CORONAVIRUS SCARE HAS BOUGHT THE VATICAN SOME TIME….HOW WILL THEY USE IT?

John L. Allen Jr. Crux Now

Pope Francis holds his general audience at the Vatican, Wednesday, March 11, 2020. Pope Francis held his weekly general audience in the privacy of his library as the Vatican implemented Italy’s drastic coronavirus lockdown measures, barring the general public from St. Peter’s Square and taking precautions to limit the spread of infections in the tiny city state. For most people, the new coronavirus causes only mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough. For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia. (Credit: Vatican News via AP.)

ROME – Despite his pessimism, Schopenhauer nevertheless was a pretty sharp cookie. Among his other contributions to Western thought and language, he apparently coined the phrase “buying time.” The relevant line from his 1851 Counsels and Maxims is, “To buy books would be a good thing if we also could buy the time to read them.”

Since then, “buying time” has become the preferred expression whenever a looming deadline or expiration date is extended, either by cunning or happenstance, granting a temporary reprieve to whoever’s under the gun.

In a nutshell, that’s the situation for Pope Francis and his Vatican team today: Facing a ticking clock on several fronts, the coronavirus has bought them some time. The question is how they’ll use it.

Here are at least five fronts where the question is especially urgent.

Holy Week

Severe restrictions imposed by the Italian government to combat the spread of the coronavirus originally were set to last until Friday, April 3, which is two days before Palm Sunday. Among other things, all public Masses in Italy have been suspended. (In case you’re wondering, the timing wasn’t coincidental. Despite it all, Italians still take Holy Week seriously.)

However, officials in China’s Wuhan province announced only Tuesday that they would begin lifting their own controls, a full 50 days after imposing them, because that’s how long it took for the infection rate to drop to a point where it was considered safe. If a similar arc unfolds here, it would push well beyond the April 12 date of Easter, meaning the Vatican and bishops in areas potentially facing similar measures need to be planning now for a Holy Week under lockdown.

For one thing, it would lend added importance to TV broadcasts of Pope Francis’s Holy Week liturgies – which almost certainly will still happen, though without crowds – because a good swath of the Catholic population in Italy and other affected areas may not otherwise have access to Mass and the sacraments. Ironically, the situation could produce the best ratings and online traffic numbers the Holy Week liturgies have ever drawn, which is all the more reason to take them seriously.

Mexico

Four days ago, the Mexican bishops’ conference announced that a visit planned for March 20-27 by Maltese Archbishop Charles Scicluna, Assistant Secretary of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith and Pope Francis’s point man on the clerical abuse crisis, and Spanish Monsignor Jordi Bertomeu, had been postponed to an indefinite future date because of the coronavirus scare.

Scicluna and Bertomeu, who ran an investigation of abuse cases in Chile that led to an en masse offer to resign by all of Chile’s bishops, were headed to Mexico because of a perception that it would be the next bomb to go off in the Church’s scandals. Mexico was already the epicenter of a crisis surrounding the late Father Marcial Maciel Degollado and his Legion of Christ, and the pope’s ambassador in the country said in announcing the investigation that at least four Mexican bishops have been accused of abuse cover-ups.

Right now nobody’s beating down the Vatican’s door to find out how it plans to handle the Mexican situation – in part, because restrictions on entry to St. Peter’s Square these days mean that most people can’t even reach the door. Sooner or later, however, the question will arise again.

The McCarrick Report

Speaking of things no one’s asking about right now, the Vatican still hasn’t issued its long-awaited report on who knew what, and when, about abuse and misconduct charges against ex-cardinal and ex-priest Theodore McCarrick.

Before the coronavirus broke out, Vatican officials on background were telling reporters and others that the report is basically ready, that it’s being readied for translation and distribution, and that it should appear soon. Observers around the world, and especially in the United States, have pointed to the report as a crucial test of the Vatican’s commitment to transparency.

In a similar fashion, whether there are consequences for officials named in the report as having contributed to McCarrick’s long run in power despite concerns about possible abuse and misconduct is also seen as a test of accountability, something Pope Francis has extolled as key to a serious reform.

Given how much is at stake, this is probably a good time to be trying to make the report as bullet-proof as possible … because whenever it does finally appear, it’s likely the big guns will be out.

Vatican Reform

Another document expected to come out soon before the coronavirus put things on hold was Praedicate Evangelium, the working title of Pope Francis’s new apostolic constitution on the Roman Curia. It’s designed to institutionalize, and give legal shape, to his much-ballyhooed reform of the Vatican.

The stakes were already high, given perceptions in many quarters that at least to date, the reform has been more verbal than real. They became even higher over the past weekend, when the Vatican first announced the creation of a new HR office as a “step of great importance” in reform, and then, just over 24 hours later, made a second announcement indicating that the office is just an idea, not a fait accompli, and the pope will decide in his own good time.

The about-face left many insiders scratching their heads, wondering who’s running this railroad. It hasn’t had much of an external echo so far because of the distraction of the coronavirus, but that won’t last forever.

Moneyval

Prior to the coronavirus crisis, Moneyval, the Council of Europe’s anti-money laundering agency, was set to conduct its next evaluation of the Vatican towards the end of April.

The smart bet seemed to be it wouldn’t go especially well, following a recent scandal over a more than $200 million land deal in London carried out by the Secretariat of State, which, among other things, triggered the departure last November of the Vatican figure most respected in the international regulatory community, Swiss lawyer René Brülhart.

Should Moneyval conclude that the Vatican is backtracking on reform, it could inscribe the Vatican on “blacklists” of suspect actors, which could freeze it out of international markets or significantly inflate its transaction costs.

Almost certainly, the Moneyval evaluation will be delayed – but “delayed” is not the same thing as “canceled,” and eventually the Vatican will have to answer the questions its inspectors are almost certain to ask.
Now, therefore, would be a great time to figure out what those answers might be.

PAT SAYS

The sad fact is that the Vatican will is any and every excuse to become transparent.

The Vatican and the RCC are totally lost causes.

Even if Jesus Christ himself appeared to the pope and cardinals and asked for transparency they would still refuse.

In fact, if they could, they would crucify him all over again I’m St. Peter’s Square.

The Pharisees of 2000 years ago have been replaced today by the hierarchy of the RCC.

THE ORATORY HAS CANCELLED ALL MASSES.

I have decided to cancel all Masses atThe Oratory for the foreseeable future.

As the Coronavirus crisis gets worse we all need to do everything we can to protect others and ourselves.

Pat, I wish you well in these changing times. Csncelking the Oratory masses is wise. I’ve also cancelled all masses as we normally have 1750 for 5 weekend masses and 200 for our 3 daily Lenten Masses. All cancelled. Our church will remain open every day with Adoration of Blessed Sacrament and prayer. Funerals obviously will go ahead under the HSE guidelines. I hope we all pray earnestly and be caring towards the most needy and vulnerable. Tgere had a palpable sense of panic and anxiety, so supporting one another through prayer and charity is essential.

Like

Supporting one another by telling people to get a bloody grip of themselves would be far more effective, but I suppose such practicalities wouldn’t occur to a superstitious mind like yours.
But then again, perhaps it already did, priest. However, you’re enjoying the attention you’re getting from people now, aren’t you? Not the usual attention your kiddie-fiddling crowd gets, but the Oh, Father! Help me! Pray for me! Oh, Faaaaaather! That kind of attention, priest. Feels good, doesn’t it? And the Mass so-called ‘offerings’ (in reality, ‘payments for God’s freely given grace’): these are the proverbial icing, aren’t they, priest? And I’d bet your plump, sweaty palm is being crossed with an abundance of currency these days: Offer a Mass, for me, Father. Offer a Mass! It all makes you feel very important, doesn’t it priest? A very pleasant respite from the way in which you kiddie-fiddling parasites are now usually, and rightly, regarded.
Why, priest, are people panicking? Yes, I know about the hype surrounding Co-vid 19. But this isn’t the bottom line here. People are panicking because they are afraid of death. And why, really, are they afraid of death? Because they are caca-scared of the monster post-mortem you Romanist parasites have had them worship, and through this your kiddie-fiddling selves.
Take your fearmongering, false, Romanist religion priest, and press it right down to Hell, where it belongs, since it has no home in Heaven.

Well, actually Ireland as a whole would be better off without the dominating influence of a Church that has presided over such sinfulness. It’s not the core message, the Gospel, that is the problem. It is the institutional Church, it’s bishops and priests, and those who have for centuries established themselves as power brokers and special interest groups at the expense of the majority, and usually by means of such control mechanisms as sin and guilt. While I do not particularly relish MC’s intemperate and offensive language, he is right about there needing to be a radical change, and it needs to begin with the institutional Church and its apparatchiks, the priests and bishops.

Latest from + Vin:

https://rcdow.org.uk/cardinal/news/we-must-have-special-concern-for-the-elderly-says-cardinal-in-latest-coronavirus-message/

Some observations:

1. …”the right measures are to be introduced at the right time…” In other words, he’s going with the official Government / Boris advice to keep on buggering on regardless. While the rest of the world for the most part is taking definitive, tough, measures to prevent the spread of coronavirus. Such as cancelling all Masses, except those that are streamed. So, why does + Vin and our other bishops not grasp the nettle and do what the rest of the world is doing, rather than listening to and following the self-serving, politicised, advice of the Boris Government ? Churches will be closed eventually. So, + Vin, why not lead the way, early, and with immediate effect ? You know it makes sense, no matter what Bozza is saying.

2. Receiving Holy Communion on the tongue: ”…if there are those who still wish to insist on this right….” to receive HC on the tongue. Almost two thirds of his statement deal with the issue of how to administer HC, and particularly about the loony right wing traditionalist element that insists as a right to receive it on the tongue, regardless of the current health risks. He explains all kinds of positions / accommodations with regard to them, – asking them nicely, providing for individual administration after Mass, imploring them to make spiritual communion. WTF ? Who does these people think they are, that they, and nobody else, is right, and insisting on a right that puts other people in jeopardy, and that even when the Church gives advice. Why does + Vin / pander to these selfish nitwits ?

3. ” ….the elderly are our treasure who enrich our lives and our wisdom. We must do all we can always to nurture and protect them…” Absolutely. He’s got that right there. Well done. +Vin !

4. Addressing the priests and encouraging them to look after themselves, “…note of concern for you. Many of us are in the more vulnerable age group…” No shit. Statement of the obvious. The Catholic Church is staffed by those who for the most part in any other walk / way of life would already be in genteel retirement. I suppose his Westminster priests will chuckle to themselves at his new found concern for them, because for the most part (unless you are in his favoured group , + Vin treats his priests with cruel indifference.

5. It is clear that a. all public Masses should be suspended; b. Mass can be live-streamed; c. the selfish, arrogant right wing traditionalists should be told where to get off; d.Pope Frank and the Vatican seem to be more switched on that + Vin and taking the right action. + Vin is pandering to the Government, to the Traddies, and there will be a good reason for that, to do with money and power and influence.

First human trials of coronavirus vaccine could start within days in the US after it bypassed animal testing in accelerated process

‘The vaccine skipped animal testing stage and will be used on healthy volunteers
If the ‘genetic hack’ proves safe, it will be used on patients who have coronavirus
Massachusetts-based Moderna made candidate cure but using unusual methods
It comes as scientists in the UK said vaccine could be tested on humans by June.’

By James Gant For Mailonline

Published: 09:57, 14 March 2020 | Updated: 10:03, 14 March 2020

‘The first human trials of a coronavirus vaccine are to be launched within days, scientists in the US have said.
The ‘genetic hack’ was accelerated past the animal testing stage and will be used on healthy volunteers, then patients if it deemed safe. It comes as scientists in Britain said a vaccine could be tested on humans by June after encouraging results on mice.Massachusetts-based Moderna created the candidate cure but have taken a different route to traditional techniques. Normally a weaker bug is planted in the body so a patient can adapt to fight off the infection.
But the new method sees messenger RNA stimulates the immune system to make similar proteins to the killer virus, which it can then combat. The vaccine prototype is being funded by the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations, with the foundation’s Dr Melanie Saville telling the Telegraph: ‘Contain and delay is the approach taken in the UK and a number of different countries. ‘The approaches are really to buy time in the context of the stretch it puts on the healthcare system – it also buys time for vaccines to be developed.
‘We don’t know how the pandemic will evolve, whether, for example, it comes in various different waves.’
The coronavirus, which causes a disease called COVID-19 – and has killed nearly 5,000 people globally – cannot currently be cured or prevented. American researches spearheading the fight against the deadly bug admit hopes of millions of vaccines within a year are ‘aspirational’. And in a further blow for Britain, any cure would not be able to halt the anticipated peak in cases in May. But UK researchers, led by Mucosal Infection and Immunity head Dr Robin Shattock, said they have successfully trialled a vaccine in mice and are hopeful it could be ready for human trials by June. Senior researcher Dr Paul McKay, of Imperial College London, told the Express: ‘I’ve got results from a month after I injected (the mice) and the vaccine works really, really well.’ The team is working with scientists in Paris to determine the vaccine’s effectiveness in monkeys. Dr McKay said they have applied for further funding from the Medical Research Council to conduct human clinical trials. ‘If we get the funding for the human clinical trials, we will put it into people by June,’ he said. ‘If British scientists here develop a vaccine it would be great if the Government supported it.’ Should the human trials be successful, the team is hopeful the vaccine will be available for patients in a year. People who catch the illness have to be isolated and wait for their body to fight it off, with medical help if they need it for symptoms or more serious infection. A working vaccine could stop the bug in its tracks and some experts think it could become a recurring fixture in human society in the same way colds and flu are.
Some scientists and medical experts are concerned rushing a vaccine could end up worsening the infection in some patients rather than preventing it.
Studies have suggested that coronavirus vaccines carry the risk of what is known as vaccine enhancement, where instead of protecting against infection, the vaccine can actually make the disease worse when a vaccinated person is infected with the virus. The mechanism that causes the risk is not fully understood and is one of the stumbling blocks that has prevented the successful development of a coronavirus vaccine. Normally, researchers would take months to test for the possibility of vaccine enhancement in animals. Given the urgency to stem the spread of the new coronavirus, some drugmakers are moving straight into small-scale human tests, without waiting for the completion of such animal tests.
There remains no vaccine for any of the new coronaviruses that have caused outbreaks in the past 20 years.’

Maybe self-sacrificing priests could offer themselves as human guinea pigs in the testing stage in order to do a service for humanity ? After all, they don’t have wives and children, and they are supposed to be in the business of being Christlike, and a main characteristic of that is self-sacrifice. I think they could redeem themselves of the sinful abusive behaviour of their brother priests by such an altruistic gift. Just saying…..

You all would be surprised, very pleasantly so, were you to meet me in person. I am kindness, thoughtfulness, and consideration almost perfectly personified.
My appearance, bespectacled and youthful-looking and fairhaired, belies any of the more hysterical character sketches of me by the more irrational posters to the blog.
But please, if ever you do meet me, don’t ever ask me to praise the institutional Romanist Church, and her ‘good’ sponging, priest-pimps.
And yes, to that other poster. My dad knows precisely how I feel about Romanist parasites. He neither likes nor understands my hatred of this sub-species, but then, he doesn’t know about them what I know. And what I will never tell him.

“All pubs and bars asked to close until at least March 29 and public urged not to have or attend house parties.”

How will this affect seminarians and staff at Gaynooth, Bp Pat? Will they not have to close all the “gents” as well.

Closing the “gents” would be… well, let’s just say, the final straw for them, Bp Pat. They’d go on the rampage.

7.34: The closing of pubs and night clubs will obviously affect a plonker like you. What a stupid concern? Maybe you might supply your body for rent!!

If only that were true. (Sigh 😩)
I’d have every Romanist priest-pimp on a permanent diet of bread, water, along with the vitamin and mineral supplements necessary to keep their foul bodies and souls together.
(See? I AM merciful after all. Even to such people as these. 😇)

I want to correct a few, very serious misconceptions about me over my hatred of Romanist priesthood.
If ever I came across a Romanist priest who was injured, I should do all in my power to help him…as a human being, not as a Romanist priest-pimp.
If ever I came across a Romanist priest who was starving, I should give him my last meal…as a human being, not as a Romanist priest-pimp.
If ever I came across any of these men in distress of whatever hue, I should never hesitate to do what I could for them. But as human beings, not as Romanist priest-pimps.
Make of this what you will. I don’t doubt that ill-will here towards me will make of it what it maliciously chooses.

The level of delusion at 9.55 is enormous.
Not to be able to see the fundamental contradiction inherent in this diatribe is stunning blindness and indicative of an abysmal level of self-reflection. It becomes a little clearer now why you were expelled from the seminary.
