceremonies found in ancient church liturgical documents. One Greek 13th century “Order for Solemnisation of Same Sex Union” having invoked St Serge and St Bacchus, called on God to “vouchsafe unto these thy servants [N and N] grace to love one another and to abide unhated and not a cause of scandal all the days of their lives, with the help of the Holy Mother of God and all thy saints.” The ceremony concludes: “And they shall kiss the Holy Gospel and each other, and it shall be concluded.”

Another 14th century Serbian Slavonic “Office of Same Sex Union”, uniting two men or two women, had the couple having their right hands laid on the Gospel while having a cross placed in their left hands. Having kissed the Gospel, the couple were then required to kiss each other, after which the priest, having raised up the Eucharist, would give them both communion.

Boswell found records of same-sex unions in such diverse archives as those in the Vatican, in St Petersburg, in Paris, Istanbul, and in Sinai, covering a period from the 8th to the 18th centuries. Nor is he the first to make such a discovery. The Dominican Jacques Goar (1601-1653) includes such ceremonies in a printed collection of Greek prayer books.

While homosexuality was technically illegal from late Roman times, it was only from about the 14th century that anti-homosexual feelings swept western Europe. Yet same sex union ceremonies continued to take place.

At St John Lateran in Rome (traditionally the Pope’s parish Church) in 1578 as many as 13 couples were “married” at Mass with the apparent co-operation of the local clergy, “taking Communion together, using the same nuptial Scripture, after which they slept and ate together”, according to a contemporary report.

Another woman-to-woman union is recorded in Dalmatia in the 18th century. Many questionable historical claims about the church have been made by some recent writers in this newspaper.

Boswell’s academic study however is so well researched and sourced as to pose fundamental questions for both modern church leaders and heterosexual Christians about their attitude towards homosexuality.

For the Church to ignore the evidence in its own archives would be a cowardly cop-out. That evidence shows convincingly that what the modern church claims has been its constant unchanging attitude towards homosexuality is in fact nothing of the sort.

It proves that for much of the last two millennia, in parish churches and cathedrals throughout Christendom from Ireland to Istanbul and in the heart of Rome itself, homosexual relationships were accepted as valid expressions of a God-given ability to love and commit to another person, a love that could be celebrated, honoured and blessed both in the name of, and through the Eucharist in the presence of Jesus Christ.

PAT SAYS

The controversy of same sex marriage is a great challenge to the Christian churches.

Some respond to the issue with 5000 year old biblical bigotry. That does not work.

That civil society decides to have civil same sex marriage is not any church’business. It’s a matter for politicians representative of citizens.

But Christians have to accept that there is a precedent for gay couples being blessed in church.

And the Christian church did not take an active interest in any kind of marriage until the 12 th century.

I have been celebrating same sex blessings for 33 years.

I have celebrated a gay marriage last July in the Republic.

I will do so in Northern Ireland when the law changes in January.

I personally have had a Civil Partnership and am content with that.

I do occasionally wonder about there being two “wives” or two “husbands”.

Maybe new realities deserve new terms?

My partner and I introduce each other as “my partner”.

I have never understood why anyone would be against same sex marriage. If two men or two women want to celebrate their relationship together in marriage, fantastic.
I myself would never marry, I am just happy being the way I am, but to anyone who wants to get married, I say good luck to you, and enjoy married life whether you are straight, gay, bi, whatever.
Being lectured on marriage between one man and one woman only by an alleged celibate cardinal is a bit like being told which meats I should be using in my steak and kidney pie by the leader of the Vegan Society.
For a church filled with men and women who have same sex attraction, the roman church is packed full of them it seems, for them to totally shut down the idea of same sex marriage or blessings is frankly hypocrisy of the highest order, but hey ho we have come to expect that from the roman church for many years now.
Well done to the protestant churches who do accept same sex marriage and offer blessings. In Southwark Anglican Cathedral here in London, they bless and perform civil partnership ceremonies with no problem at all. LGBT people are more than welcome to have their marriage blessed there. 2 miles away the Catholic Southwark Cathedral – well it is a polite piss off and stop bothering us approach.

You sail with whichever way the wind blows. It’s not that newsworthy about Marx or any big revelation in what he said. He is a Cardinal and merely stating what the Church teaches – what’s the big deal? Marry as many same sex couples as you like (solely for the money in your case) but the reality is that the majority of these couples do not stay together. Gay people are promiscuous by nature so same sex marriage are doomed to failure. I’d be interested to know how many are happy to have ‘open relationships’ and that’s another subject all together.

Like

Cardinal Marx is a real liberal, and it’s exciting to think he could be a pope. But what he says is now becoming a standard position — sympathy for civil partnerships as long as they’re not called marriage (despite the fact that civil marriage seems to be more and more the only game in town) and offering of blessings for same-sex couples. Actually stable partnerships were recommended as a pastoral accommodation since the 1970s. It’s interesting to see the church subtly changing.

Like

2..59

And it is changing, almost imperceptibly.

Accept that there will no dramatic change, like the recent revocation of teaching on the death penalty: this would mean the Church’s admitting, albeit effectively, that it was as wrong on homosexual love (I am not alluding to ‘acts’ here…sex) as it was about teaching on capital punishment. One whammy at a time for Holy Mother Church: her ego could not withstand the staple two.😆

As for the commentor at 12:28, that is quite a bold statement by you, that gay people are not just promiscuous, but promiscuous ‘by nature’. May I avail of your obvious learning by asking for biological, psychological, and sociological evidence for the statement? I know that when I was in my teens, I couldn’t get my leg over often enough with females. Was I promiscuous by nature then? Rather than just personally?

Like

Thanks for answering.

The question has always intrigued me… well, since a gay man once told me, with weary disgust, that gays are interested only in sex, not in relationship.

I thought he was speaking more from disillusionment than from reality.

I believe that EVERY person (there may be exceptions) yearns for love and intimacy; this contradicts the view that being gay naturally means being promiscuous. Your post confirms this: you yearn for someone to settle down with. For monogamy, in another word.

So why are, apparently, many gay men sex-obsessed? I think the answer is both historical and psychological. You said there is a sub-culture among gays, of sexual promiscuity, and I believe that this was the inevitable psycho-social outcome of centuries of moral denunciation and oppression, largely by straights, but also by severely self-loathing and self-repressed gays.

If you treat someone like a dog, don’t complain when he begins to act like one.

The Church cannot ignore its SACRED Teachings nor can it change traditions simply to catch up with modern evolutions in lifestyles and thinking. However, I am no longer convinced about the many tenets of Church teaching which are a barrier to full inclusivity in our churches. I know many wonderfully committed, gay people who I believe should be welcome without doubt into the Christian community. To do so is not to compromise SACRED Teachings but an acknowledgement that society’s norms and values are constantly evolving and the Church must embrace with open arms all who want to feel welcomed, irrespective of their sexual identity or marital status. Obviously the extremes of the gay sub culture would present challenges. If any person wants to be part of God’s family, surely the Church must be generous in welcoming all. We all need to be reminded of the ideals of the Gospel and seek to live by them. The time has arrived when the Church must rethink its moral teachings on sexuality and the attendant issues and challenges it presents.

It isn’t about the Church’s so-called ‘sacred’ teachings; only Christ’s teachings are truly sacred. And the Roman Strumpet has, for centuries, been teaching against the more fundamental of these, namely, love of enemy.

Why do you think The Strumpet revoked, earlier this year, its pro-death penalty stance? It had been teaching in very grave error, for a very long time. How many souls are in Hell because of this vile heresy?

And, as we have learned from the past, there is ALWAYS another side to the coin. And it won’t be pretty. I reckon there is already somebody out there with some story about them. I reckon it’s only a matter of time.

I would say that I’m pretty progressive and liberal on many of the issues that get aired on this blog. I would advocate the ending of compulsory celibacy, the ordination of women, and support for issues of equality and diversity and respect. Perhaps the only issue that I tend to be a little rigorous about is abortion, which I see as always a moral negative, although I recognise that in some circumstances abortion may be the lesser of two evils.
On the issue of same sex marriage, whilst I can’t summon up much deeply theological thinking about the matter, I tend to think “why” ? Why do same sex people want to get married ? Let me unpick that a bit. I absolutely recognise that same sex couples may want, and should be entitled, to express their love for each other in relationship, and to live openly and freely in society. I welcome various mechanisms that have been adopted to ensure that their relationships are recognised and protected, for example civil partnerships (which I note in the New Year are to be extended to male and female / opposite sex couples, at least in GB, perhaps not in NI as of yet ?). The question I have is, what is the enthusiasm for same sex marriage is all about ? For me, marriage is not only about the couple concerned, but also about the space in which the next generation is nurtured and formed. And so, I am prepared to reserve that place of marriage for people who create children, almost exclusively opposite sex couples, men and women. I know that same sex couples sometimes have children, often having to go through all sorts of hoops in order to do so, but I do not think that those exceptions should take precedence over the general principle of marriage and what it is for. There are sufficient protections and equalities for same sex relationships families to flourish.
An argument that is often used for same sex marriage is equality. It is seen as a mechanism for ensuring that same sex relationships are seen as equal. I think that is a misuse of marriage for the purpose of equality. There are already many ways in which same sex relationships are valued, protected and seen as having an equality to marriage. It just doesn’t have to be marriage. There are many aspects of life when I know that I am not able to be exactly equal in every sense to everybody else. For example, I am not a women and therefore I cannot give birth to a child. There is no point in me desiring to do so just to be equal. It is simply not possible. The point I make is that even though we may wish to be equal in all respects, sometimes it is simply not possible. For me the issues of equality in respect of same sex marriage is not valid. There are many ways in which same sex relationships are valued and protected and given an equal status.
The Church is perfectly entitled to reserve the sacrament of marriage for opposite sex couples who wish to undertake the sacrament of marriage, if that is their wish. I have no problem with that. That is Christian sacramental marriage I note increasingly a willingness on the part of the Church to talk more positively and respectfully of other kinds of relationships that perhaps are not Christian marriage, such as same sex relationships, and as Cardinal Marx is touching on in today’s theme, to be willing to give some kind of credence and acceptance to these relationships, perhaps by welcome and blessing. That makes sense and is pastorally sensitive and to be welcomed. We will see more of that, I think.

The honours system of the British Crown is totally laughable, nonsensical and utter trash. When you have knighted people like Jimmy Saville then it shows what a corrupt system it is and recently we have seen how some members of the British Crown family are corrupt. Yesterday they knighted Ian Duncan Smith the Tory who laughed in Parliament when they announced his severe welfare cuts – how perverse is that. Then we have the priest entertainers now awarded gongs too. At least John Lennon had the balls to hand his back in protest over Britain’s foreign policy. Priests accepting awards from a British Monarchy that at one time wanted them hunted down and murdered is quite ironic. If they had any integrity they should refuse them. After all the comedian John Cleese refused his saying “well, what are they for”?

But, you will admit, while your general point is valid, the turpitude emanating from those MC people is offensive screed after offensive screed.
My summing up of what they write is that it is an ASD (attention-seeking device). They require exaggerated language in order to elicit a response, on the grounds that a critical reaction is better than no reaction. An no reaction is what they would receive otherwise.

He’s a nuanced character, is ‘oor’ Cardinal Marx. On the one hand, at pains to toe the traditional Church line on homosexual unions (that they cannot be sacramental marriages); but on the other hand, speaking publicly, again, about blessing these unions. It’s as if…as if he’s doing another kind of, er, ‘toeing’, that is, sticking a toe in the water to test its temperature: to determine the level of hostility in the Church to his ideas this time round, along with whether he can stick more than a toe in the water next time. And there will be a next time. I think Cardinal Marx is trying to set an agenda, for a near future. On the shoulders of giants…
As for Serge and Bacchus, ring any (fairly) modern bells? Newman and St. John? A couple by any other name. Yes?

The Priests MBE are really West Brits, fawning after the British establishment. The sort of priests in NI who fraternise with the Army officers in the Officers’ Mess. I doubt if they would be keen on belonging to a unified Ireland. Too many nice things on offer from the British. They really should have declined the gongs. I’m sure most of their people will be a bit bemused by the whole thing. Mind you, they probably have come to expect all kinds of strange behaviours from their singing priests ! All that pious twee shite about using the blessings that God has given them to bring joy to others ! More like a good opportunity to swan off and see the world and be in the limelight, I think. A trio of not sufficiently manly and robust mummies’ boys. Gives the rest of us a bad name.

Will the Singing Priests get their MBEs as British citizens in Buck House from Brenda, Chuck or William, or as Irish citizens from the British Ambassador in Dublin?
Either way it’s a bit off for priests to receive honours from a monarchy which says that Catholics uniquely cannot be in the line of succession, and even if Anglican members of the Royal family marry a Catholic, the Anglican loses their place. What could be more sectarian than that?

Are you ‘Dumb’, or his alter-ego, ‘Dumber’.
Why can’t Protestants, Hindus, Muslims, Buddhists, etc become pope? Isn’t it sectarian that they can’t? Or just common sense, cos they aren’t Catholic?
A Catholic cannot become head of the Church of England, you berk. And cannot, therefore, succeed to the throne.

MCarta’s logic is flawed and lacks foresight.

It’s not essential that the bishop of Rome be the Sovereign of the Vatican. The latter could be reabsorbed into Italy with a minimum of administrative adjustment.

On the other hand, it’s not necessary for the British monarch to be supreme governor of the CofE. The former could be abolished with the stroke of a pen and its functions integrated into the diocesan network.

MC, you’re as thick as champ. Jews, Hindus, Muslims, athiests, Jedis could all marry in without changing the line of succession and jug ears could join any faith whatsoever or just renounce Anglicanism and still be king and head of the “Church of England”. Just not be a Catholic. And is the UK a theocracy (though perhaps it is, as only Iran, the Vatican and the UK have clergy in their legislatures as of right.

I deal in reality, not fantasy. And the reality is that Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II IS head of the Church of England. Which, LOGICALLY, means that no Roman Catholic may currently accede to the throne.
So far from being flawed, my logic is as accurate as….well, as a guided missile, actually. 😆

What MCs mean at 10:29, is that hypothetical thought is beyond them. No apodosis will follow their protasis.

The Priests probably think it’s a great ecumenical gesture to accept the MBE. Many blog readers may be unaware that Eugene has a desk job, and Martin and David are in black Protestant parishes with few Catholics , so that they have light duties and can devote more time to the concerts and recording. Their many unionist neighbours will be delighted to see them tugging the forelock to the Queen of England.

Excellent comment at 1:06pm. So true! However, Aghadrumsee is not a parish……simply a wee area in the parish of Clones. Also, what’s implied by the awarding of a gong to Fr. Garrett Campbell for services to married men?

Fingers are sore today having to scroll past the many MC posts as per usual today, Buckleys spokesman and pet.

Singing priests and Dana? The main thing wrong with this picture is that it’s totally tasteless and naff.

I very much hope, Bp Pat, you will devote an entire day’s blog to the Singing Priests on their very special day when they receive their insignias from The Queen, or a Member of the Royal Family in recognition of their outstanding achievements, personal bravery and services to the UK and other realms and British Overseas Territories. I look forward to it.

Congratulations anyway Magna. Keep up the good work.

I am back and not dead despite reports to the contrary. I’m an active member of the Clergy in Scotland and I am determined to out double standards, Clergy leading a double life, those who don’t give a shit about the Church and those who sponge off the laity. I’ve not been too well, but glad to say I’m back with a vengeance. God bless you all.
