TOM DEENIHAN SELLING OFF BISHOPS PALACE LAND IN MULLINGAR.

PALACE LANDS

Dear Bishop Tom,

Recently, I visited the church of my baptism in Tullamore. It was good to be back in my home turf. I am, of course, aware that Tullamore is canonically within the Diocese of Meath. And, I am further aware that some of your priests (but not all) are very happy to extend a cordial welcome to the Ordinary of Larne when I visit the area entrusted to your pastoral governance.

By virtue of my baptism, I am intrinsically and ontologically connected to the Diocese of Meath, so I was very concerned to read that you are selling some the diocese estate. Like many Irish bishops I appreciate that you are facing tough decisions in order to balance the books. However, I do wonder are you making the right choice?

Is the selling of the land the worst form of short-termism? Would you, my brother Bishop Tom, be better to adopt a wait-and-see approach? After all, the finances of the diocese might experience an upturn, although, I accept that is unlikely! However, do you not think adopting a wait-and-see approach might be more prudent approach? Are you being advised by people that have the best interests of the diocese at heart?

In order to be helpful, I am going to make a suggestion that I respectfully suggest you should carefully consider.

You could render a Decree ordering the monks of Silverstream Priory to celebrate the Divine Office in English, i.e., prohibiting the use of Latin in all liturgical services. You should further insist that the Eucharist is celebrated utilising the New Rite of the Mass, i.e., the missal of Paul VI. Such a Decree would be giving effect to the wishes of His Holiness Pope Francis.

LATEST COMMUNITY PICTURE

Of course, that would create anarchy within Silverstream Priory. And, if they did not comply in obedience to your Decree, you could petition the Holy See for a Decree of suppression. How about that for an idea?

Once Silverstream had been suppressed then the legal title to the property and the lands that constitute Silverstream Priory would pass to the Diocese of Meath. It is prime land that is ripe for development. In fact, the sale of the land could make the diocese a handsome profit.

This would have a twofold advantage: a) it would remove a major headache that you inherited from your predecessor, Bishop Michael Smith; and, b) I am sure you would take great delight in removing what has been a rich seam of content for my blog.

Of course, if that did become a reality, I am sure you would have no problem in utilising the profits from the sale of the lands at Silverstream to assist with the building of five houses for the poor.

With prayerful best wishes,

Your brother bishop,

Pat

Honestly, Pat, that isn’t a sensible plan at all. Once sold the land at Silverstream has gone forever. Whereas if the monks set up an onlyfans that will be a source of income for decades!

Esker is closing and it’s beginning to look like the end for the Dublin province of Redemptorists. Dan Barnum’s circus was a close match to Charles Brown tenure as high priest. Ciaran O’Callaghan is flirting with the rite side (for once) and interesting days like ahead as to which of pink reds receives the provincial prize to close the shop.

Esker of course being the current home of Tony Flannery. How come Tony’s message and high profile still failed to attract new would-be Redemptorists?

The Palace in Mullingar is beside the Cathedral in the town centre and is now the priests’ house and has been for decades. A new house was built out the Dublin Road (1970s?) which housed Bishop Smith until recently enough. Apparently he now lives in a new house possibly on land adjacent (someone might be able to clarify). When the new bishop arrived a new house was bought in another area of Mullingar, Ardmore Hills I believe (someone might be able to clarify) and the (1970s) house was turned into offices. It is land adjacent to the (1970s) house which is being put up for sale. Why did the new bishop need a new house might be a better question than why there is a need to sell the land

His Lordship Bishop Tom Deenihan DD resides in Bishop’s House Dublin Road Mullingar
Bishop Emeritus Michael Smith resides at St’ Oliver’s Beechfield Dublin Road Mullingar.

It is not the lack of finance that properties and land is being sold it is surplus to diocesan mission needs ever pre covid so every dioceses is selling surplas property and land.
The church has many investment and in no need for a “fire” sale.

When Bishop Pat vacates the curates house ( the Oratory) that he resides in Bishop Michael will most likely sell it as it is surplus to Down and Connor missional plans.

@11:37 Bishop’s House, Dublin Road Mullingar is now Bishop’s Offices, Dublin Road, Mullingar. Perhaps someone from Mullingar or a priest of the diocese can confirm

@1.29 Any Irish bishop who doesn’t have an earned doctorate is given an honorary DD by the Pontifical University, Maynooth. Hence, Dr Joe Duffy, Dr Eamon Casey etc.

Like

Your assumptions are not correct. Honorary doctorates are awarded at pontifical graduation ceremonies as at other institutions.
Your reasoning is faulty. Bishops were automatically referred to as doctor from the time when only those with doctorates were appointed. Alas, that is no longer the case.

T. Deenihan is not DD. He’s PhD in education from Hull. He left Maynooth without the BD, indeed without a degree.
Calling a bishop who hasn’t earned it, DD is the height of clericalism.

Latin in the Divine Office is not a problem. The issue is the unreformed breviary. Pope Francis has said unequivocally the liturgy of the Second Ecumenical and General Council of the Vatican is the magisterium of the church.

All very well reforming the breviary when the reforms after VII mean that there are hardly any monks, nuns or priests to say it.

Like

Actually the breviary before the council was that reformed by – you got it – Pius X, in which the ancient order of psalms was thrown out. The hymns were mangled versions of ancient hymns forced into classical meter (in the Roman breviary).
12:37 Personally I would love y’all to go back to that ancient psalter and see where it gets you. IF any of you can manage the Latin, and I don’t believe you mostly could. If you understand that monks and nuns don’t say the breviary you might understand why you’re wrong. 😁

Not correct. It was expected every successful candidate had a doctorate, hence the practice of calling them doctor.
Can you cite one instance where a bishop was “given” an honorary DD from Maynooth?
Can you identify a process, i.e. paper trail, whereby such an alleged conferring took place?
Can you find a single written reference to “D.D. (honoris causa)” relating to such an alleged event?
It’s clericalism of the first degree to call someone who hasn’t adoctorate, doctor.

Given to him from Rome?
Really? I don’t think so.
From which institution?
It would be invidious indeed for “Rome” to do that for Irish bishops and not for their UK counterparts.
You attribute stupidity to “Rome” which it doesn’t practise.

@1.17
Why are people on this blog so bombastic, even when they are wrong? The Pontifical University at Maynooth only started to confer honorary degrees publicly in the 1980s (1987 or 1988), when the first recipients were lay US doners (two of the lay student accommodation blocks are named after the first two honorary doctors). I was at the ceremony, as was Bill Mulvihill, who will confirm this.
Bishops, when appointed, received an honorary doctorate, without ceremony, from the PU. Even before Vatican II many bishops lacked earned doctorates, so relied on the honorary PU one. Doctor of course is also used in the wider sense of teacher, which is one of the tasks of a bishop.

It’s because of the key dynamic of Roman Catholicism which is actually about power and control, which in argument manifests as having to be right and hatred for their bugbears. The fracturing of papal authority and the faithful’s attitude to it (which was already well under way in the nineteenth century and the fact they blame Vatican 2 just shows they don’t know their own history) means they have wound up arguing with each other.
This can only be good for humanity.

Have any clergy in any Diocese in Ireland housed any current Irish homeless or Ukrainian war refugees. None have been housed in our area but there are several unoccupied houses and other church buildings unused for several years now. Looks like Deenihan and other Bishops cashing in on high property prices right now. Where do their retired clericals live?

Like

I don’t, 12:48! I still wear slip briefs like a seminary formator and you can pop up to my room to see them any time you like. 🥰

Like

Nonetheless the responses are very instructive.
How many clergy have given accommodation to the homeless or refugees is a straightforward question and one which should have a simple answer, not screams that they’re being persecuted.
If any clergy had done this they would certainly be wanting it all over the media and would certainly simply say so. 🤷

Like

1.10: Do you recall the words of Jesus, “when you give alms, are sacrificing and are charitable, do not have it trumpeted before you…Your heavenly Father sees your kindness…” That’s what matters. Why would any priest want media attention or to announce from the rooftops who he may be housing, refugee, homeless or Ukrainian? It’s against the privacy and dignity of the individuals to put their names in the public domain when you are offering accommodation. Aren’t we to RESPECT these VULNERABLE PEOPLE in our midst? I know three priests who are accommodating families. All we need to know is there are many kind and caring individuals and families expressing their wonderful care and Christianity. But, I wonder why there’s a very slow response given to the many who have offered their help?

12.05: It’s unfair to criticise clergy only re: housing of refugees and homeless people. FYI, many religious orders have given buildings for Ukranians and some of the leading religious are to the forefront of working with, advocating for and providing solid, long term accomodation for those most in need: Fr. McVerry: Sr. Stan, Br. Kevin, Sisters of Mercy, Presentation Sisters, Presentation Brothers, De La Salle, Holy Faith Sisters….Some clergy have done likewise. But, the reality now is that many people and families who offered accomodation to Ukranians have changed their minds and many have yet to receive Ukranians. There are all kinds of insurance, safeguarding, legal and financial issues involved. Two homeless men call frequently to me for assistance. I’ve offered to pay their fee for staying in hostels or other accomodation but they won’t accept my support exvept what i give them at my door. They prefer to be “wanderers” and sleep out. Solving the HOMELESS problem is possible but it requires a dedicated commitment from government and all of us. I know of many religious Sisters, now retired who go twice weekly to Br. Kevin’s centre from 6am – 6pm to help and assist with the great work being carried out. Lets give credit whete it’s due, please.

10.43: I don’t accept your cynical take. The experience and knowledge I have of the groups and religious orders I mentioned is that they have long term objectives. Apart from providing acvomodation in their premises, these groups also provide psychological support, educational opportunities, well being programmes, finance management programmes, family supports and leadership/management training. Responding to homeless people must be a multifaceted approach which many of the groups I referred to are engaging with. Perhaps there’s an urgent need to consolidate the many different groups and agencies who work with vulnerable young people and all who are excluded from maunstream society, especially parents and children trapped in cycles of poverty. We must all play our part.

@9.16 what about all the unoccupied houses & properties in individual parishes around Ireland – it’s unfair of selfish Bishops and parish priests with 2 or 3 houses at their disposal to live in to leave all the housing burden to Peter McVerry & his good colleagues.

The SJs and the Mercy nuns are great ones for living in council houses, in a performative way, even though they don’t need such housing and prevent those truly in need getting the accommodation they needlessly occupy. There’s an SJ who lives in the Mullacreevie Park estate in Armagh city. There’s a long waiting list to live there, but the Jesuit has a housing executive flat in it, even though the order could well afford to buy a property or rent privately. It’s not as if he even interacts with the people on the estate.

10.53 It is no “burden” to Mc Verry I assure you. No burden at all. The homeless of the city know wheter they fit his demographic or not, and he had in his time very defined demographics. Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil abandoned the unborn babies in the womb. Sinn Féin Dáil Éireann wait to see which way the wind is blowing, before they pin their colours to a mast. The moment wretched open door migration of the congenitally lazy from West Africa and God knows where, is the moment the housing crisis ceases. Stopping REITs gobbling up the only available land would be rather helpful. The restoration of the old Council housing construction campaigns of maybe 30,000 a year (barely 10,000 last year), elimination of useless ‘glasraí’ levies would accommodate the working class and the money saved from not having to house those welfare tourists called ‘asylum seekers’ in ‘direction provision’ can be devoted to service to allow the homeless to be both treated for mental health issues and housed decently.
If provisional Sinn Fein managed to fool enough of the ill educated to gain government as the main coalition party, it would simply mean accelerated migration and nothing more than a campaign to destroy Irish landlords and property and ensure than the private rental sector is own by Germans, Americans and the Duke of Westminster.

That victim was an exceptional gentleman and because of his naive rosy view of the would ( and rich family background) was putty to the ways of ML. But he was facilitated by Church and State although he had failed three sets of exams in succession in NUI, I do not know whether he matriculated in the first place but I suspect he didn’t and ML would have arranged his place in NUI. +Pat you have highlighted the corrupted visitation, and the near destruction of Fr Andersen’s priesthood for whistleblowing on Dom Kirby, but destroying Silverstream will do no one good. It is frankly ill-willed, I must say. The wishes of Pope Francis are a short term concern at this point. The ‘spirit of V2’ delusion he seems to follow has destroyed Catholicism in Europe and LatAm (now minority Catholic).
Only in the little mind of Arthur the ignorant, near bankrupter of Leeds, eulogiser of Jimmy Saville, is the Mass and Office in Latin against V2 in general and SC in particular. Probably Arthur doesn’t think so for during Benedict’s time he was all Hermeneutic of Continuity, and Pope Francis saw a parrot who says whatever he is bid. Latin New Order and LOTH is a typical enough congregational solution. If Silverstream was to be properly incorporated into one of the Benedictine confederations, that might be a solution, like Solesmes (which does a very fine chant edition of the NOM) and another Benedictine house (whose name escapes me) which follows the ‘transitional’ Missal of 1964 or 1966 which is the actual Mass of V2, or like Barroux, a standard 1960/2 Mass. Fr Andersen should be made Abbot and the current not ordained pro-Abbot might possibly do with some help for his internet habits. Silverstream is one of the few religious houses in this country not a haunt of older men who would normally be old to follow the normal rigours of monastic live whether Office or work.
In most dioceses, finances can be fragile, churches can need a deal of work, many priests are aged and in fragile health, but almost always giving useless diocesan flunkies a new career opportunity on someone else’s payroll and useless schemes being abandoned, can resolve financial issues. Probably +Pat is jesting, but the destruction of Silverstream and selling off of the land would be short-sighted, and a fine old house would be lost and the site become a blight and another instance of urban sprawl, merely feeding a contrived housing crisis (a result of uncontrolled migration and unrealistic household expectations among poorer people).

Of course he’s not a ‘team player’ He has courage and conviction and as someone who knows plenty of bishops, past and present, and lots of priests my personal opinion is that he has more integrity and honesty than many of them.
Right from the day he stood in front of Daly he showed he had something most of the others who sat in the pews in choir dress hadn’t Balls!
